A letter has just arrived in the post from a company called Bluecrest screening offering me a complete medical check up 'For the all inclusive price of £129.'. Question is why pay £129 when I can go to my GP and get it done for free? I received another letter from my credit card company asking for my mobile number, the latest of many each a bit more insistant than the last. This is despite my telling them that I do not have a mobile, though they do say that other arrangements will be made for those who like me do not have mobiles. The reason they say they require a mobile number is to confirm on-line transactions. Not just online transactions. Last week in Berlin I received text messages with confirmation requests every bloody time I tried to use one card. Annoying, but I can see the reasoning behind it. Card companies now have to meet this new PSD2 standard of protection. 10 1 3
RMweb Gold Popular Post roundhouse Posted September 5, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted September 5, 2019 A p*ss up in a brewery is something that GTR would not be trusted with. Hate them with a passion (far worse then estate agents type of thing) now and my other half is now on a bus from Purley as no trains heading south via Redhill due to either: 1- signal failure 2 - points failure 3- trespassers They are the online / train announcement being given to her. I know that today it's unlikely to be their fault but many often are such as Mondays shortage of crew maent that her train avoided Redhill despite it running on time. I bought her a half of Lewes Castle Brown but its getting warm so I may have to drink it and get her another when she eventually makes it. Another claim this week for Delay Repay though its a pittance for the hassles she gets virtually every day. Aa good say for me as me and brother dismantled one of mum's sheds that was leaning precariously. Today was the first time we had the door open since. Mum moved in over a year ago. Had to rip the door off! Earthquake! 4

RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted September 5, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 5, 2019 Afternoon all. P!ss ups and Brewery..well two doctors had multiple goes at inserting a canulla and taking blood. I now have arms like pin cushions. Told off for falling asleep during the scan..again! Thank goodness I could get to Costa Coffee in the Jubliee Wing before I ran out of sugar ! Tummy was making growling noises from lack of food and drink. Lots of very poorly people in the LGI especially people smoking in the designated smoking area. Visited the "old " part of the LGI. Some fantastic pictures, plaques and buildings. Missed a bus home as the driver didn't bother to stop..thinks..if he couldn't see my arm waving at the stop should he be driving a bus? Tea eaten, decaff tea drunk. RMweb Gold Popular Post Tony_S Posted September 5, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted September 5, 2019 Evening all. Lovely sunny weather as we depart Newfoundland. However the wind speed may exceed that allowed to leave harbour so we may have t8 return before eventually departing to Sept Iles. Captain can't make up time as there is a marine conservation area speed limit. Tony 19
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted September 5, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 5, 2019 Evening all from Estuary-Land. The credit card that the company needs my mobile number for I use very rarely and only for Paypal transactions. I am considering doing away with it altogether. My credit card usage is minimal anyway, I don't bother remembering the the pin numbers which means I use credit cards hardly at all. Now time to put the kettle on, be back later.
RMweb Gold Tony_S Posted September 5, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 5, 2019 One of the excursions tomorrow is "explore archipelago by Zodiac". I wonder if that will go ahead. We will be ashore looking at some exhibition about what happened when First Nations people met the French. Tony

I am considering doing away with it altogether. My credit card usage is minimal anyway, I don't bother remembering the the pin numbers which means I use credit cards hardly at all. It has been the stated wish of several Chancellors of The Exchequer that this nation moves away from any form of cash transaction and banks even charge their business customers to take the proceeds of their commerce. Looking at the impact of the Indian government’s withdrawal of large denomination banknotes and its impact on savings shows clearly that the small saver is someone to be screwed. Many years of seeing how governments attempt to sneak in their nefarious schemes - of which their cashless society is yet another - mean I am extremely wary but I also recognise the need to keep both debit and credit cards active. The consumer does have some small improvements in redress against failure when goods or services have been purchased using a credit card too. I still prefer to pay for small purchases (a pint in the pub, half a dozen eggs, a bottle of milk etc.) and leave gratuities in cash. 5
laurenceb
Many years ago my boss organised a trip round Marstons in Burton for the local agricultural discussion group, on the way back he was complaining about the number who hadnt bothered to come. RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted September 5, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 5, 2019 (edited) Good evening everyone Not much has been done in the cellar this morning, this was partly due to my trip out this morning to pick up the second hand shelving I bought and also to being stuck in traffic on the M62. So what should have been a trip lasting about 2 hours, ended up lasting over 3 1/2 hours! Anyway the shelving is now safely stored away in the cellar awaiting painting. After dinner I refitted the weather strip on the front door and cut to length a draft excluder for the inside cellar door. After tea and a short rest, I went to Salford Quays for a swim, the water had cooled a little from Monday and is now just under 18C, so I once again wore my wetsuit. Tonight I managed a mile in another personal best of 33 minutes. I can only assume that the added buoyancy from the wetsuit is assisting in some way. Or is it the fact that the wetsuit is making me more streamlined, by holding in all the flabby bits? I’ll leave it for all you good folk to decide the answer to that one! Once home I poured myself a bottle of Doombar. Goodnight all Edited September 5, 2019 by BSW01 19

Was that formerly the Hamble School of Navigation? Basically yes - the old Warash organisation although I believe some bits such as fire fighting still remain on the old site but apart from a couple of listed buildings there the rest of the site is going under housing developments. I have incidentally posted the pics plus a few more elsewhere on Wheeltappers (the 'Those Interested In Ships' thread) which just about tops out my achievements today. Looking forward to seeing Baz, and anyone else who might be there, at Steam on Saturday - must be an early start I think in order to get in the flippin' car park. Interested to see that even Tony's big ship can suffer the vicissitudes of the weather but that apart it must be an interesting area and piece of coastline to see. Tomorrow Mrs Stationmaster is off for some blood tests but I don't know if I'll be needed to hold her hand for that and I'm certainly not accompanying her on her other errands. I suspect my role will be collecting her from outside Waitrose once she has done some shopping. RMweb Gold Popular Post Tony_S Posted September 5, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted September 5, 2019 I can confirm that we did leave Corner Brook without incident. I don’t think 50 knot winds out at sea affect this ship but the wind speed limit may have been a port requirement. We should be in Quebec before Dorian gets here. We are just entering the Guif of St Lawrence. We have just put the clocks back one and a half hours ( from Newfoundland time to Eastern Standard (Quebec)) so seem to be looking forward to extra sleep. RMweb Premium Popular Post BR60103 Posted September 6, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 6, 2019 (edited) Tony: The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation used to program national programs, but I think a lot went out from Halifax. Programs would be promised for "6 o'clock, 6:30 in Newfoundland." 6:30 in Newfoundland became a standard tag line. We used to have to call our credit card company to tell them we would be taking a trip. They've discontinued this requirement for some reason. I find that paying by card in coffee shops I tend to forget to tip. Restaurants have a reminder line. This was my medic day. SWMBO has been complaining about my chronic cough, so we saw the Dr. I seem to have pneuminia in one lung (if I heard it right). Antibiotic pills, probiotic yoghurt, puffers and an X-ray.
