We don't have A/C and last night Shona our Scottie seemed to be having a bit of a panic attack because of the heat. She finally calmed down when we draped a wet towel over her back.

Good evening everyone 

 

Well it’s been a scorcher here in the northwest of England. I spent most of the morning in the garden, after giving the patio another clean in the area that needed it I did some dead heading of the roses and clipping of the hedge. Once that was done I decided to clip the trees that are planted in the school field but grow through the fence, as I’m always getting scratched by them. This task only took me 30 minutes but it’s made a heck of a difference and I now have a clear passage to the gate at the end of the alleyway. After dinner  tidied up my tools and then knocked off for the day. Once I’d got changed and had a good wash I sat down and designed an garden feature that I had mentioned to Sheila and she seemed to like the idea off. This is basically a small wall with an old cast iron fireplace fixed to it, which will be located next to the fence at one end of the patio. We already have an old fireplace and I’ve got plenty of old bricks stored in the large cellar room, so that’ll be more stuff cleared out, a win win situation.

 

Ava, Evie and Max came round for tea tonight, it was Max’s turn to choose and he decided that he wanted pizza, I didn’t mind that as it a really quick and easy tea to do. As expected, the cheesecake went down very well, however, they all ate rather a lot of pizza and so it didn’t all go, but that now means that there is enough for Friday night when James and Amelia come round for tea, below is a photo of said cheesecake.

My Australian friend told me his dad would hose-down the roof of their house when it got too hot. Despite the lack of A/C in our house I've never felt the need to go that far. If it gets really bad we can always plug in the caravan and take refuge there. The problem with that is the A/C unit makes such a racket it's hard to sleep.

 

A lot of people, clearly concerned for my welfare, have suggested I could also jump in the lake.

On the weather last night I watched the animated radar returns from last night's storms in central Oregon and Washington cover the Idaho panhandle. Lightning started some wildfires.

Very pleasant today in the Willamette Valley. I turned the AC off before bed last night. The western valleys will be back in the 30°Cs for Thursday and Friday. I will probably have the AC back on by the time I return home from work tomorrow.

 

A combo fire/carbon monoxide detector in the hall decided to alarm right when I turned off the TV and was about to drift off to sleep on Monday night. It wasn't the irritating chirping of the low battery detector but a full-throated, though momentary, alarm. That's the kind of adrenaline boost you don't want as you are closing your eyes. It gets you out of bed in a hurry. The house had been closed up with the AC on. I have no idea what triggered the alarm but it was temporary.

 

I have multiple detectors on the upper level, one in each room and the hall, so five of them in all. I took the opportunity to replace the batteries, just in case, and hit the test button and they all started alarming and talking to each other: "fire", "carbon monoxide". It took me a little while longer than I had earlier expected to get to sleep.

We went to the Cherry Hut today for Dayle's birthday; a day late but Wednesday   Is when they have the cherry pork that she likes.  Her cousin was with us. She fell last winter--broke a wrist and damaged a knee. We worried about the knee's swelling since we came. Today she saw a doctor and had 80 cc of liquid drained from it.  Her daughter came over later and we tried to explain Brexit and parliamentry government to her.  (We are in Michigan.)

Good morning one and all, with continuing warm thoughts to Sandy and John

 

Desperate situations call for desperate remedies.  A kind friend who used to work at a builders’ merchants got an electric fan for me some years ago now.  This is the time of year, and these the conditions, when it really comes into its own.  It lives in my bedroom and was on all night last night and the night before, with beneficial effects on my sleep.  It was this time last year when I dripped for most of the day.  I don’t mind heat but it’s the humidity that gets me.  Think Superman and Kryptonite.  I don’t envy those commuting into central London in these conditions.  No doubt many workplaces are fully air-conditioned but you have to get there first and a crowded tube train is surely the weakest link.

 

I’ve been learning how to answer my mobile phone.  It is one of those things that everyone assumes you know and no-one tells you unless you ask.  The other day I asked, in the phone shop, and felt such a fool.  I even searched the interweb for a video tutorial.  My simple brain thinks that when you see a round logo with a green handset on it you press it.  Apparently not.  The young lady in the shop made swiping it to the left, the correct procedure, look so easy.  When you know what you’re doing it is, and I didn’t.  Despite repeated practising I have not yet mastered it and the irritating ring tone – what other kinds are there? – peals for what seems an age until I get the swipe just right.  A bonus was that the assistant fixed the BT mail app – a technical term, I’m told – on my mobile, which is more than one of her colleagues had managed to do a few days earlier.  Now, of course, the phone beeps all day to herald the arrival of yet more piffle.  Was my decision six months ago to move away from the landline towards the mobile really such a good idea?

 

Today I am cooking pan fried salmon for me and Poorly Pal.  Using a very hot wok in current temperatures may not be the wisest idea but when procuring ingredients one does have to plan ahead.  Either side of that some m*d*ll*ng should take place but I must take a towel with me for there isn’t one in the shed where the layout lives.  In a week’s time I will be on my way to Sidmouth for the festival that runs on infinite improbability drive.  Forgive my impatience for sea breezes.

Not too bad a nights sleep despite it being 26.5 C in the bedroom with all the windows open.

 When I did go downstairs Ben the Border Collie was lying at the bottom panting in the heat..

 

Last night when a walked back to the house , you could feel the heat coming off the walls 10ft away...

 

I've just written a cheque for sailing club meals, 3 times during the regatta we have an evening meal , nothing posh, fish and chips one night, Chiili another etc. It used to be you ordered the day before at the T bar but they gone all officious this year. I'll drop the cheque off on the way home, The person lumbered with organising lives only just off route..

 

The technologically incompetant Neighbour came round, her router and phones weren't working after yesterdays lightening and some Cockwomble from Plusnet was telling her to take a screwdriver to the phone socket..

As it is the filter, is an external one anyway..

 

Checking it out her phone has died , it says turn on Base station, which lights up when turned on but doesn't do anything. and her router has the lights on searching for internet, but never finds it.. 

But another phone in the socket shows the socket works..

 

It's 22.625C in here this moring, which is lower than when I arrived yesterday, this means the AC men may have had a look at it.

So I've a 100M ohm resistor settling at the moment, when that is done I've a 20 G Ohm resistor to do, followed by some current shunts..

 

Ah the standard deviation has dropped to less than 0.1

 

Time... to take the first set of results..

I am waiting to mow the lawn.

 

I could have got going when I got up at just after 0600, but felt my neighbours would appreciate the peace and quiet.

 

However, once the contractors, who are laying in an access road opposite the hoppodrime [sic] start up with their Bomag rollers, dumper trucks and the like, my mower's racket will be unheard.

 

I may also indulge in a little trench work before the temperatures rise to that at which a retreat into the muddy hollow is required.

Good morning all,

Very warm already after a hot uncomfortable night even with the fan running. Today we are told records may be broken.

Like everybody else I am too hot. I don't mind temperatures up to about  25C but after that I don't like it and become irritable. Very irritable. Today may well see me go off the scale of irritability.

Just to get me warmed  up we're off to Sainsbury's shortly. I may climb into one of their big fridges.

Granddaughter Abbie has been on holiday in Crete for a week with 11 friends. Their late evening flight was delayed so they probably wouldn't have got home until about 3.00am. Glad I hadn't volunteered to assist with collecting some of them from the airport! Mind you it would have been cooler in the car with A/C.

Another muggatea required before getting into shopping mode.

A horrible non-sleep night last night. Not because of the heat, just one of those nights when sleep wouldn't come - brain too active mulling over a thousand and one things I suppose. Horace the cat and I spent most of the time in a spare room so as not to disturb SWMBO who was peacefully asleep.

 

Today is forecast to reach 30-odd degrees with high humidity, which will make it ideal for preparing the house for the attack of the horde arrival of the grandchildren tomorrow. At least by then the temperature may well be less uncomfortable.

Morning all from a rather warm Charente.   Yesterday it was in the high 30's. I managed to get the part for the broken outside rap and installed it. However it now appears that there is a leak at the next stop tap down the line. More investigations down the hole are needed.  Not a lot else got done apart from more checking of the pool interior.  A late meal was had then we sat out with a glass of the local fermented and distilled grape juice.  Very pleasant it was. Just one problem. Beth likes it as well so the bottle goes down rapidly.  We are off to the source for more supp,ies on Monday.

 

Beth has just set off for a morning's shopping with a friend.  I'm off to pick up a repaired strimmer.  Not a lot to report apart from that it's another warm day.

 

Thoughts with John and Sandy.  Tony, hope that thing go well with Aditi.

Morning from a sunny Surrey.

 

Forecast here is for 34 degrees but may well be hotter than when we were in Salt lake City but with the higher humidity and lack of air con. I could go and sit in the car with the air con though.

 

I fitted the door bell camera unit and its all working fine so when I get any parcels I can talk to them if I am in the shed rather than miss the delivery.

 

At present sitting in a cool shed with doors and windows open. it doesn't get that hot in here till late afternoon due to the amount of insulation in roof and walls plus being in the shad of the fir trees etc.

Currently working on my other halfs loco that she purchased in Salt lake City, fitting Kadees in place of the factory fitted plastic couplers. Also 34100 Appledore is having details added before weathering commences.

Good morning everyone 

 

Another beautiful sunny day here in England’s northwest. Like Monday there is no Zumba class as the class teacher is on holiday, but Sheila is once again off out to meet up with her Zumba buddies for a coffee. I will probably spend most of the day in the garden as there is always something I can find to do out side. Unfortunately I’m one of those people who burn very easily in the sun so I’ll be wearing a long sleeved shirt, full length trousers and have a hat on. I’ll also drink plenty of water too, most likely somewhere in the region of 3-4 litres today. The plan for the evening is to go to Salford Quays for another swim, if it’s anything like Monday, I’ll really enjoy it.

NE Herts is no different to other parts of England, hot, hotter and hottest. At least it is too hot to mow here without the risk of the cut grass subsequently scorching. Daughter and SIL taking their brood off to Turkey early tomorrow, they enjoyed it last year (during our heatwave) and didn’t want to risk a bad summer here. Guess who will be mowing their estate in addition to installing sacrificial anodes in their domestic water systems.

 

Nearest builder’s site radio (only operates with volume control in excess of 10/10ths) blasting out Luvvin Spoonful’s 60’s hit “Summer in the city”. I thought they only had planning permission for 78 Jerry-built, overpriced hutches, nobody mentioned a city.

 

Tomorrow KZ has to prepare former house for multiple potential buyer viewings on Saturday. This will involve more than 100 miles of round trip in air conditioning, even if the operation of various power and manual tools will be under the midday sun. I need to get back in time for our monthly farmers’ market as my meat farming lady has a few choice cuts for me. Today may be spent building up reserves for tomorrow’s expenditure. I shall now sign off paraphrasing GDB’s moniker of the day:
