RMweb Gold Popular Post Kingzance Posted July 10, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted July 10, 2019 Returned to NE Herts and we have "claggy heat", otherwise known as Betty Swallocks (if that isn't too much information). It certainly isn't as comfortable as it was on the Isle of Wight, even if we have no traffic noise to contend with here. Overall, the visitors were impressed by the island and agreed with me that, compared to arriving at an airport and then waiting at least two hours before being loaded into a narrow aluminium tube, the whole access to this island beats that hands down and with no issues of the impact of politicians and central bankers on the £ affecting the IoW, it is hard not to sing its praises. It even produces some reasonable wines, easy drinking beers and rather a tasty gin! Our return crossing was on the Victoria of Wight, the latest ship on the route which has a host of innovations to reduce its carbon footprint and allow the operators, WightLink, to claim it to be a hybrid ship. Sadly, no UK yard managed to meet the tender requirements so she was built in Turkey. Also last night, the Royal Navy's flagship crept back into Portsmouth Harbour under the cover of darkness. It hasn't broken down but is taking in worrying amounts of water. Could there be a hole somewhere and could it be related to the enforced removal of its previous Captain? I don't know but things seem fishy! Perhaps Ms Mourdant will get her fish-net stocking down there and get it sorted??? One of the Daring class destroyers has had to be moved to a mooring in a channel in the harbour to make room for QE so there will be a few unhappy matelots on that one! Anyway, back home and various plants have survived so some watering must have been done by family! Not too much mail needing sorting, SWMBO may bump me off now as the payout on my life has apparently increased to a level that would allow her far too much fiscal freedom! Mowing will need to be done tomorrow and the next day at our former abode - which may have found a buyer, so one lives in hope that not too many more g-word trips there will be required . SWMBO, encouraged by one of the visitors we hosted on the island, has decided we need new garden furniture. I know not why and I know not where it will be sited either. Her search may keep her out of my hair for a day or few but will certainly result in pain to my wallet. Sweet dreams readers, including 81C with his new interests. 15 1 1

This lamented officer had sailed round the world with the late Captain Vancouver, had commanded various men-of-war and was many years Commissioner at Madras, the climate of which place greatly contributed to the destruction of his health."

RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted July 10, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 10, 2019 Good evening everyone The weather has been dull all day and always looked like it would rain at any moment, but thankfully it held off until just after 10:30 this evening. Typically, only starting after I’d already watered the plants! Today a little more progress has been in the cellar. There are no risers to each of the stair treads and the front of each stair is slightly behind the back of the stair below it, so if a riser was fitted, it would end up in front of the step, or have to be set at an angle. So extensions have been fitted to the rear of each of the stair treads. This now means that when I fit a riser it will just be behind the front of the stair tread, looking a lot better aesthetically. I then made a start on the L shape shelf, the two main parts are cut to length and I’ve marked the top ready to cut a profile that matches the wall, as there were a couple of places where a large gap was evident. I’ll need to use a jigsaw to cut this and weather permitting, I’m hoping to do that tomorrow, I’ll then fix it in place ready for painting. Ian dropped Ava, Evie and Max round after school as they were stopping for tea, which tonight was chicken curry. So that made it a fairly quick tea, as all I had to do was get some curry sauce out of the freezer, which I did last night just before heading to bed and add it to some fried chicken pieces, simples. After tea, Ian picked up Max for his now regular boxing lesson and the girls stayed here and helped me water the plants. This has now become something of a regular thing that they like to do and they both seem to really enjoy it. However, before we started watering the plants, I brought in my wetsuit in off the line as it was dry by then and I had visions of it getting wet again once the girls started splashing water everywhere. Once they’d both gone home and we’d tidied up we sat down with a nice cold drink, Doombar in my case. Goodnight all
RMweb Premium Dave Hunt Posted July 10, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 10, 2019 Saw a very nice podiatrist lady who said that the nail of The Toe has to come off and she will organise an appointment for that to happen as soon as she can. She carved off a lot of the gungified rubbish (sorry about having to use the technical medical term) and said to keep on with the antiseptic dressings until such time as the minor op is concluded. I said that I have a mate who's got a new scalpel blade and is raring to go but she said that since he's from Yorkshire there could be a problem with cross- border protocols - sorry Baz but thanks for the offer. SWMBO and I then had a pleasant outdoor lunch in Shrewsbury before heading home where I did a spot of mod***ing before going out to a friend's birthday bash from which we have just returned, albeit a bit wet as it started raining just as we set off to walk home. At least the rain was warm and the evening's intake of red and amber fermented fruit juices helped us ignore it. All in all I've had worse days. Sleep tight everyone, unless you happen to be driving. I'm sorry to say that I'm not in teh least bit envious of this particular HO Envy 5640 and despite having considerable past satisfaction with HP printers if this one, and their next to useless website when it comes to problems, are any guide I won't buy another one. It can'yt even print its own instruction sheet but just pumps out with all the text missing. I shall try putting in a fresh black cartridge (it seems to use up those at a prodigious rate in any case) just to see if anything actually happens but I think it might be an early, and not exactly cheap candidate for an interface with my sledgehammer before going in the bin. 1 1

RMweb Premium Popular Post newbryford Posted July 10, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 10, 2019 My current TV viewing (and for the next few days) is mostly searching out the Apollo stuff on the back of the upcoming 50th anniversary of "Tranquility base here, the Eagle has landed". As a 7 year old, I was allowed to sleep on the sofa and was woken up to see the historic footage. Neil Armstrong - and Aldrin & Collins [*], are most certainly on my "heroes" list. I do wish, I'd bought one at the time, but Airfix 1/144 Apollo kits are going for silly amounts on ebay. Couple of days off with 2 1/2 rounds of golf planned. Stay safe folks. Cheers, Mick [*] and pretty much anyone who allows themselves to be strapped on top of a few tanks of liquid explosive.

If memory serves, a TV set was wheeled into our classroom. (This was the first time this happened.) In my memory I saw Armstrong egress from the LM live with my classmates. If I've done my sums correctly this would have happened at 12:56pm AEST. PBS is showing "Chasing the Moon" a six hour documentary series over three nights. It concludes tonight. There was so much excitement at the time - beyond the news. One of our early reader books was called "Sparky the Space Chimp". Every boy's birthday party involved astronaut or space themed birthday cards. Edited July 11, 2019 by Ozexpatriate
Popular Post chrisf
Good morning one and all I lost my rag with BT yesterday afternoon when my broadband connection failed twice within six hours. BT are sending me a device which apparently I just plug into the mains. This sounds suspiciously like some sort of wireless connection. They will be sending an engineer next week, which means that I must think of some intelligent questions to ask. Tomorrow will see The Tie’s last appearance for a while. I feel that I have allowed it to become over exposed and devalued. At a certain mega event last Saturday there were hundreds of rainbow ties. The majority were worn with T shirts, which do not have collars. I know nothing of fashion and care even less. What I do know is that ties are now so blatantly out of fashion that I sport mine once in a while to discreetly (?) signify my LGBT affiliation. However, the profusion of ties and the disrespectful treatment accorded them at the weekend have together led to my decision. The Tie’s sabbatical will begin once my aunt and I have had lunch, somewhere in Bristol. Some will recall that I owe my aunt a massive debt of gratitude for being there for me almost a year ago! My other reason for visiting Bristol is to pay a return visit to Pride. To get around the city I will be able to rely on my bus pass, save for driving my aunt to and from her chosen eating place tomorrow. It took too long to find out when breakfast is served at the Premier Inn at Cribbs Causeway where I will be staying. Why did I expect the information to be on the webshite? Finding a human to assist was not as easy as it might have been. If that all goes mammaries up, the bus from the hotel to the city centre goes past a ‘Spoons. Do not expect me to march on an empty stomach! After the festivities on Saturday I may briefly [dis]grace the portals of a night club before braving the bus back to the hotel. I have quite an early start on Sunday morning to attend a gig at Hatfield House. I’m back here on Monday morning. Best wishes to all Chris 15

RMweb Premium TheQ Posted July 11, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 11, 2019 Mooring Awl Inner, temple hare, I fell asleep at around 20:30 (reading a book) but was awake again by midnight, and the rest of the time was very intermittant dozing.. It didn't help when I first woke and realised what ive got to do to sort out the first major system...more work... Very dark when I got up, more heavy dark clouds, there had just been a shower of rain.. this is doing the jungle no good at all. When out on Patrol with Ben the Border Collie, I noticed in the hedge I'd cut on Saturday there was a bramble sticking out..18 inches of growth in 4 and a bit days... I saw a barn owl on the way in, quite near home, normally they are a bit further on.. Our moon landing viewing at school was all to be ushered into the school hall / gym and a TV was on the stage. Black and white grainy pictures viewed from 50+ feet isn't good viewing.. I had the airfix saturn 5 and later the space shuttle, sadlly like all my airfix models they went missing when we / my parents moved.. Should you wish to review your youth the revell Saturn 5 and Space shuttle are still available new at reasonable prices.. Time to .. go back into batlle with these systems...
RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted July 11, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 11, 2019 A bit cooler here this morning. The new pool pump was installed last night after learning how to make glued joints between various adaptors needed to make the connections. It certainly does the business. This morning's task is to get some pallets out of the shed so that Beth and a friend can construct some compost bins. My other task is to try and excavate a stop tap that isn't working. If I can rejuvenate it I will be able to make a proper outside tap outside the shed door. I remember the fist moon landing very well and was absolutely enthralled by it at the time. Our Chapel youth group had a sleep over at our youth leader's house. I was somewhat distracted by the close presence of Jaqueline Gaskell while watching the landing. Our Physics class watched one of the later landings that transmitted colour pictures. Those were transmitted during school hours and my main memory is of the picture going off part way through. I believe that someone pointed the camera at the sun and the receptors burnt out. Dave, glad that you have progress with the toe. I have some tree loppers that would make short work of it is all else fails. Jamie 19
