RMweb Premium Popular Post PhilJ W Posted July 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 8, 2019 Morning all from Estuary-Land. The parking problem appears to be resolved now that one of the two couples living next door has gone. Their landlady telephoned me a couple of weeks ago on another matter (too much noise, didn't affect me much but complaints had been made). I did mention that there was two couples living there and it turns out that the original tenants were in breach of their agreement by letting the second couple live there. The second couple departed at the weekend together with the large Transit van. Hopefully this has sorted matters. 19

Part of the road is gravel but you won't need four-wheel drive. There are lots of great views and alpine meadows and it doesn't take much time. Unfortunately we wont have a car. Does sound interesting though. We are at the NMRA convention till Saturday when we fly elsewhere. Another good nights sleep after visitng a few new breweries to us plus a few that we havent visited for a while. We just have to be careful as the friend that is with us for fisrt part of the trip cant drink due to his high iron level. Once at the convention though he will no doubt be doing layout visits and clinics during the day and we can go off ot various breweries and meet up later.

RMweb Gold Tony_S Posted July 8, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 8, 2019 Phil being blocked in his own drive reminded me of when I helped MiL. This is before she handed in her driving licence. She lives in a flat with basement parking. She had two places but other people’s stuff had spread into both her spaces, including a pair of garage doors someone was “looking after”. There was a chap who purely self appointed considered himself “boss of the garage”. I explained that all the crap was where I wanted to put a storage cabinet for MiLs walking frame and other mobility stuff. He said he would get it sorted. I reminded him that MiL had been politely asking for a while. I then told him not to worry as I would bring the Land Rover down and move it for him. Apparently this did the trick. I didn’t think I was at all threatening. I don’t think I meant to be. I am quite nice. Apparently he wasn’t used to being spoken to “like that”. This is certainly true of chez Flavio. RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted July 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 8, 2019 (edited) Evening all from a very warm Charente. The fangs are in place and I have not yet been asked to re tread them. The fosse has been emptied, along with the grease trap/ 20.5 cubic metres. However things in the family are not so good. Yesterday we found out by text from No 2 son, that his wife of 6 years has left him. Today a very good friend told us that he had an ulcerated bowel in April and now has a colostomy. In his usual fashion he has not had any aftercare or follow ups. Beth used to be secretary to a bowel surgeon and knows what can happen if things don't go right. We aren't supposed to know what has happened. We saw Paul back in June and he seemed well but had lost weight. We just hope that the friends can persuade him to ring us and talk about what's going on. The friends are trying to persuade him to come out to France to have some time with us. Obviously we are both very worried for him but can't do too much from this distance. Aren't families marvellous things. The only good thing to come out of all this is that he now wants us to sell the house that they've been living in. That will sort things out in various areas for us. However our main concern is for Paul. Regards Jamie Edited July 8, 2019 by jamie92208
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted July 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 8, 2019 Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Looks as if the parking situation is sorted but its early days yet. My friends young lad has gone on a school trip until Friday, the first time he has gone away on his own. It involves sleeping in a (docked) lightship for the duration, never had anything like that when I was his age.

tigerburnie
Goodness, some folk are having strife in their lives, I can only say I hope some sort of amicable outcome can come from all of this, my ailments sort of pale into insignificance, stay strong and safe all. 4 4
RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted July 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 8, 2019 Evening. Tres knackered after first day back at work, but it's not like it's bad work to go back to as in days of yore. Decision made as to theme of the O gauge, a twig off a branch in the Forest of Dean area (The 'Forest of Nead'....) as the area was plastered in them, with a feed to a colliery at the 'other' end using two exchange sidings, and a siding to a 'processing works' (like the plastics factory at, er , need to look at my book) so vans, maybe a tanker, sort of thing. Kind of. So that means I will need - a Pannier! There, I've said it. I'm out (with apologies to Chris) I am going to model the BR(W) region! I have an industrial loco I made years ago, and a '350' (08 to younger listeners) although that isn't really appropriate but I like them. A pannier will come along when the rivetted tank ones come out. Black early emblem era, some PO wagons with P numbers still around etc. 16

Chris I may have mentioned that Matthew had quite severe colour vision deficiency. For him, pink, lime green and grey were all the same. His grandfather’s (Aditi’s Dad) vision was identical. FiL had a silver Volvo followed by what he said was an identical green one. Anyway Matthew and I were shopping for trainers when he was in reception class. He really liked one pair. I said I was happy to buy them but did he know they were pink. He immediately said he didn’t want them anymore. He said he didn’t want the other boys making fun of him. So even though he couldn’t distinguish pink he knew what the result could be. He had already had to deal with racist abuse (in reception class!) so he could probably guess what would happen if he had pink trainers.

Most of my stock is London Midland BR but I also have various other locos/coaches just because I like them. It will be OO gauge. My larger scale activity (or inactivity to be honest) is 1/48 Narrow gauge. 15

A trip through the various Pannier Papers is worth the time, as is getting a look at Volumes 1 and 2 of Neil Parkhouse's Railways of Gloucestershire. Afaik, the rivetted varieties were generally built by outside contractors, and tended to have the early cabs. (round windows) and the flatter style of roof. Ignore the 67xx as they were not vacuum fitted and only intended for yard shunting. 6 1
RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted July 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 8, 2019 (edited) Yup, it's the outside manufactured rivetty one I want - because that's what I want! Not bothered if that loco wasn't allocated to my imaginary area, as long as it has the right number for the design. I have several volumes of Pannier Papers....shhhh..... Edit continuation... I'm not so keen on the 'modern' 8750 type of cab, although in time if funds allow a second one will be of that configuration, just for variety. RMweb Premium Popular Post AndyB Posted July 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 8, 2019 Evening all. Apologies for lack of attendance in recent weeks. Elderly parent had a stroke and has been in hospital for a couple of months. No chance of a return to home so I've spent the last week or so sorting out a care home and transferring furniture to make it homely. As well as daily visits to hospital to keep spirits up. I'd rather hoped that I'd get some thanks. Quite the opposite and tonight I copped for both barrels. Seems nothing is good enough unless it involved a return home. Meanwhile other visitors get the all "sweetness and light" version. Looking forward to the annual migration north to Deeside and a break. Before that though this week sees a reunion of the RAF unit I worked in. 25 years since we were put out to grass. 2
