RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted May 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 8, 2019 Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. My Euro elections ballot paper dropped onto the mat this morning (postal vote). I have duly recorded my vote and dispatched said ballot paper. It remains to be seen if anyone on the ballot paper will take their seat in Brussels though. 11
RMweb Premium Popular Post Dave Hunt Posted May 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 8, 2019 Well, the mystery tour has turned out to be South West Scotland with an overnight stop on the way up at a friends' place in Culgaith on the Settle & Carlisle so with the G&SW connection it's good Midland country. Yesterday we went across to Portpatrick, which is somewhere I haven't been in 25 years or so but hasn't changed and is still a very nice little harbour with some good seafood. Today was the Galloway forest where we saw red kites by the dozen closer than I've ever seen them before plus some red deer. We also stopped at a cafe run by a Dutch bloke who made some excellent Dutch pancakes so the diet has taken a bashing. Tomorrow is as yet unknown for content. My sympathies go to Andy B and I can empathise with his feelings as I went through the same when my Mum had her series of strokes and died nearly two years ago. People kept giving me the same advice that you are getting now Andy and at this distance in time I realise that they were right. You did what you could. Have a good evening and a peaceful night unless you are in some other time zone when you'll have to make other arrangements. Dave 19

RMweb Premium Popular Post AndyB Posted May 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 8, 2019 (edited) Thanks to all of you who have taken the trouble to respond to my post. Some years ago dad was terminally ill and I visited him each day, balancing the needs of a young family and sup porting mum. Dad was in and out of hospital regularly. Long story short when he went into hospital after a fall towards the end I was told he'd be fine and to see him the next morning. To be honest it'd been a tough day and I was grateful for a night "off". At 02.00 I was phoned and told (very matter of factly) "Your dad is dead. At 01.25. Do you want to see him now at the ward or in the morning at the mortuary?" I've felt guilty ever since. So when it comes to trying to nurse mum I'm trying not to "drop the ball". Yesterday I happened to speak to one of dad's nurses. It was a very emotional chat and hopefully in time I'll see it differently. Popular Post lightengine
My tv has a bright light about 3" in from the top right corner and more recently seems to have several similar but feinter lights along the bottom. I phoned LG and she asked for the model number. She then told me it was made in 2014. I told her the problem and she said they were aware that 2014 manufactured tv's had this backlight problem. It would be £350ish to fix. I suggested as it was a known problem it should be fixed for free even though it's outside of the 1 year warranty. John Lewis were much more accommodating and after finding my data he told me that as I had 5 months left on their free 5 year warranty he would send an engineer on Friday. He sounded quite surprised when I told him about LG saying that it was a known problem. I won't be buying an LG product again but I will buy from John Lewis again. 12

tigerburnie
Evening all, what a wet and grotty day, but everything needs the water, might even tempt a Salmon to run the local river(if there's any left as we have a huge population of seals camped at the river mouth). We did a hobble round the Asdas with both of us sore with that nice Mr. Arthur Itis paying our bones a visit. Weather will hopefully improve soon as I need to do some prep work before the roofing sheets arrive, would be nice if it was dry. I was in for a DCC controller on ebay, but was outbid, prices seem to be going up and up, the modelling tokens are being severely stretched just now. 1

I looked up "R" and learned it was similar to "S" and while less piratical sounding, that description was not very helpful, and yes I am being slightly facetious, I did note that, "S" stands for statistics, "R" follows "S" as the gnu walks etc. Modern students really need a stronger basis in statistical analysis than I was given - particularly on the mathematical side, given the burgeoning employment opportunities for data scientists in AI programming. Design of experiments was the most complex topic I was introduced to.

RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted May 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 8, 2019 Good evening everyone This morning’s rain lasted all day, although it lessened during the afternoon and strangely enough it wasn’t very dark whilst it was raining, particularly in the afternoon, it finally stopped around 8:00 this evening. A little bit more progress has been made in the cellar. As I only planned to work up until dinner time, I decided to concentrate on a couple of small fiddly bits. First I tackled the area above the door at the top of the stairs, for this I cut and fitted the narrow piece above and Tom the rear of cellar the door. It is just over 4” wide and just under 30” long, so drilling a 65mm hole in the centre, without snapping the piece meant I had to work very carefully. After several test fits, removing a small amount and re fitting it, I finally got it right and it looks really good. That done, I turned my attention to the bottom of the stairs. The slope above the stairs is too long to enable a single piece of board to fit, so it meant using two pieces. So I decided to put the short piece at the bottom of the stairs where a couple of cut outs are required, one on each side where the slope meets the framing around the floor beam ends. I felt it would be a lot easier to handle a small piece, when I was checking and rechecking the fit. I’m hoping that I can get the final 2 panels up tomorrow. Once done, I packed up and got changed before dinner. After dinner I decorated the cupcakes, ready for the arrival of the Mongol horde grandkids. Which it turns out wasn’t time wasted as the cakes went down very well. Goodnight all
RMweb Premium Popular Post Gwiwer Posted May 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 8, 2019 (edited) Evening all. Just popping in to record a rather better day today. Except the weather. My plans for a day out were well and truly rained off but that allowed me a day in during which I finally managed to fix numerous electrics problems on the layout enjoyed some coffee and a nice bacon sandwich for lunch. SWMBO has commented that the past few days have felt easier and she feels there is a way back to the normality of before. It might be a long road but at least she can see the white lines. Off to bed now. I have a trip booked tomorrow taking me from here to Norwich to Peterborough and back. Because I can and because the advance fares with a senior railcard were just ridiculous. The whole lot is costing me just £13 which is somewhat less than a privilege single to Norwich for just the first leg. Night all. RMweb Premium BR60103 Posted May 9, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 9, 2019 We were in Stratford today (no, not that one. nor that one either.) to the Shaxpur festival and saw Henry VIII. I first (and last) saw that there about 1962 with a school group. Hadn't the faintest idea what was going on then; a little better now but I really can't tell some characters apart. But the production was well done and reasonably traditional. When I had a low opening to duck through, I added a sheet of Styrofoam insulation to cover the top board. I also kept a cap lined with bubble wrap handy as the are beyond was the crawl space. On my train layout I have some plumbing insulation (foam plastic tube that goes around pipes) over the 1x3 beams and joists.
Popular Post chrisf
Good morning one and all As if you didn’t know, I sometimes write this stuff the night before. This time I did so to the accompaniment of Radio 2’s Folk Show, which ended with “Battle of the Somme” by Sam Sweeney. If ever there was a reason for not confining folk music to its tiny little ghetto on Wednesday nights and let it run free on daytime radio it is that track. Fortunately I have a signed copy of the CD and can play it whenever I like but that’s not the point. I can’t help feeling that people like much of what is played on Radio 2 because they have never heard anything else. Open up your ears, my dears, because there is lots of good stuff out there. I’m not entirely disappointed that the gardening was rained off yesterday. This enabled me to do a little more mucking-out and rediscover the odd book thought to be irretrievably lost. The fate of the DVD “Traction 2018 Vol 2” is a puzzle, for it has disappeared before I had the chance to play it. Never mind: if it is anything like most things I mislay it will turn up if I stop looking for it. Ahead of the appearance by Ninebarrow in Bedford later in the month I have been checking which of their CDs I already own – three, which is one more than I recall. Tonight I’m off to The Stables for Jim Causley in concert - always entertaining, and for the right reasons. I’ve packed my bag for the weekend, except for the sun block which I’m not entirely sure I’ll need. It was interesting to see how often various news bulletins featured the story of the man and his medals that I mentioned yesterday. Although the case has raised awareness I suspect that we will hear no more about it. One does wonder how many more comparable wrongs that need righting are still out there despite the welcome changes in the law of recent years. Let justice prevail. Best wishes to all Chris 17
Popular Post Robert
Morning All, It is a rather pleasant morning in this part of the world. A little warmer than it has been, and dry but with a certain amount of cloud - particularly over the hills. 10 hours ago, AndyB said: I've felt guilty ever since. We are all the product of our experiences, and we all have times when we wish we had handled or done things differently. However, we are all human and although we sometimes make mistakes, some things are just out of our control. This isn't always easy to accept! Have a good day everyone... 13 5 1
