I hope you have a selection of tea, coffee soft drinks and biscuits ready for the shedmen. When we had our garage doors fitted recently one of the fitters when asked how he liked tea , he said “same colour as the window frames”. As they are rosewood “effect”  I assumed he meant strong.

Having worked in the building trade for 38 years I only know one way to make tea. It's a bit like all the women in my life - hot, sweet and strong!

I have just seen the first bat of the year. Last year I didn’t see one until late in the summer and the year before that I saw none.

Evening all from Estuary-Land. Recovered now from the weekends exertions. Still chasing up my energy supplier about the 'dead' gas meter, I suspect it was not turned on when it was installed a couple of weeks ago so its not recording my gas usage. I have now informed them twice without reply.

I haven't seen any this year, normally they are visible at dusk near our clubhouse.

Evening all.

 

No pages have been read today.  It has been a challenging one coping with SWMBO condition worsening from where it has been though not as bad as it has reached.  It seems I am now required to be at home at all times other than my normal working hours in case she needs my attention.  I have two weeks leave coming up next month and had hoped to get some time away.  Most of that has had to be cancelled as she is too anxious and - her word - scared of being left alone.  

 

I have a two-night trip to Inverness booked and paid for and which, in order to be with someone, SWMBO has arranged to go to the other end of our isles and stay with friends in Cornwall taking most of the week off work.  

 

This isn't going to be fun.

It looks as if the study Aditi has cleared will be re-painted magnolia. Aditi did suggest a colour (almost magnolia) we used used for another room once but it seems to be discontinued. Fortunately magnolia is unlikely to be discontinued and I have a few cans of it anyway. With all the bookshelves there isn’t a huge amount of wall visible anyway. 

So  I suspect tomorrow I will be filling in cracks and holes ready for painting.  She did say she would do it and I know it was genuinely meant but I can reach the tops of the walls and ceilings upstairs without a ladder so it would be more sensible for me to do it. She had done all the cleaning and removal of stuff which is the bit I dislike most anyway.

Good evening everyone

 

Whilst I was doing some weeding and general tidying up in the garden this morning, I noticed a few bees buzzing around. Then I noticed one going in a small hole in a mould of earth that is piled up beside the old buddliea bush a few seconds later it came back out again. At first I thought there was just the single bee, but after watching for a while, I saw there was quite a few of them, I then observed one going in as one was coming out. So, I think they must be either burrowing or mining bees nesting. I was hoping to move the earth later in the year, but I think I’ll leave that now until early autumn now. 

 

My first task this afternoon, using some of the pallet wood, I constructed a temporary frame that measured 2400mm x 1200mm, ie, the same size as a full sheet of plasterboard. I then carried the frame down the outside cellar steps and in through the cellar doors to see if it was possible to get a full sheet in without it hitting the base of the above balcony. The good news is there is plenty of room, but it will take 2 people to do it. 

 

I then dismantled the frame and decided to make a start on the stands. When I measured the sizes of some of the pallet wood this morning, the bits I intended to use for the main part of the stand weren’t quite as big as I first thought. So cutting a channel in them with my router was out of the question, as it would have weakened them too much. A bit of a rethink was needed and a quick design change meant I could crack on. By the end of the afternoon I’d completed 3 of the 4 stands. The only thing that is missing from them are the retaining plate, which will keep the spreader clamp in place. Hopefully, I’ll be able to make them and the last stand later in the week. 

 

The stand is just over 4ft high and the clamp will extend to 3ft. As the cellar ceiling is just over 6ft in height 4 of these will easily extend enough to hold a sheet of plasterboard against the beams, leaving both of my hands free to fix them in place. These have been made from what was essentially waste materials, so have cost me nothing more than a couple of hours work.

Here in Greater Vancouver, we are being told we now have the highest gas prices ever in North America. But I won't ask those in the UK to feel too sorry for us - it's C$1.73 per litre for regular, which is equivalent to GBP 0.99.

Good morning one and all

 

Those who mentioned composing a post off the forum and then posting it are of course quite right.  I do it myself and more often than you may realise.  My trick is to use a Word file which I then copy and paste.  At times I depart from my prepared text, usually when something has happened to make what I was going to say quite inappropriate.  It is good practice though and I should do it more often – preferably when I haven’t been out all day.

 

Joseph, you are quite right, ale is compulsory with morris.  For 81C’s information, the degree of mental agility and physical fitness that a typical side displays, combining ability to remember the dance with actually executing it, is something to which you and I can only aspire.  I should also point out that in Ampthill on May Day my friends and I are still carrying out quality control long after the dancers have gone.  We leave the dancing to the experts.   Actually, I should pay a bit more attention than usual to the dances.  Firstly, I have not seen Golden Hare before.  They are a new and young side and just possibly a tad more energetic than their distinguished precursors Redbornstoke.  Secondly, in just over a week there is a distinct possibility that I will be sharing a procession with a detachment of Great Western Morris.  What did I say about leaving the dancing to the experts?

 

One job that needs doing before Wednesday morning is to make sense of the revised bus timetable between Bedford and Ampthill.  It was put through the mincer over Christmas and I doubt that the result was much of an improvement.  This is why I will now have to drive to Ampthill and go back for the car the next day.

John, that quote from Facebook about the loaded gun was very thought provoking.

S-Day is here and it's H-Hour minus 1½. I just hope that everything works as planned otherwise I will not be happy. Always the pessimist, me!

Mine commences at 0800 hours today but they are just building the timber base which will be raised so not that straightforward. the actual shed itself wont commwnce till next week once I have ordered and have  the materials delivered. I was going to buy a chopsaw but a friend has offered me the loan of his.

 

However today I will be the tea boy when not doing some crust earning weathering and decoder installations.

Ey up!

No shed building scheduled here but a visit from the carpet man to check our measurements will occur today. 

Looks like our plasterer should be finished on Friday, carpet to be delivered on Thursday next week then I have a bit of curtain rail re hanging to do, move furniture etc and we should be back to "normal" whatever that is.

 

Mugatea then off to surgery for a quick test or two.

5.5 hours sleep, not enough but at least what I had was reasonably solid.

 

New traffic lights outside the Ex cremated pub, though it appears to be nothing to do with it, they appear to be putting in underground piping for the telephone system..

 

 The blocking of the A11 yesterday was a two car accident caused by a deer, unfortunately a driver was killed and someone else badly injured when a lorry ran into the accident..

 

Yesterdays work on this weeks major system went well, so this morning I start with a turn a switch, 40 minute section, turn a switch, then a 286minutes section before the next switch turn.

 

Also I finally managed to get to see the head of HR and get my access to the online assessment forms re enabled. I got locked out when they changed the passwords from a minimum of 8 characters to a minimum of 10. This has been duly filled in an hopfully thats the last i'll see of it until I have to fill in the 6 month progress section.

 

Ps Since when was the head of HR young enough to be my daughter, possibly Granddaughter.

 

Time to go go turn that switch.

 

OH i meant to say we have another step forward in the Lab extension as they drilled though the wall and connected up the Gas in and Gas out pipes to the A/C equipment. once the power is connected (and I saw the men wandering around for that. they'lll be able to power and gas up.
