AndyID
We do very little really, as we don't celebrate, not being Christians. We just get some things for friends kids, which nowadays seems to be grand-kids.....eek. MrsID is, I'm like you, but I might have some transcendental medication.
chrisf
Good morning one and all, with apologies for missing GDB’s birthday. My trip to Manchester yesterday was typical WCML – eight minutes late in each direction. The return journey from Man Picc to my front door took under three hours, thanks to a late running X5! The show was very good. I bought a few things and met loads of people. It’s going to be a busy week. On Tuesday the LCGB Bedford Branch welcomes David Percival and on Wednesday I must write an account of his talk. Thursday see a concert by Chris Wood, one of the finest and most uncompromising musicians ever to pick up a guitar, at The Stables. On Saturday I will be at the Peterborough show with The Tie during the day and dining with a lady in the evening at a gastro pub in Helpston. Somewhere in that lot I need to order some Swiss francs and euros for my Christmas and New Year holiday and collect my prescription – oh, and I promised my editor that I would write him another caption before I go on holiday. I’ll say more about Monday tomorrow. Today I shall visit Pendon for the diesel day and hope that the cafe at Root One will be open for breakfast ‘cos I’ll be hungry by then! Warm thoughts to all in distress or missing. Chris
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 2, 2018 (edited) Morning from a room overlooking Leeds station. Despite the Northern rail strike making those trians actually running plus overhed wire problems North of York cancelling and delaying many trains through Leeds we got seats. It just worked out well but for many for instance after a pint in the station buffet at Stalybridge, at Manchester Piccadilly there must have been hundreds not able to get on an Edinburgh bound train. Loads of footy fans heading somewhere almost causing the train to be cancelled as apparently they were vandalising the train according to the station announcements. Luckily we were heading the other direction to Sheffield. Another quick drink in the Sheffield Tap in the station we headed to Sentinal Brewing and got settled in there just as the football nearby ground emptied. Luckily most of the fans walked by the brewery no doubt wanting just an ordinary lager rather than a decent brew. A few more pubs visited in Sheffield then it was back to Leeds on a very crowded four car XC train but we had seat reservations that we could get to before it filled up, so were fine. After checking into the hotel we were off to Northern Monk Brewery - great brews although they could have turned down the music volume a bit considering it wasn't that busy. Luckily they did turn it down after a while. on the way back we stopped by a new craft beer bar called Craft Asylum no1 with a good range of ales and craft brews, before calling it a night. This morning we head home stopping in Luton for a quick pint in a good pub near the station. Our next away trip will be on another Continent P.S. Baz - saw your post yesterday about the Townhouse pub - not visited this trip but have been in there a few times some years ago. RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 2, 2018 Morning all from a wet and windy corner of the world but no yellow jackets in sight even blown on the wind. I can't compete with the Van Clomp original that Mike once owned but I have put up a couple of railway related pictures in the house was very pleased to be able to get this up in the sitting room. Titled 'Midland Sunrise' it was done in pastels by a late friend of mine who was a driver at Holbeck. He offered to swap it for a book of mine that he wanted. It appealed to me on many levels particularly as I remember seeing the last Garratt in Chesterfield as a 4 year old. Peter made the frame and when it arrived the Garratt had acquired the correct number and in the bottom right hand corner a bobby wearing a cape had appeared riding his bike towards the under bridge. At the time I patrolled our village on a pushbike wearing a cape. Peter was taken far too young by the big C and the picture is a great reminder of him. Andyram, I have sympathy for you. I did exactly the same in a Moreasons car park on a low bollard but fortunately the underside wasn't damaged so I just lived with the damage for a few years before getting the door sorted before bringing the Volvo to France. What I didn't tell Beth was that I' been visiting the model railway shop that was accessed from that particular car park. Chrisf, the 8 minutes late theme could end up with you being compared to Reggie Perrin if it continues, wasn't his train always 11 minutes late for some reason or other. Anyway, various things got done yesterday including picking up the sharpened chain for the saw, 3.5 instead of 36 Euros. A bit of soldering in the shed and a nice meal rounded off a fairly restful day. This morning will be a pottering one then this afternoon Beth will be playing at the open mike in the local bar before we go to some friends for a meal. Regards to all. RMweb Premium TheQ Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 2, 2018 Mooring Awl, inner Temple here. Not a good nights sleep Android has been updated. Ben the Border Collie refused his morning patrol. Supermarket bollards are expensive, managers are supposed to claim for them from the customers car insurance, 15 years ago they were £600 each to replace. Bluebottle, congratulations on the future event, please be careful with the new arrival. My parents next door neighbours child took the baby from the cot while the mother was in the kitchen. Sadly he dropped it, and it didn't survive. Must go, time to go to the moorings, summer waterproofs weather I think...
AndyID
I've tried and the only way that always works is to upload to YouTube then create a link. Also John (CB's) link doesn't seem to work for me try this one https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-bristol-46397261 Jamie Well, it would have to be BBC Bristol, wouldn't it?

RMweb Premium Barry O Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 2, 2018 Ey up! I loaded some videos via Facebook and YouTube in the end (now on the chapel en le frith thread) Now, do I go to the cricket officials AGM in Barnsley today or stay at home and do some repairs to some of my locos? Andy, my car has a repair to both front apron corners. Mainly due to not being able to see anything low down at the front. Unfortunately it happens. I am not a fan of railway shows with narrow aisles so don't attend the ones I know to have them. As I have got older I get less tolerant of people wandering around in front of me men for some reason. Best regards to all who ail! Hope our missing ERs are ok. Baz
Purley Oaks
Morning all More house hunting on the cards today; even popped into a new development built by Cala yesterday - some 4/5 bedroom detached houses with stunning kitchens and landings, but who needs 4/5 huge dble bedrooms with en-suite? We don't have the ££ anyway. Surprised how much I liked them, though, have always shied away from new-builds before. Andrew P, hope your floor turns out ok. Dom, have a fab trip to Lanzarote when it comes. Met some pals in York last week - it was the easiest place to meet, one from Yorks, one Lancs and me in Edinburgh. So far so good; my train was 5 late, the guy coming from Bridlington on a two hour bus trip was on time, whilst the person coming from Warrington suffered 3 cancelled Northern trains from Manchester and arrived nearly 2 hours late for a 60 mile trip. He's convinced that Northern are cancelling trains to save money, allegedly. The problem was that they weren't told of the cancellations until 5 minutes before the train was due, so until then lived in hope. And, as the trains were cancelled rather than late, he's unable to claim compensation because they weren't "late". My train home was 55 late, so I'll get half the return fare refunded. Quiet night in last night after the party atmosphere of Friday night. Hope your days are filled with Christmas joy (ahem)! Mal
RMweb Premium AndyB Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 2, 2018 Morning all, So, for a couple of days this week I was working off site. Although I didn't get the chance to step outside - it was a somewhat intense timetable - it was evident that the sky was blue and the sun shining bright. Quite a change from when I pitched up at LGW in heavy rain and fog. Just been reading an Ofsted report. One wonders if the inspectors are blind & deaf, stupid, or just paid to turn a blind eye. Put at its most charitable they must get a special prescription at Specsavers - "Rose Tinted, Max". Hey-ho. Today I've earmarked an hour or so to tidy the workbench. It's time to make a start on the new layout, and a tidy place to work is the best way forward, methinks. Have a nice day everyone. Wonder if GDB has a hangover this morning after the celebrations.
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 2, 2018 Morning all, Currently reasonable outside but showers are expected and there are some grey skies up above so the forecast might be right. ChrisF once again hides his light beneath a bushel when he talks of 'writing captions' as his latest work in 'Bylines' amounts to filling a goodly part of a page with just two, highly informative, captions of a far more erudite standard and accuracy than the words penned by another captioneer in the same issue. And I do wonder if those bogie vans were there for what was at one time the 19.53 Kidderminster-Paddington parcels which used to convey mail order traffic from Kidderminster? Anyway back to today and 'a few things' need to be acquired from Tesco so I have been informed - so that only means half a trolley load (but we only ever use the smaller trolleys lest you all get the wrong impression). Have a good day one and all
RMweb Gold Tony_S Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 2, 2018 Morning all. Not an ER this morning unless waking up in the night counts. There may be a trip out to collect some parcels from a supermarket. Or possibly the trip will be postponed until tomorrow. Have a good day. RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 2, 2018 Good morning everyone It’s raining again, however, as I don’t have to go outside today it matters not one jot! Breakfast has been consumed and the second muggertea is almost finished, so it’s back to tidying up the living and dining rooms, before I get the vacuum cleaner out! Jamie, my preferred painting medium is pastels and I’ve done quite a few over the years, I’ll try to find some and see if I can post them on here. Back later.

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 2, 2018 Morning all from Estuary-Land. I too managed to scrape my car in a supermarket car park. The local Asda's car park is in the basement of the store which means that thereare dozens of pillars supporting the building above. As I was reversing into a bay alongside one of the pillars I heard a scraping sound, when I checked there were some bad scratches on the rear wheel arch. The cause was the bottom 18 inches of the pillar widened out by 3 or 4 inches and this was not visible in my mirrors. Muggatee awaits, be back later. RMweb Premium Barry O Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 2, 2018 the weather here is definitely "changeable". We were about to go for a walk in the sun...now back to chuckinitdarn so time for another decaf! Andrew P - has the floor dried out? Hope the repair is simple and not too messy. Ian (Roundhouse), Northern Monk is next door to our old club rooms (Holbeck Mills) and is also in a registered red light area..... Never been to Northern Monk but youngest Herbert bought me some cans of their beers ..very nice but a bit strong for my liking. Baz

Baz Not seen any sign of lasies of the night in our numerous visits in that area. Must try harder next time! Now at Kettering station on a train due to numerous signals failing ahead of us. An all too common situation on NR these days. A neighbour of ours who works for NR said that this was going to happen the way NR have been dealing with signalling of recent. At least we have a comfy seat in first class but no chance of getting to the buffet two coaches due wn the train.
RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 2, 2018 (edited) Morning. Edit -I see that took me so long to type it is now afternoon! I too managed to scrape the sill of my (new-sh) car in a multi-storey car park, on a sticky-out kerb that you can't see in the mirrors. Bah. The transcendental medication sounds good, AndyID. We have a bottle of rather expensive wine tucked away for our 'non-denominational holiday period' evening. Cloudy Bay Te Koko, rather more money than we would usually spend, but as I now drink very little and Debs hardly at all, it is a treat and reminder of several great holidays in New Zealand. (Out In-laws are Kiwis). Not feeling too good today, almost a jet-lagged feeling. Not sure what's going on. Lazy day prescribed. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 2, 2018 Not seen any sign of lasies of the night in our numerous visits in that area. Must try harder next time! From my memories of it I wouldn't bother looking. Just before I retired I used to cycle back from the East side of Leeds and my route took me down Water Lane. It was 'interesting at 02.15 hrs. However I only got sort of propositioned once and that was a bit earlier in my ride at the bottom of Briggate when I pulled alongside a stretched limo at the traffic lights, a youngish female hand emerged and groped my derriere, which was lycra covered. At the age of 49 I was quite chuffed that she thought it was a suitable target. Jamie
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 2, 2018 The only time I gave been propositioned was in a casino in Macau with my other half next to me. After a 17 minute delay and a very slow crawl on the relief line around Wellingborough we were only 7 late into Luton. Now enjoying a final pibtof the weekend in the Bricklayers Arms. A nice pint of Hilltop Stout and my other half on Stockport Ginger Tinge. Unfortunately it's a great white worm back from here to East Croydon thrn a Southern service home. No it's not dried out yet, And Yes it will be messy and noisy, as they have to come in with Kango's and dig out the concrete to find the pipes, and cure the leak. Not good just before Christmas or any time of year for that matter. Thanks for asking. Edited December 2, 2018 by Andrew P
