RMweb Premium TheQ Posted July 21, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 21, 2018 (edited) I was using "branch" specifically in terms of its present status; I'm quite aware of its former glories! There's a stretch of the former trackbed clearly visible from the road near Collingbourne Ducis and I try to visualise "Galloping Alice" on the Southampton Express. I worked on the excavations at Ludgershall Castle in the summer of '69, so I expect you were around then. We were sleeping on the floors at the local secondary school.[/quote Which may have been more comfortable than those in tents in the moat on the eastern side of the bailey. I've walked the track from Ludgershall to the Collingbournes, and my mother was born just north of there in Aughton, when granddad was a lengthman, later he was ganger at Ludgershall. Granddad kept beehives along the side of the track just north of bridge 13, and sometimes round the west side of the ramparts of the castle. There were two secondary schools, Tidworth down secondary modern boys school which i attended, which was between Tidworth road and the branch line to Tidworth, and the girls school almost opposite our house on Short Street ( the longest street in the village, now town) I too worked on those excavations, as a school boy, for two summers 69 and 70, somewhere in the depths of my paperwork, is the invite to help, from professor Peter Addyman. I think the letter is with my copy of the professor's book on the excavations. It helped that my grandfather ( the above mentioned) who lived in Butt street was custodian of the castle, and an uncle was a pc in the police station at the castle entrance, which was in front of the finds shed. I would have worked a third year, but we moved...to the outer hebridies So the chances are we've met, or at least seen each other, on our knees, trowel in hand... RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted July 21, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 21, 2018 Good evening everyone I had a play with the new toys I bought from the Tatton Flower Show, they don’t half make pruning the taller flowers a lot easier. I got quite carried away and ended up taking two wheelbarrow loads of cuttings to the green bin! After dinner I continued working on the gearbox I started earlier in the week, it’s now almost complete, all I’ve got to do is give it a good clean and then re-grease it and give it a bit of a run to bed everything in and then it’s good to go. Once tea had been eaten I gave the potted plants a bit of a water then settled down in front of the idiots lantern and watched some recorded TV with a bottle of red. Goodnight all.

RMweb Premium Popular Post southern42 Posted July 22, 2018 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 22, 2018 ' Evening all from red dragon land. At least she didn't do what our daughter did when she graduated from NJIT. We were looking down on the proceedings and were able to see quite clearly the "HI MUM" she had stuck on the top of her mortar board in big orange letters. She's always had a wicked sense of humor. Not a wicked sense of humour in our youngest's case, on Friday, but a deep sense of loyalty and gratitude to her study time in New York prior to starting the degree course in Liverpool. Under the gown, as permitted, lay youngest's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Centennial Honors gold stole which was visible back and front and made it easy to spot even right from the back of the top circle of the Philharmonic building. The stole was accompanied by the Key Medallion round the neck and (except during the graduation ceremony) the Centennial Honors Tassel on the hat. Spectacular, especially outside in the wet and dismal conditions. They sure brightened up a damp day. Wicked day for me at West Shore's Grand Opening of the Track. I was asked to drive the loco to the Station Platform for the Naming Ceremony and do the first run with the dignitaries (County and Town Mayors, Councillors, and Llandudno's Alice). A few nerves kicked in as The Brigadier, BR(W) No. 1500 (Speedy) left the turntable but disappeared once I got going on the track. Once in the platform came the realisation that I had to maintain steam pressure during the SPEECHES but all went well and the loco kept going for about 11/2 hr of running. Thereafter, I chilled out, chatting with a few members in the steaming bay while the loco cooled down. Then it was cleaning out time. By the time that was done and the loco was put to bed, everyone was packing up, so a quick bite to eat from my lunchbox and time to go home. Ray was asked to be guard, then, after a few laps he shared the driving of the Manor with its owner, Keith. I doubt I will ever make a top link driver - too short but the tankies are just the job, . Wonderful day.

chrisf
Good morning one and all There was morris dancing on the streets of Bedford yesterday, with local sides Hemlock and Red Cuthbert hosting several visiting sides and in the process providing a good and entertaining public spectacle. Earlier I went out for breakfast and did a brief tour of the shoe-shops to consider what is to be done with my boots. This is work in progress. In my absence from home Postie brought the working programme for Sidmouth FolkWeek. This sets off a process of agonising which has no place on a holiday, for the fiendish artistic director has arranged the bill of fare in such a way as to require patrons to be in up to four places at once if they are to catch all the artists they wish to see. Not for the first time I observe that if anyone does invent the Tardis that festival would test it to destruction. Today I am dripping with humidity as I type. Earlier rather than later I shall sit in a darkened room, for there are 13 screenings of the new Mamma Mia film at the multiplex. The last MM film, I thought, was so bad as to be funny so I shall see how the two compare. Warm thoughts to Andyram, Andy P, Robert, Simon, Debs, Tony and Aditi, Mal and all who are in distress or missing. Chris
RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted July 22, 2018 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 22, 2018 Where the heck's that groan button? Will we ever see it? As I recall, to qualify to read Engineering at University, both Maths AND English were required! Our school's exam board made it compulsory for pupils taking 3 science A levels to do a separate exam called Use of English, presumably to see if we could use a knife and fork or something similar. This was classed as an AO level. We also had to do a separate General Paper, probably called General Studies. These two were included on my A level certificate so West Yorkshire Police put me down as having 5 A levels. I never bothered to correct them but always claimed to only have passed 3. RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted July 22, 2018 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 22, 2018 Anyway, good morning all from a part of the Charente that is warming up nicely. I set of to spend the day doing electrical spaghettis wrangling but ended up putting another 12' of shelving up. I've now emptied another 5 boxes of books and sorted all my OS maps into neat stacks. That has cleared a lot of other shelves and now there seems to be space for all the layout bits. Order is gradually appearing in the shed. The book shelves are behind the layout so when visitors get bored looking at the fiddle yard, they can browse the shelves. I might even be able to start getting my workshop tools sorted soon, I just need to build a decent bench. Beth is off with a friend to a Broccante today. This is some sort of car boot sale. This gives me carte blanche to spend more time attempting to do some wiring, though I might show willing by doing some ironing first. Regards to all. Chrisf, enjoy the film, it's just had an excellent review by Mark Kermode on the beeb. Jamie
RhBBob
Morning all ! Early morning as SWMBO in pain all night - appointment still two weeks away. Moved the first one to a well-known motoring organisation and told the latter to s-d off. About 32 degs C by Wednesday, then ? Stay cool, please !
