Morning all

I hope that the last few days have been as relaxing and pleasant for you as various circumstances allow. You have my continued supportive thoughts though,  where they are needed.

Moving on. Has any one fathomed out how our esteemed utility companies calculate payments.  I can't.

They have recently read our meters (we are duel fuel from the same supplier) and completed our 'yearly review'.  They ended up repaying us £70.  Our predicted cost for next year, based on usage, is the same as last year,  They have put the monthly payment up by £20. How does that work?  Do they have price rises already planned?  I think I may well be contacting them to ask them to justify this.

Morningall,

We seem to be caught right on the edge of the band of snow crossing the country, I noticed how much was falling as I locked the house up before bed time and we woke up to a 'whiteout' which has already started thawing in places. News feed said the M1, A14 and A46 are closed in places which doesn't surprise me.

Watched a couple of episodes of 'UFO' late last night and suddenly wondered where the last forty seven years had disappeared too... If anyone knows where they are I'd like a few of them back please!

Jacket spuds are already in the oven...

Stay safe and warm folks ;)

It'll stop you getting bored. Never mind if I get round to firing up an ipanolog tonight I may need to ring you tomorrow to keep you awake.

Morning all from Estuary-Land. Best wishes to Debs and Rick, thinking of you. The snow has just started decending but as yet isn't settling, probably because the wind is moving it about too much for it to grab hold. When I visited my brother  yesterday I received my Christmas pressie from him, a copy of 'Mapping Britains lost branch lines' by Paul Appleby. Reading through it I spotted a real howler, in the item about the Hadleigh (Suffolk) branch there was a picture labeled Hadleigh Castle. I was not aware that Hadleigh in Suffolk ever had a castle and on studying the picture I realised that it was the Hadleigh Castle in Essex that was pictured. Thats it for now, be back later.

Hey up!

Watched a bit of cricket, now getting ready for a trip to town for some shopping.

As captain Oates said "I am just going outside and may be some time."...

Have a great day!

It's a bit nippy out there Baz, you had better wear your "big" coat. :secret:

Morning all. Welcome to a very wet, windy and generally miserable Hill of Strawberries.

Rose at 6 to help get SWMBO away to Bath and a stay with friends. Those of us who know, know that relying on early morning trains in bad weather after a two-day shut-down is not to be undertaken lightly. The computerised booking system does not know that and required her to be away at 07.38.

Persistent rain overnight here with little sign yet of the forecast snow but those early trains were in some disarray. She reached Reading via Twickers despite meteorological efforts to stop her then boarded the GWR train. “Lots of snow” was reported. She was then required to alight at Swindon owing not to snow but to flooded tracks. Currently she is still there hoping the next train will be allowed through. Her friends have driven up to Chippenham but nothing is moving through Thingley Junction though staff and the NR app are expecting the line to reopen about now

No news from the home front yet this morning but “unchanged” was the message I had late last night. Many thanks for all the supportive thoughts and comments. It really does make a difference to what might have been a lovely first Christmas back but wasn’t.

More later. Stay safe. Don’t eat yellow snow. Do take note of yellow warning of ice issued for all southern areas.

Not the first time that's happened. I seem to remember a delivery driver doing similar in some tv prog about a start-up venture specialising in fresh food; I guess it was less fresh by the time he'd arrived at the actual destination!

Still too cold to go outside and do anything in the garage. Not that I have an actual plan of what I would do given the chance. So, my muddling today will be looking at track plans from the comfort of an armchair.

Thoughts with Rick and Debs.

.....Not that I have an actual plan of what I would do ....

Exactly the same feeling that I'm currently having now that I'm in the office.... I think there were three Wills that I was on the point of completing when my senior colleague shut everything down in favour of the office Christmas party....

Must admit that I was always confused by the way these "plans" operated so I decided to come off my "plan" and moved to paying monthly according to the amount of gas or electricity actually used in the previous month.

This, of course, means that my bills during the winter period are much higher than the rest of the year but this is mitigated by receiving the Winter Fuel Allowance and not needing to pay Council Tax in February and March.

Shopping ...done.

Returned home as the late risers were starting to appear....

Jamie, we dont open the Club in Leeds between Christmas and New year..instead we have the AGM of the eating and drinking group. Tonight we are starting in Arcadia with a potential diversion to a head of steam both in Headingley.

Maybe I'm just being cynical, but I thought the only real plan is the one that the utility supplier has to extract as much money from its customers as possible, and the more complicated the system the better.

Slight changes to plans. I am coughing and have a high temperature. Being of an optimistic nature I assumed I would be well enough for the colonoscopy on Friday. Aditi made me ring the hospital who said I should not attend and would send a new appointment.

We haven't got any snow but have wintry showers at the moment.

Energy bills! We have a monthly debit scheme. The amount they set is designed to reduce the sum owed by the end of the billing year to zero, with any excess returned. It always seems a bit high to me. We got a substantial sum returned last time but the monthly cost went up a lot. Having had a new efficient boiler and a smart meter thst confirmed it really was using less gas, the nice lady at EON adjusted the debit downwards. Whenever we get bills we reminisce about the bedsit Aditi had in Ilford thst was so expensive to heat we found it cheaper to go out on the 25 bus to Oxford Street and wander round shops or walk to museums. Our first house had oil fired central heating that lasted until some international crisis made it cheaper to install a gas fired system.

Thought with Debs & Rick

Thoughts go out to Debs and Rick, not the best time of year for problems and concerns, but I don't think there ever IS a good time <sigh>

HUMP day, sort of, having taken the last two days off, it's not exactly the HUMP part of the week, I suppose that is really tomorrow this week - definitely confusing for us old folk.

Christmas and Boxing day "chez Abel" were both very enjoyable, mostly a relaxation, punctuated by plenty of eating and drinking.

Back to work today, NOT driving to the office though as I'm not going to even CONSIDER going outside until we get something in the way of warmer weather, and that may be more than a week away! :O

Yesterday and today BOTH sunny BUT -22 first thing, and only expecting -17 for a high today. In a bizarre reversal from the norm, since it's dead calm right now AND crystal clear and sunny, even thought the temperature is -22, the Realfeel is a weird -16, having ZERO wind and full sun actually CAN have a positive effect it seems :jester:

Tomorrow marginally warmer at -13 for the high but snow expected...

Enjoy whatever the day brings, if you can...

Just continuous wintry showers here that are forecast to stop later but turn to ice on untreated roads overnight.

I was told to be sensible and not take Robbie for a walk. He was quite soggy when he came back with Aditi. Not too sure how he got so muddy though. Matthew decided against going shopping today.

My cough/cold isn't getting better so I am glad Aditi suggested contacting the hospital to cancel Friday's appointment. It appears that both brother in laws who were at the Christmas Eve meal are also unwell so perhaps old man flu as none of the younger males seem affected.

I have managed to rattle off the three Wills.

Unfortunately, I have just remembered that there is supposed to be a fourth one; fortunately this client says there is no great hurry, as she needs to drag her husband in after the New Year so that he can do his.

71% Evening Awl,

We occasionally get offered dual fuel, then I ask how often their gas tanker will come around..

Our mobile home / model railway shed electricity supply runs up maybe £100 in a year, every year they try to put the monthly bill up to between £30 and £60 per month......

77%

After fitting interior LED lights to the landrover I returned to the battle with the main PC. It took two attempts at a CMOS bios clear but it worked. Since then I spent some time playing hunt the SSD in the Electronics / software. That was achieved around 14:00,

89% So we took Ben the Border Collie out for his major stroll as it was not raining, 1 mile from home we got bit by rain/ hail / sleet/ snow at 60 mph, a very unpleasant walk back even though I was wearing full winter sailing waterproofs.

After a late dinner, I've been back on the pc and found the SSD, so now I am partioning the main drive to get it small enough to put on the SSD (480Gb).

100% partition complete, time to press some more buttons...

Oh I got notification of my first pension payment today, a back payment to take me up to the date they will pay me properly. However it's also on emergency tax code until it's sorted. So the emergency payment won't buy me one carriage....

Snowed overnight, but not much. SWMBO's birthday today - a significant one - and she wanted to be taken to a specialist fabric shop in Brum, which has a lot more snow than we did. We came away with a small carrier bag, not even a quarter full - at eighty quid. Then I took her to a birthday lunch. Sainsbury's cafe ain't bad.

Then to son's (via flooded roads) to drop things off and home in time for the crunch pot ice under the tyres to be noticeable.

Now in. Outside a small suspicion, and ready to cook tonight.
