RE: "Sailing"

Still rate Gavin Sutherland's version better.  It should be - he wrote it.

.....

Agree that the Sutherland Bros version is better. One thing that puzzles me is that where Gavin is given credit for the song on Wikipedia and other websites, Iain is named on the inlay of their "Very best of" CD. I read some years back that Iain (or Gavin) was trying to play the traditional-styled "Mingulay Boat Song", played a few wrong chords, and finished up with "Sailing".

Here's Richard Thompson's version of "Mingulay" -

Good morning all,

Rather a disturbed night due mainly to torrential rain waking me about 2.30 and I've been awake off & on ever since so have now got up at stupid o'clock (for a Sunday)

Very overcast at the moment but hopefully it will be drier and brighter for the rest of the day although there could be more rain this afternoon.

Hope not as today is D(Didcot)-day and a fair part of the visit will be outside which reminds me that I should take a hat in case the sun shines.  One year I forgot and ended up with a burnt bonce and as I am currently free from injury to that part of my anatomy I want to keep it that way.

See some of you later and hope the rest of you have a good one,

Bob.

morning from a still quite warm Brussels. The city centre was the busiest I have ever seen it yesterday but then again we are not normally here in the Summer holiday time.

We still had a good time visiting some of our favourite bars including Delirium. Luckily the upper bar wasn't so busy as the lower ones. Oddly the Brewdog bar opposite Brussels Centraal station is now shut weekends.

This morning we head home on Eurostar then the dreaded journey form London home. This coming week (assuming that we haven't missed any change of plans whilst away) we have three days of guards strikes on Southern so even fewer trains than usual. very much Southern wind up trains!!

I was hoping to cut the lawn this afternoon but rain is forecast so we shall see.

Good morning one and all

I found what looks to be a suitable radio in Argos for £9.99 plus batteries.  On Monday I will test it.  HMRS on tour had an enjoyable few hours at Pendon yesterday.  One of the ladies on duty asked me if I go to Nettlebed folk club!  I’ve been to that village once and do not recall whether I visited the club or the festival but it was to see Strawhead, which makes it ages ago.  It is more likely that she has seen me at Sidmouth FolkWeek [but doing what, I wonder?].  I suggested that if she catches sight of me this year she should yell at me.  I wonder what she will yell?

I expect it will rain today.  This is because I have been invited to a garden party in Enfield.  Were I not so blessed I would have joined all and sundry on Castle’s tour of Didcot, which I am sure they will enjoy.  Hey, I can’t do everything, but it sure is fun trying.

Best wishes to those in distress and recovery

Chris

Morning all from the village that, despite 7 weeks of my absence, is still north of Ikea.    Yesterday we got into Portsmouth and saw a lot of grey painted ships of varying sizes and nationalities.  7 of the UK's 19 escort vessels were visible.  As someone remarked to me they would make a tempting target.   The George H W Bush was also swinging at anchor out on the Solent.   Then a good drive up and back home for 12.40.  A lot of tasks got completed and then we went to the outlaws for a very nice meal.  A good sleep and now I'm getting ready to head off to the Sandtoft Trolleybus gathering to man a bookstall.  The Tram Society are launching a new book today and the order database is on this laptop as I type.

I hope that the people that go enjoy Didcot. Also interesting that Nettlebed is mentioned. I once stayed a night in the vicarage there. Some remote family connection but I've never heard the place mentioned in the last 50 years.

Regards to all.

Morning all. A good nights sleep but unlike GDB I didn't hear the rain.

I've decided to let the train do all the work today with the amount of driving that I've been doing recently. Whether this is a good idea or not I'm sure I'll find out later.

Time for another coffee.

Have a good day everyone.

Morning, Awl, a night of light rain that started around 18:30 last night, then intermittent heavy rain during the night which when you have only a 1/4 inch of fiberglass and some pretty wooden cladding isn't enough to stop you being woken up. Then around 03:00 this morning Thor got very much upset, that certainly woke me up.

The below section will be my routine for the next week..

So I got up at about 04:30 for the morning necessaries, then took my motorboat from the club house to its moorings the other side of the river. Loaded the dory with its gear which was hiding in the cockpit out of the rain, so it started raining.

Then across to the club house turn the alarm off, get into the kitchen, turn the boiler and turn on the tea urn. Came out to find it had stopped raining.

Opened up, the shed and the fuel locker.

Loaded up the other Three dories with first aid kit, throwing line, fuel (top up fuel tanks if required carry to dories), paddles, boat hook, and a strange rolled up piece of equipment for hauling people out of the river with. Unlock the chains holding them all to the island. Just leaving them on mooring ropes.

Then back to the club house for a coffee and to type this.

End of early morning routine.

Today there is a church service at 10:30 to 11:00, then we go up to the broad for one race. Then lunch, then two more series races, and a special race or two.

After that I retrieve the buoys and lock them up in the pontoon shed.

Then return to my motorboat get that back to the clubhouse and get ready for the evening function.

Time to have another coffee before testing the dory engines.

Didcot...I spent some time watching out for Hoovers waiting for her indoors to return from work. I think I saw most of the class including the lined green Sir Edward Elgar..happy days!

It did rain over night and the sky is threatening, indeed it has now started to rain..gimmicks! Hopefully I get a phone call before I set off for Sheffield.

Enjoy your day...Pete - hope the house move is progressing well.

Nettlebed rings a big bell in my memory but I can't remember why!

Morning all from Estuary-Land. A quick hello this morning as I'm off out to a toy fair. There was indeed quite heavy rain last night and it woke me a couple of times but I was soon back in the world of nod. Bye for now, be back later.

Just arrived back from the lock up garage we have down the street. I have finally been allowed out to do more to our 1968 Morris Minor. That poor car has languished in it's prison for quite some time.  In between operations I have sneaked out to wind the engine over with the starting handle just to move oil around about once a month. The car is well covered with a large plastic sheet which I fold back enough to allow me to lift the bonnet. A couple of weeks ago I removed this sheet altogether to reveal the windscreen and the tax disc. Much shocked to see it was for 2001, I never realised the car had been in there that long. As far as I can see it needs two quarter floor panels and various other repair bits and pieces. Some time ago a friend helped me fit a battery and after testing the lights etc, we went for start up. After several coughs and pops it did so but we quickly stopped because of the fumes.

More details from time to time but so much cause this to be sent to the "love old cars" postings.

Morning all.

Today will be taken at home.  We are impacted by the wholesale road closures caused by a certain cycling event and which also means our local buses, such as they are, are unable to run.  I am tasked with assembling a home-made bookcase which seems to have fewer screws than it should and more warpage of wood than is ideal.  I don't like my chances.

Afternoon all.

The above was submitted many hours ago but somehow failed to post and was found on the screen when I returned to the computer just now.  The bookcase job has been abandoned.  The afternoon ticks on towards roast lamb and a nice glass or two of merlot.

Best wishes to all.
