End of the economy drive? Back in 1994 when our office at Swindon was closing down I saved (quite legitimately as it happens ) several packets of coloured printer paper from the skip - I have just used the final four sheets of the green paper, which had been the final survivor of the various colours I rescued. Is this a record I wonder?

I needed a bit of squared tracing paper recently. Found a roll end in my den which came from the skip when we cleared out our office in Stanier House during the upgrade for the Regional HQ move in 1985. I've still got a clutch pencil in use that a rep gave me in the 1970s. German-made, none of this Poundland rubbish.

A cry often heard at model railway exhibitions too.

Yes we had that a few years back when trying to run a DCC layout on a laptop with Railmaster. The laptop seemed to be affected by the wireless signal in the venue and just wouldn't boot up correctly. It needed a good deal of attention to get it working OK. Fortunately we had a spare laptop so the day was not a disaster.

We have a previously mentioned work bench we got from the company, about 1992 that has yet to be used by us, it will be a model railway workbench some time in the next couple of years.

 

Part of an old sliding door dating from pre 1995 when rescued that became the opening door to the model railway shed a couple of years ago.

 

I have a Kestrel dinghy mast not used for the last 15 years that is 40+ years old and hopefully will be incorporated into a new ( different type) dinghy this or next year.

 

I also have a sheet of 8x4 1/2 inch thick plastic rescued from a radar test window, that I've had twenty years but is 40+ years old, mind you I've cut various bits out. There's bits in the landrover, a boat and small bits in a model railway.

 

Our paper stocks can be 20+ years old but we do, when we want any, buy it in bulk...

 

The oddest rescue? The aluminium inner to an ambulance roller blind, that became the tiller extension to a dinghy....

Another sunny day here and warm, too, at 9am - must be around 20C now. Expecting rain hereabouts tomorrow - Edinburgh was named the driest place in the UK for April but shouldn't have to worry aboot a droot for a while yet, the Borders has been having some April rain.

Yes remember looking in the window of that store. Some really nice models but the prices weren't to my wallets liking even back ten years ago.

 

That was when it was at the back of a souvenir shop.

 

A few years ago, the souvenir side was sold and the model railway shop moved to the first floor of the building behind the shop!

The French group that Aditi attends has been asked if they would be willing to help out the local tractor factory. Some French chaps will be attending some event there. Their wives are having a day in London and they are looking for someone to guide them through any language difficulty. I think Aditi may get the job being one of the younger more mobile group members.

"A visit to the tractor factory" does sound like a Soviet propaganda film title.

Hello again from Estuary-Land. Got the guys doing the neighbours drive to tidy up some of the paviors on my front path that were begining to sag for the price of a couple of pints. There is a few things that I have acquired after they have been disposed of at work, top of the list is a full size solid oak table. The reason it was being thrown out was that it was used to hold vases of flowers and when the vases were replenished water was often spilt. This resulted in the black water stains going deep into the grain. I acquired it about twenty years ago, and being kept in a centrally heated house those stains are now barely discernable. Just as well I didn't convert it into a workbench as intended. Another odd pair of items is two 7lb weights, one a 'flat iron' and the other a 'pyramid and ring' shape. These were discovered in the back of a storeroom that was being cleared out, I was told I could keep them if I wanted.

FMEA.. one of the most boring meetings I ever attended was a FMEA one lead by an Mod "expert" who was not in the same space time continuum as everyone else..... almost as sleep inducing as our "Sociology" lectures as art of my Engineering degree.

I got an old desk (teachers) when I worked at the school. Complete with inlet brass inkwell holder, ink stains, tea and coffee cup rings, staples etc. I stripped it down, cut the legs and waxed it. We have it as a coffee table and I bought an old inkwell to put in the holder.

Slightly different, when in the MN we docked in Piraeus and a mate and I went to watch an Olympiakos match. After the match I pulled the Greek flag down (military junta period) and still have it.

Evening all. A quick check in before bed. Generic greetings today as i have only succeeded in skim reading much of the unread posts. Today I spent my planning time visiting the other school about the deputy head's position. What a lovely school. I really liked the place so I will be endeavouring to complete the application in the next couple of days. Fingers crossed!

The weather has been absolutely glorious today, Sheila reckons that I've caught the sun today too.

 

On the subject of acquisitions, I've had quite a few things that I've rescued from being thrown away over the years.

 

The bench vice I gave on my workbench, lots of dexion shelving, furnace bricks have all been bought for pennies when I worked at British Steel. At the time they were not allowed to give anything away, so they only charged peanuts for items that were regarded as scrap.

 

From my current employer, during various office closures, I've also acquired several sheets of perspex, vero board, plus many boxes of resistors, capacitors, diodes, several small motors and gearboxes, from when they were emptying a stores, have found there way into my workshop, I've even had a few small (panel size) transformers, I'm still coming across stuff that I'd forgotten I'd got. I've also been able to obtain quite a lot of specialist hand tools, such as taps, dies, drills plus tap and die wrenches, micrometers, callipers the list goes on. However, the tool I use the most that I rescued is my soldering station. An Antex variable temperature model complete with 25W and 50W irons, I got that when they shut our repair workshop.
