Good morning all, from the chilly wastes of Carshalton-sur-Mer, where a brightening sky portends the promise of another sunny but cool day. Much to do today, including an important decision to be made before ten, and some emails in French to compose. Do I want to be a director of an educational supply company? I'm thinking not...

Other news to follow, have a good day, all, be lucky.

Good morning everyone.

Another morning in the orifice awaits, but hopefully, like yesterday I'll make my escape early, as the departmental 'head' (and the rest of him also) is up from Warwick and my manager does not want him to see anyone sitting around doing nothing!

The sun is now up enough for me to see the frost on the roof of my workshop, so I will have to defrost the car before making my way North up the M61 again.

Back later.

Morning Awl,

After yesterdays news about acrylamides, I went and put 2 crumpets in the toaster, longest setting, and then put them in again for a second crisping, Crumpets have to be crispy before lots of butter...

The first ten miles of the journey to work was fine, then as I reached the road parallel to the river, the fog got heavy, and for the rest of the way even in Norwich the visibility was between 100 Yards and 30 yards. Luckily no wombles or animals of any kind were found on the journey.

The Airport outside the building is notably quiet, which suggests they are shut till further notice, the airport weather station is reporting 200m visability with freezing fog.

It's definately not freezing inside the main building, the cause of the rewiring of our electrical rooms was new air conditioning, which has several zones. The old AC was building wide, so that is still running, while each new system is comissioned and they are fighting each other at the moment...  So it's 27C outside my lab at the moment while my lab is still 22.725C (The spec being 23+-0.5C). It should sit slightly low, so when I suddenly power up to 120Amp current shunts it doesn't push the temperature too high.

Though at the moment I'm only runnning 100uA, and only up to 10A today.

Morning all from the village that remains north of Ikea.  Do we need parliamentary approval to move it, perhaps I'll find out later.    Anyway the boss has got safely to her Warners holiday and the house belongs to the cats as usual with just me as their obedient servant. Yesterday I managed to put up darling daughter's knife rack. This was achieved without injury to either myself or any of the knives.  We then had a very good talk at the clubrooms about the history of one of our local stations.

The dining room now contains a baseboard with Greyhound Bridge on it, hopefully I will be able to do much work on it today. Other model railway tasks are also planned.   I just have to make sure that there is no trace of them by mid morning on Friday.

Chrisf, I'm glad that things seem to be working out with the car.

Dick, have fun with your emails, I need to write  a letter to my French bank manager to set up a railway related subscription.  My spoken French is OK but my written work is still at the stage commented on 40 years ago in my school reports.

Regards to all.

Jamie

Morning all.

Having installed a new energy efficient boiler last summer the difference is quite interesting. The waste heat used to warm the downstairs cloakroom which is now significantly cooler. Also the air temperature coming out of the outside vent used to be very hot (my mind was toying with heating the greenhouse with it).

Yesterday the water vapour in the exhaust gas had frozen on the protective grill and formed icicles.

Got an extra layer on today as I'm headed over to East Anglia for a hospital appointment. Not poorly, just putting my oar in.

Have a nice day everyone. Andy

Exactly as we found our new boiler about 5 years ago, unfortunately, the boiler is in the kitchen so we've lost the spare heat keeping the kitchen warm.

Be careful in the fog on your way....

Bright(ish) day with some fog in the valley here in sunny Teignmouth.

Good journey wishes to Ian back to Le Sarthe, it doesnt sound too warm there.

Think the Smartie tube is best suited to a 4-8-8-4.

Nothing from Ian Abel. Hope the spat hasnt stopped him posting.

He's just informing us that he likes a particular dish, the progress of a named tennis player on a tournament Down Under, he's expecting something he ordered earlier, he takes his wife shopping later today and expresses his hopes for improving weather. That's all

You shouldn't be reading so much of those l8 nite spy novel stuff, it makes you suspicious ;)

:jester:

Very funny. I thought we'd just agreed on no politics in this thread.

And I'd appreciate not being patronised, thanks.

....it's called Trainspotting because of an incident in the book when they went into the long-closed Leith Central station (now a Tesco) to score some heroin and a tramp asked them if they were "trainspottin'".....

I thought the word referred to looking for a free spot amongst the tell-tale tracks in the veins which were evidence of "shooting up".

What used to be the rear station yard at Teignmouth is now a small business park with 6 or so units. The permitted rear entrance/exit from the station passes through the railway gated fence and then across the access to the units. In all it is about 100 metres from the lighted station rear to the road. At night there is no lighting. Any suggestions as to whose responsibilty it may be?

I guess it isnt Network Rail although they need to use this piece of land to access the station.

Morning all from Estuary-Land. Bright and sunny this morning but cold, when I went to take the milk in this morning I put it in the fridge to warm up. Smiffy, please keep posting, we want to know what the welkmen are up too. There was a thread re. Trump, Brexit et al that went on for quite some time as most people were polite but it degenerated into the (inevitable?) 'whose got the biggest willy match' and it was shut down by the mods.

Morning all.

Chris, is your Polo at a VW approved body shop? There may be warranty issues if not. Have they found the miscreant yet?

Ed

As with my car accident last year the insurance companies just hand things over to the specialist all-in-one companies that do the repairs, car hire and in my case collected and delivered my car and the hire car. Seeing as most if not all of these companies are household names there shouldn't be any problems. Chris, I would suggest asking if your own car could be returned to your door, in my case they took my car to Enfield on the back of a lorry and returned it the same way.

Evening all. Well....that did not take long. Could that be a new record? Boss returned at lunch time from the exchange visit, left about 4pm and by 4.30 I had received another email criticism. Why had I not completely rebranded the reading scheme during his week away. Hmmm. The last time I did it - the job was so big it took me three weeks of solid work whilst a student teacher was in charge of my class. A bit difficult to complete another overhaul when teaching the class whilst dealing with unhelpful members of staff.

Now then....I wonder if I could afford that 4 day a week job, or I wonder if anything else is out there. Cross is not the word - apcolyptic would be nearer the mark. I feel pleased that I composed a polite reply.

To put it simply he's a bully. I had to deal with similar people as a union rep, the best way I found to deal with such people was to present them with a copy of our employers anti bullying policy highlighting the part about instant dismissal. In most cases it worked, one manager though just moved on to his next victim, that turned out to be his last as that manager was hauled before the bosses and was sacked. I would suggest re-joining your union and taking your case to them.

Smiffy, the fact that Lightengine decided to remind us, in a clever way, of the important Supreme Courts future decision, is not politics, as it is a factual statement of the actions of a non political organisations decision. Also as a point of law that has now been decided, that in itself is not politics.

However any discussions on what the politicians decide to do with that decision, or how it affect the beliefs of people here and in the outer world would be politics.

Nope. It was an attempt to be ever so clever (and not managing it) and get around what we'd all agreed. I see that you liked his post. Other people didn't. As for me, I think I'm out of here.

I note that Bernie Ecclebum has been sidelined by the new owners of Formula 1, after about 40 years at the helm. There will be many a dry eye worldwide among racefans at that news!

Hope your travel plans pan out OK!

F1. I just hope we don’t look back on the “Ecclebum” years as the “Golden Years”..................

Best, Pete.

Come on guys - don't lets come to blows over this.  Nobody needs to leave.

We all know the rules, but sometimes it is hard to stay completely silent - particularly for those of us directly affected, who don't know where we stand.  This is after all, one of the biggest issues facing the UK for years.

Having said that, politics is banned on RMweb for good reason!

Spats and falling outs are one of the reasons that discussions of matters polly-tickle are supposed to be outside the included items on this section of the forum - I shall be very sorry to see Smiffy depart - the on-going saga of the whelk-men will be no more, and the disappearance of Debs is a cause for great regret also - therefore,  in an attempt to change the mood completely, I offer you this item found on Railroad Line Forum this morning - in my opinion very cleverly done

Mawnin' awl. Chilly outside, still, and I understand freezing rain caused disruptions in various places during the earlier hours. We shall see how things look later when I'm off to work.

May I just second all of what you wrote, Robert, including my sympathies for everyone affected and finding it difficult to keep it all in. I, too, would hate to see discord raise its ugly head in here, however, so I definitely hope things can be resolved amongst our numbers.

Enjoy what you're up to, and sending best wishes to everyone under the weather. Also to Debs and everyone else currently absent...
