emt_911
We might visit the Tank Museum when we have our pre cruise break in Southampton. I can remember Dad always saying each year we would go to the museum. We never did. Tony Although I've spent many years on holiday in the area, I've never been either. I am going to rectify this at the end of next week though
Popular Post iL Dottore
Morning All, I haven't done much with RMWeb as of late, mainly because I've been feeling rather dispirited as the job that seemed to be "in the basket" has been postponed to "at least the start of 2017" for "business and budget reasons". Nonetheless, I have been pressing ahead with my modelling (a November 11 deadline approaches), finished the brick chimney, cleaned it up (the which activity burnt out one of my mini-drills that I was using with a cleaning brush) and I am now getting ready to grab my dental instruments and inscribe stonework on the stone chimney that has been clad in DAS, sanded down and cleaned up ready for finishing. I must either be a] naive or b] an innocent or c] totally oblivious, as I seem to miss all those wonderful "toys from pram" moments on RMWeb that others on this thread speak about. So, heeding comments by The Stationmaster I toddled over to the B12 thread and had a shufti. To be honest, I found many of the comments to be - as they say here - übertrieben! One comment left me flabbergasted: the poster wrote, just after a post with a close up of the wheels "...Oh dear! I will not be purchasing based on that. If the wheels are correct with the flares then I will purchase...." Isn't there something rather absurd about griping about (slightly) incorrect wheels on a mass produced OO gauge model which - by it's very nature - has the wheels far too close together (OO). Ignoring for the moment that the finish on current RTR models is beyond most modellers ability to copy, surely if someone is so dedicated to ensuring the correct wheels are installed they would be modelling to a more accurate track standard and thus be replacing the wheels sets anyway? Very early on in my modelling endeavours, I came across a post (not on RMWeb) by someone who decreed that a minor feature on an otherwise acceptable RTR model was wrong (something too big/in the wrong place/wrong curvature, I don't recall). The poster "corrected" the perceived error and repainted the model... to such a poor standard that the model looked like it had been grouted, not painted. Yet this was put forward as an "improvement".... Sheesh! What a putz (as our American friends would say). This little vignette taught me that unless I am confident that I make a minor alteration to the same or better standard than the original finish quality, I'll live with minor errors. I guess that there are many (too many???) modellers who seem to be unaware of the limitations of mass produced, injection plastic moulding, model production and of the market for RTR models (which, I understand, is primarily made up of people who want to see the trains move and aren't particularly bothered by minor inaccuracies and have minimal in depth knowledge of railway details) and want perfection straight out of the box. Somehow I don't think that a volume RTR producer would be too keen to increase costs by going for an accuracy the majority of purchasers won't notice (I am thinking here of the various plank wagons and their "one-size-fits-all" underframes). Of course it would be nice to have RTR models made of mixed media so that the advantages of each material type could be exploited for maximum accuracy (such as brass for prototypically thin smoke deflectors, plastic for intricately detailed backheads, etc) but then we'd end up paying a hell of a lot more for our RTR (which would probably make many of those who decry inaccurate wheelsets, complain about the cost.....). Ahem. Sorry, I seem to have strayed into railway modelling territory. I can only hope that I can avoid the "Wrath Of DebsTM" (and it's good to see her posting again). I see that Christmas has made a typically early appearance on this thread (and only 66 more shopping days to Christmas day). Mrs iD, the Wolfpack and I (in reluctant tow) head off to the Holiday Hovel for the Christmas period, now that the in-laws are deceased. And whilst I may share some of Trisonic's dislike of "long dark boring days", I'd much rather pleasantly spend such days with a good book and a glass of single malt in the Holiday Hovel than struggle into work and/or succumb to the shopping feeding frenzy that afflicts a lot of America (and now is spreading to many parts of the world as well). It's not even November and already Christmas cards, advent calendars and the like are on sale around here. Should the impossible happen and I become Supreme Ruler of EarthTM, one of the things that I would decree is that NO Christmas related items/decorations/offers/shopping shall appear before December 1st (and I'd place similar restrictions on Easter "celebrations"). Well that's enough of my bizarre ramblings, I'm off to play "mad dog" with Schotty and get the mutts ready for their midday stroll. RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted October 20, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 20, 2016 Morning all from Estuary-Land. Quite bright this morning if a bit nippy. Sorting out the contents of the shed today into four piles, back in to shed, into garage, charity shop and tip, the last one of those is the smallest somehow. Problem is as well that a lot of stuff won't be able to go back in the shed until the dry lining has been done. The builder is coming today so I will talk to him about further work I would like to have done, and most importantly what it will cost. Thats it for now, be back later.
RMweb Gold Happy Hippo Posted October 20, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 20, 2016 Does anyone know of any sports-type bottle holders big enough to hold a bottle of wine or a 70cl bottle of Bombay Sapphire gin? The plan is to attach it to a saddle or neckstrap when riding out on Sunday..... Buy yourself a Platypus hydrater system. Then empty the bottle into such and top off with tonic and Ederflower cordial.....Plus ice. Will keep your back cool and slake your thirst.
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted October 20, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 20, 2016 Morning all, Smashing stuff there iD, the chap going barmy about the flared spokes had me rolling about in laughter and wondering about his taste in trousers. Coincidentally we placed the Christmas order with the butcher earlier this week and oddly the 'largest chicken' they offer has shrunk from 10lbs to 'about 6 lbs' with apparent complete innocence of the knowledge that they sold us a 10lb one last year. However this is a blessing in disguise because as long as the cats get their share it means we bipeds won't be going through an extended period of chicken sandwiches, curried chicken and chicken soup (the only homemade soup I don't like - too thin for my taste. In this household decorations do not appear until the weekend before Christmas and remain until 12th Night and the joy of giving and receiving presents is still savoured especially as it usually means new books to read and absorb. The one thing I do miss about the Christmas period is the long past annual visit to Swindon shed and works on the first Sunday after Christmas - unless the snow prevented getting there as in the 1962/63 winter. In the meanwhile the sun has just appeared between the clouds, herself will do the Waitrose shop locally (or try to - why the heck our Prime Minister uses this branch of Waitrose I don't know although maybe she has found a better one since her promotion) and i shall then collect her from the car park without having to actually try and park there. Have a good day one & all.

Take Care iD You slightly misunderstood me, Flavio. I want everyone else to go to work so I can get on with what I like best - namely not having to put up with interminable family visits etc, etc. Long dark days partially solved by moving here as there is still some daylight at 5:00pm on the shortest day, otherwise I quite enjoy Winter (we still get seasons here) as it is cold and dry with scattered blizzards. Snow is fine so long as one is equipped to deal with it. Best, Pete.
RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted October 20, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 20, 2016 Neil, you lucky sod! [edit: to get her to relax, try a massage. Bottom of the feet is particularly effective, if done right. Make sure you start from the top though! It always worked on my gf's ] Could I just point out that Charlie is my adopted daughter, not wife or girlfriend! I think Gareth, her hubby, might have something to say if I started massaging her feet, never mind Mrs NHN of 32 years!

Have a good day one & all. Has Mrs SM just had a promotion? As to refilling a back pack. When Beth was in hospital long term at one point she like me to take in Apple juice for her. One day I forgot to get any at our normal shop and stopped at a convenience store that sold the stuff in clear glass bottles. The colour looked like another drink that Beth liked and it held 70cl. I then used to refill the bottle with white wine whenever it was empty. This was fine until one night the nurse offered to pour some juice to help her take her tablets. It cost Beth a glass later that night. Jamie Edited October 20, 2016 by jamie92208

RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 20, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 20, 2016 (edited) He may have had the opportunity to shout at my father! Bovington is well worth a visit. Not only did I get the chance to sit in a Chieftan, outside is a memorial to all personnel from the Armoured Corp who have been killed in action since 1945. One of the names on there was a schoolfriend of my wife and her brother who got killed in Northern Ireland, whilst serving with a specialist detachment. However his parent regiment was the 17th/21st Lancers. The staff are excellent. Jamie Edited October 20, 2016 by jamie92208
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted October 20, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 20, 2016 Just walked past the kings Arms (if thats the one Baz was going to) and a group of people in there but couldnt make out if Baz was one of them from his avatar, on my way back from Sainsburys to the office. I went to the Bovington museum when I was very young so dont remember much about it. My father was in the army working on tanks when he was conscripted many years ago and just left when the Suez crisis kicked off. Half way through the day. Awaiting an Amazon package so hopefully it will arrive before I leave to do battle with strike day 3. drivers to be ballotted in the next few weeks so we may well have further problems leading up to xmas.

Ohmisterporter
With my 70th birthday next month I have to renew my old paper driving licence with a new photo ID card so went into town yesterday to have my picture taken. I couldn't remember where there was a photo booth so I called in at Max Spielman's to check their photo service. Cost was £9.99 for six photos; I pointed out that I only wanted one but that is not an option. I said I would think about it and headed to the main post office in town where I had been told there was a booth. When I was inside it looking for the instructions a PO employee told me it was not yet working following their recent move, so I asked him the cost anyway, £21.50. This turned out to be £4.50 for the photo plus £17 DVLA fee, for this the picture is taken and the form is completed and sent off to the DVLA. I was uneasy about this because the DVLA form that I have states that there is no fee for changing licences. I opted to go back to Max Spielman's and got six photos plus a hard copy. I will send the forms off later today. Has anyone else replaced or renewed their driving licence and paid £17.00 to the DVLA for doing so? As a side, for anyone looking for the main Post Office in Lancaster it has closed on Fenton Street and moved to upstairs in WHS. Stay safe all.
