Ian Abel
Ian A - You say that you have 3 weekend days to get the train room presentable, but, you've obviousely forgotten that Mrs A will have jobs around the house prior to the visitors arriving. Exactly, what could POSSIBLY go wrong with this plan. If we factor in that the new kitchen sink and granite counter, PLUS new kitchen window and backsplash are all being installed next week while I'm gone, I'm sure there'll be NOTHING else to do that I've not accounted for

RMweb Gold PeterBB Posted March 16, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 16, 2016 Evening folks, I must say that I've been truly amazed and humbled by the number of 'friendly/ suportives I see each time I've logged on over the last couple of days, thanks to all for your good wishes. As for The Watermill place I linked to for AndyB, I somehow knew that decent B&B, microbrewery dog friendly and, though nobody's mentioned it yet, a huge malt whiskey (or is it whisky?) Selection - can't stand the stuff miself, might be well received in these parts Anyway, g'night all see yer tomorra. Edit, to remove superfluous word! So many pages so quickly. Andy, have worked out at last that you are post op and recovering well - great. Andy, Have at last worked out that you are post op for quite a big op and are recovering well - hope it continues for you and for everyone else posted, cheers, Peter
emt_911
I could be in trouble. This evening I started writing the document for the survey that I started today. /it's already 11 pages and there's still just over 2 weeks to go. Off to Southampton first thing for a minor job with an on site time of 07:30 before returning to the survey. Night all.
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted March 16, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 16, 2016 Another early (by my standards) start tomorrow and - in order to get to Ally Pally by the appointed time on Saturday (08.24 train from here) - another one on Saturday. Tomorrow's is not the nicest of days as it's for the funeral, at Swindon Crem, of a former colleague; Saturday will hopefully be a much nicer event although not helped by TfL's efforts to close a substantial part of the UndergrounD network. G'night all.

RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted March 16, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 16, 2016 (edited) Evening everyone. The day started out grey and cloudy but picked up later, by lunch time the sun was out and it was a very pleasant day. I didn't have to wait too long in the factory car park in Liverpool, after handing in my phone, iPad and camera I went back to the car to have a read. I've always got a magazine with me, you never know when you'll need one! About 10:30 I got a knock on the window from the security guard saying that my escort will be here in 5 minutes. Once he turned up, it was a quick drive round to the gas installation, 10 minutes on site and that was me done for the day. Home early for lunch no less (but I'd better not tel my boss), well it makes up for the 2 late finishes that I've had this week. So far this week I've clocked up over 500 miles and it's only Wednesday. I've got 2 more days where I'll clock up plenty 100+ miles with each, so I expect to hit the 750 - 800 mark this week! Whilst I was in Liverpool (the Speke area) I thought I'd call in at Hatton's new shop, well it was only a small detour (less than 1/2 mile). They only have a small temporary shop open, but I was very restrained and purchased just a new pair of flat jaw pliers and 2 bottles of super glue. Taxi services were required tonight to take Sheila to Zumba, I don't mind as the church hall where the class takes place can get quite dark at night as there are no street lights at the back of the church. An hour later I returned to collect her, we then went on to complete the Sainsbury's Grand Prix. A real fun packed evening. Off to bed now. Goodnight all Edit. Polly sorry to hear about your Mum, deepest condolences. Edited March 16, 2016 by BSW01
andyram
Evening all. Best wishes to all those battling health issues. Good to see Andy (leopard) active and posting (even if he is giving me some light hearted abuse on another thread). I genuinely hope that the pain is easing. Dave TG - another great set of images. I recognise the large industrial tower in the distance on some of your shots. I was not fully aware that the section from Leekbrook had been lifted and thought the Churnet Valley Railway still ran specials over it. They certainly were advertising some off branch line jaunts at their recent gala event. Hope all had a good day. Mine has been mixed to say the least. Another good day with the children at school - very productive. A meeting with a parent went well and I appeased another one too. A late meeting at another school ended early which was a bonus. It was quite productive too. One slight issue was the presence of the troublesome ex staff member, who is now working elsewhere. Interestingly, and unsurprisingly, my colleague and I got ignored! The student has settled in well. She is considering applying for the post that becomes vacant for September. The only problem is that the closing date is Sunday so she does not really have time to get to know us, or us her. Hopefully, if unsuccessful, it will not adversely affect her placement. The downside of the day - I have been called to court as a witness to the crime I reported the other month. Not quite what I needed. Enjoy tomorrow. Edited to add my condolences to Polly. Thoughts are with you. Edited March 16, 2016 by andyram

Jock67B
Evening all, Regret I fell asleep in the special hospital chair that I've been supplied this evening, and also felt fairly nauseous, so passed on dinner - nonetheless, I see the oncologist in the morning and it will be interesting to see what changes he decided to make! The ladies who remove and change my neck/head support collar have told me to get to the General Hospital early, and simply knock on their door and they will get me turned round in plenty of time for my oncology. All so very helpful! I tried lurking a bit earlier but with the several visits/meetings I needed, I have fallen two or three pages behind which I'll try to catch up later tomorrow. Joanna is going to drive me as it is much more comfortable than awaiting hospital transport. I made a decision that affects the Glasgow & South Western Railway Association earlier in the day - I was charged with the disposal of the railway related items in my father's will and so got a best bid on a flimsy driver's journey log sheet for a Glasgow to Carlisle and return journey dated 1872, and topped up the bid with my own money. The prompt for this came from a certain Mr Irvine who described in 'The Railway Magazine' a similar journey on board a Rebuilt Scot in 1957 which is quite possibly a record journey, and I shall write a short article for the association, making sure that Jock senior gets a mention in the Association archive. I will also mention that 'The Railway Magazine' kindly granted me permission to use any of the information in the article, and is still going after these years! The later journey took two hours less than the early one which is quite amazing. Not sure how it will work, but looking forward to the research in any case. Commiserations/Congratulations as necessary, and I will try to catch up later tomorrow, hoping I haven't missed anything tumultuous so far, Kind regards, Jock. G'night Pete! G'night other sleepy heads!q

RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted March 17, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 17, 2016 Didnt we used to have a question mark icon? We did. And a disagree button. Both were removed after protests from some members (including some with established reputations of excellence) as it generated black marks which could be misinterpreted as a member who posted bumfluff Just popped in to let you know Mum passed away in her sleep last night. So many mixed up feelings at the moment My condolences Polly. These things are never easy whether or not they were expected. Mixed feelings and wayward emotions are perfectly normal. Please be assured of support here and feel free to PM me if you wish. All the best to you. In other news : It's St. Paddy's Day. For reasons clouded in the mists of time Australia seems to have adopted this as National Dress-In-Green-And-Get-Drunk Day. There's a significant Irish population here many of who are descended from the original free settlers. The Irish built our railways to their 5' 3" gauge for which most of us have never forgiven them. We have three main gauges which makes a national rail network near-impossible to achieve. Even our passenger trains are divided between Paddy-Gauge and Stephenson's Standard. The city will be filled with revelling "Irish" tonight many of whom have no connection to the fair Isle. It always strikes me as faintly ridiculous to see groups of Chinese students dressed head to toe in green, sporting tall hats and wondering what they are supposed to do. On the other hand all those female backpackers (of whom there are currently a great many in town) who sport "Kiss Me I'm Irish" T-shirts might indeed just get that lucky tonight. Provided Sir Topham Hatt isn't watching me It's also the seventh anniversary of the loss of a dear friend from back home. We grew up, drank, laughed and did other interesting things together for years. At the tender age of 28 she passed away in her sleep from a seizure while boyfriend was out for the night fishing. She left a six year old son who couldn't wake her up and was apparently severely traumatised by the time daddy came home. She is survived by her twin sister who I am in constant contact with and whom I shall phone tonight (her morning) out of respect, care and support. Come June when I'm back home I shall place my usual floral tribute on her resting place in the sand dunes above Hayle. Enjoy today. None of us knows how many mornings we have left to rise - early or otherwise.
