Morning All, Taking all day to decide what to do? Nothing like my world, I've spent 26 years at it and then some other b*gger made the decision for me! Still no oktas in sight and I have tomorrow and Friday off work as well. Tough life.

Rained heavily overnight, but today's forecast is overcast, but no rain.

Work continues. I really have no idea when I'll finish.

Besides the jobS (multi-tasking) I am currently working on there's still another to investigate and do.

It is nice to be back! The server still seems to be running a tad slow, but maybe the valves haven't fully warmed up yet. A big thank you to Andy and the whole team for getting us back online.

 

Nice to see that you are still around Don. Long may it last!

 

Sunrise around here is getting later now that the Winter is fast approaching. I am back to getting up in the dark (05:30), and it generally gets light as I am driving to work (06:00-06:30). The weather is pretty clear this morning, and it looks like it is going to be quite a nice late Summer day.

 

I haven't been totally idle while RMweb was away. I have been sorting out some layout doodles that I did a while ago, and so I will probably post them in the planning section later on. Nothing to get too excited about because I am no artist, but it is an idea that I have been kicking around for a while.

I worked in IT, and the first sign that anyone had been made redundant was that all their access privileges suddenly disappeared, at exactly the same time as a manager and a security person appeared at their desk to escort them off the premises!

I can confirm that not only is light here now but it is quite sunny. I'm off to the bank later to give them some money. Dominick's blood test reminded me that I should book one (at the doctors not the bank) , I'm supposed to have them monthly but I usually stretch the interval between tests a bit.

First and foremost, the stories about Don's imminent departure seem not to have come to pass. It might be a bit like the department store in Oxford Street (It was Bourne & Hollingsworth ISTR) whose closing down sale was so sucessful that they went back into profit and kept going and going.

 

Now then, we're back on the air, so that's great, but we do seem to be a bit slow at the moment - I wonder if there's enough mice running on the treadwheels. Thanks to Andy andthe team for getting this done, and keeping us informed via twitter.

 

Had a pretty rotten day yesterday trying to fathom out how to organise an ambulance to get me to the trauma clinic on Friday - when I was on the ward, I was told that I was entitled to this as my injury restricts my mobility - so naturally, I thought all I needed to do was to call the ambuance team at the hospital and tell them my name and address and hospital number, so that I could book. No - they gave me another number in Preston, who said they were just an advice line, and to call a number in Blackpool. I called the number, and explained, and they asked for my GP's transport reference - I told them I didn't have that, as I had been referred for transport by the specialist/ward. No dice, I needed a GP reference, so I had to try to get through to my GP (20 minutes of engaged tones first) to get the all important number - called back with the detail, to be told they couldn't meet the appointment time, and to call the outpatients department to get the appointment changed. Again, easier said than done, as that too was permanently engaged. The ehole process took upwards of two hours - well at least I didn't have RM Web to distract me.

 

Today I start to prepare for winter, as I have booked the chimney sweep, a couple of hundred kilos of coal, and a couple if cubic metres of logs, all to be done today - we shall see.

 

Last night, Mr Branson's hot air balloon took off from a field near our house, and I saw it off to about 500 feet - then Mrs 45156 took a look and called to me that I should have a look as it was coming down - indeed, it was at about 100 feet and dropping with the burner going like stink - I would not like to have been a passenger on that flight, as it appeared to come down no more than a mile from the launch site. We didn't hear any emergency vehicles, so I guess they got down OK.

 

I'll check back later as the sweep's just arrived.

Morning All, We're back it seems. Today is a work day which seems to involve going through a bunch of mandatory education and annual recertification on intellectual property and data security matters. Only been doing this job for 26 years so clearly this is the most important thing I should be doing! Really there are more important things to do like making a list of all the things I've forgotten to pack for my trip with trainset to deepest darkest Cornwall tomorrow.

Sounds like there are quite a few downdrafts in your area Stewart!

I think so - I was a bit surprised to see him going up quite so early as it had been quite a warm day, and it was probably still thermic - there's quite a lot of trees around here, and I think that there might have been some diabatic lift/sink last evening. I used to do a bit of gliding, so I had some awareness of thermic activity, and I once experienced a heart stopping moment during such a spell when after getting a fairly good lift due to the diabatic effect, we then entered an area of very strong sink (about 6 down on the variometer which is a lot) and with about 700 feet on and quarter of a mile from the airfield, just got back in crossing the public road at about 30 feet and almost clipping the fence - we landed downwind about half a mile from the launch point. As far as the balloon flight is concerned, I would not have been all that chuffed after building up to the experience of a lifetime that it ended so quickly and possibly with heart in mouth - I do hope that the punters all got a refund or a replacement flight as they would probably have been paying about £130 each.

 

The good news is that winter can come as soon as it likes, as I've now got a load of logs, coal (he forgot the kindling, but then you can't expect everything to go right), a thoroughly clean chimney - oh and an empty wallet. I am surprised at the price of logs round here - the average for a 2m² load is about a hundred quid - you'd think wood no longer grows on trees - my new supplier seems to get it both ways, as he's a tree surgeon, so he charges for the wood to be taken down, keeps it for about a year, then sells it on!
