I have just had the great misfortune to use Windows 10

What  sh*te of slack bladdered cockwombles came up with this unuseable bag of dog droppings.

Windows has been on a downward spiral since they superseded version 3.1. Apparently code named Janus!

Obviously W10 is called Hugh Janus!

I must say, that as a Mac user of many years, when I set up my granddaughter's laptop with Win 10 I was staggered at how poor it was in comparison.

VW owners possibly facing a lot more road tax. I am just keeping me fingers crossed that Ford didn't use similar computer programmes although I am comfy with the £40.00 of diesel fuel every two months instead of every three weeks.

.....I had heard that it was just one engine variant in the diesel range Larry....has that changed?

Morning all. I have never had a problem seeing Dom's pictures on my Chromebook and hope he keeps posting them. As for Aditi's employers, she does seem to better off out of it but there are pillocks in every organization wherever you go. On the VW scandal does the US have regular emission test like our MOT where these results are fiddled or are the manufactures test figures accepted on introduction of a new model? Is it being called VWgate yet?

Stay safe all.

Greetings all, I see blue skies and distant white clouds over Borough Market Junction replacing the earlier murky grey drizzle.

I read that VW are admitting to fiddling the EU tests too. How that is done when testing is independent remains to be seen. Suspicion falls on other manufacturers too.

Like Pete I always think it sounds odd when Anthony's h is pronounced.

And as for "haitch" - this seems to be a spreading phenomenon and needs to be stamped out! You can even find "aitch" in the dictionary .

I also agree with Jock about the habit of naming children with diminutives.

Happy birthday Ian. And it's good to see a general all round improvement in people's health on here - let's hope Aditi follows suit.

As a distant ancestor of mine raped Mary and then was accused of killing her husband we had to make amends somehow....(one was right the other wrong in my view).

Best, Pete.

I'll have to start looking into my ancestry again. I found an article mentioning that a person with the same surname as myself was hung at Wapping for piracy in the late 1500's. I wondered if perhaps he could have been a relative as my surname is relatively rare in the south of the country. I had traced the name back about 180 years and discovered that I am descended from a long line of Thames watermen. I have recently found out that the crime of piracy did not just cover pirates of the 'Long John Silver' variety but included such minor offences as stealing goods from vessels moored in port. I have often joked about finding an ancestor hung for stealing sheep but I might have one hung for the marine equivalent. :jester:

The EPA are responsible for testing new cars. They can actually take them off the assembly line to do it - or out of customer’s hands.

Unlike Europe where the EU rely on manufacturer supplied  data.

Best, Pete.

With the deviousness of the software taking one off the production line for the tests the car would and did pass. Only when a couple of researchers did some on the road testing did the true results reveal themselves.

At the risk of mentioning railways on here (sorry Debs), this is an interesting article on the BBC site if you've not spotted it yet: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-34333684

On "haitches" - my ex was a "haitch"er.  Set my teeth on edge every time I heard it...

I'm christened Michael - Mum and Dad, most relatives and folk who knew me before Uni call me Michael - some close friends from 6th Form (and their sisters) call me Mikey to this day, but to most people I've met since starting at Uni I've been Mike.

Happy Birthday Ian...

Thursday and therefore "escape Long Island" day for me. We'll see how well that goes, given the Pope is scheduled to arrive at JFK 30 minutes after our scheduled departure!

Glad I no longer live in Manhattan (was nearly 40 years ago, mind you) as they are already as of 8AM closing a bunch of streets in preparation for his arrival at 6PM there! Morning news shows already noting it's going to be a congested debacle.

Only thing to note from yesterday is that our front deck wasn't started due to weather conditions (heavy rain predicted all day) and may be the same situation today <sigh>. Was hoping it'd be mostly complete by the time I returned. Never mind.

Now been projected that I'll be on this project/travelling here every other week, until the end of March 2016 - oh well, I guess I don't "need" to be able to see the outside world really.

Cool 11 and sunny driving in, 23 for the high AGAIN today, third day in a row now, not that I've checked that it reaches that.

Have a good Thursday everyone - I'll probably report in from JFK in about 6 hrs. once I know the extent of the cock-up scenario :jester:

Thanks Ian (and others who have clicked / said the same)

Andrew C has just txt me the tap list for the Euston Tap. Might be long evening and an even longer day tomorrow.

There must be a double act going on  - my boss reckons hes the Pope, well, hes just said he is to our solicitor for some reason :sungum:

Good luck with getting out of JFK. NYC is one place that I could not live. Much prefer Chicago but couldn't live there either. Wouldn't turn down an apartment if was given to me though.

A couple of times, I've told Americans who've referred to Scots as "English" that that's roughly like calling someone from one of the Southern states a Yankee. Would that be about right?

I got into trouble on here for using Yankee. I used it in the same way as we are called Poms, Brits, Limeys etc not as a Yankee from certain States. Apparently someone took offence. Strange when you consider the US use Polaks and Canaks etc.

Seeing as urea is chemically identical to sheep urine there's a joke in there somewhere.

Something about pi$$ing in the tank?  ;)

Evening all.  Nocturnal visit for a change as it's morning for many "Topside" ERs.

No issues whatever with any images being displayed here either on Safari / OS X or on the Eye Phone.  I don't have an eyePad - when I grew up such things were only used for protection of the specific facial regions ;)

Names I'm glad I am not blessed with include Jack, son of Mr & Mrs Schitt or indeed Rick, son of Mr & Mrs O'Shea.  There's more where those came from.  Vehicle model names seemed to reach a new low when Ford could come up with nothing more than Ka to name their new car.  At least Kia has an i in the middle even if their own C'eed is one of the quirkier names in recent times albeit still the best small car I've ever driven.

Oh and happy birthday Ian, which I missed

Me too.  And from me too.

I'm off to the Sleeping Car.  See you all anon.  Behave while I'm gone.

I’ve missed photos of your workshop, Debs....... Have you been busy?

Best, Pete.

No Pete, these past 9 months or so, have been really difficult (health wise); so most practical work just got shelved......things are improving now; the sap {of cutting fluid} is once again, starting to rise! :yahoo:

It's truly a beautiful world if we take care of it.

BEFORE-AND-AFTER PHOTOS OF AUTUMN'S BEAUTIFUL CHANGES

Without stopping to take a look around, we can sometimes miss the transition of our surroundings from summer to autumn. But just in case you’ve been watching the trees change colors, here’s a list of photos that compare various locations before and after they change into their autumn colors.

Besides the nip in the air, the scarves, and the delicious autumn fruits and vegetables, the changing leaves are probably the greatest sign of autumn that there is. Chlorophyll, which is the green pigment in leaves that produces energy for trees, gradually breaks down in the fall, revealing the many other colours that also exist in leaves. That’s where we get the rich browns, oranges, yellows and reds that we associate with the season.

Yes, apparently their onboard computer can recognize certain rpm coupled with the front wheels not being steered for a certain amount of time. In Europe all the company has to do is lie...

I’m wondering whether the F1 Red Bull Team will still get their engines from VW/Audi - being that fines and associated costs from the USA alone could total over $18Bn US

Best, Pete.
