Good morning all,

Up at last after a late night and a lot to eat and even more to drink. Feeling a bit muzzy but I don't seem to be suffering too much! We had a superb night out and a great time was had by all.

Many thanks to everyone for all the good wishes.

I think a quiet lazy day is called for........

Well, it's a properly grey day here in C-s-M and no mistake.

Up half the night watching Le Mans and unwittingly upsetting Andy - sorry Andy - and looking forward to a day of slobbing about when I get a phone call inviting me to a barbecue at #1 son's - apparently he went to his fridge and it was so full he had to organise a barbecue to get shot of it. Not a problem we had at his age!

He also has an unerring knack of organising things that interfere with my motorsport watching.

So I'm off to finish the lining on a freelance loco and then a shower. Whether outdoors or in the bathroom looks like a moot point...

Have a good day, all.

Dogs walked - now to lunch and something else.

SWMBO has discovered half the dining table to sew on, so I'm relegated elsewhere.

Hang on, if she's got half the dining table I can't use it to clear up the other carp I have round, can I?

RESULT!

Nah you didn't upset me mate. I missed the Le Mans race, and stayed up until late watching Thunderbirds. Yes I am that sad! Hope bbq went well.

Best Le Mans race in years....

Whilst I enjoyed sitting next to Webber the most - Hartley was actually the smoother driver of #17. I was surprised that when I awoke #19 was in the lead.

Next year FORD will be back with their Cortina, oops, GT.

Best, Pete.

I always thought that the silliest bit of marketing I've ever seen was when Ford abandoned the Cortina name.

It gave all the fleet buyers a license to look at other marques.

Did Vauxhall no end of good!

Afternoon All

Back after a most pleasant shortish break away in Berkshire, which was quite unexpected, but as 30747 managed to get some time off, and the people whose house we borrow were still away, we decided to give the new car a good run, as well as have a few days away.  It was most enjoyable, even if the weather was pretty odd - a couple of days where ne needed sunglasses and the air conditioning running in the car, and a couple where we needed sweatshirts, and the heater running - and the return trip was dire, with heavy rain much of the way, and also thick fog round Gloucester, with an artic spread across the Air Balloon Roundabout - the fog was so bad there that it looked as if he missed the roundabout and went straight across it.  On the way down, we were overtaken by a couple of motor cyclists of the type that one would rather not meet - weaving around the other traffic, etc, and then a few miles down the road, seeing one of them had come a cropper after an encounter with a 4WD.  Luckily not all bikers are of that ilk, though living where we do, we see rather more of them than our fair share as they run the A683 to Kirkby Lonsdale - in fact as I type this, I can hear two of them revving hard coming out of the 30 mph area at Caton...Now I know that many here are (or were) bikers, and I'm really not tarring all with the same brush - most are sensible types who ride safely and considerately.

Other than that, I do hope that all are well, and accounted for - and that there's not too many ailing, or with ailing family members.  So it's generic commiserations and congrats as needed, and hopefully normal service will now be resumed.

Regards to All

Stewart

‘Lo Stewart! Glad you are well!

Actually I’m lusting after a Mark 2 Escort BDA - that’s really sad.....and I still think that the Mark 2 Cortina 1600E was a good car (even compared to the Mark 1 Lotus Cortina). So I’m either not all bad, Pete but possibly crazy, of course.

Best, Pete.

Evening all

Eleven girl guides, leaders and a helper

I think they may have changed their tune if they had been made to re-cock and load them

Re-cocking girl-guides could take some of us back a few years, I suspect...

He just pitted and was overtaken by Albuquerque.....

Hands up all those who thought Albuquerque was still in New Mexico!

As Pete says, a vintage Le Mans, with the pressure on in every one of the four classes. The days of driving sensibly and steadily to finish are long gone. Now it's a 24-hr sprint. The winning Porsche, then driven by F1 Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg, was lapping in the last few minutes at a rate similar to the best times set on the Test Day a fortnight ago. Usual sad stories, not least Aston Martin, who have had some dreadful luck in recent years. They were leading the GTE-Am class by a substantial margin until their car failed to negotiate the Ford chicane.....

This was my third LM since Deb died, and Sherry made huge efforts to help me enjoy it. She was supposed to leave me at the circuit mid-evening, and sleep here before setting off this morning back to Blighty, ahead of the funeral in Devizes tomorrow. But I couldn't let her do that, so came home and stayed overnight myself, being back at the track just before 9. Her willingness to adopt a sport about which she (like most) knows very little is amazing. I am so lucky!

The Members' Grandstand that we use offers an elevated view along the whole pit-lane, and the ordinary racegoers are on the terraces below. A Dutch group of punters down there had a trumpeter with them, and he was really good, with Gershwin and the Marseillaise both being played sans bum note. That sort of jamboree atmosphere is part of LM.

I had heard via the Internet that someone important might be starting the race this year - previous recent luminaries include Fernando Alonso and some US space veteran. The rumours were right, police presence was high - and some bloke called Hollande got a lot of boos. He's President, I believe. Interestingly, his politically-opposed predecessor in office appointed a prime minister with Sarthe origins, and now that ex-PM's brother is head of the ACO, the organising club.

Hope your weekend has been restful, and tomorrow can be coped with.

ISTR the 1600E shared the A-frame suspension with the Mk2 Twin Cam version. It could be a bit "funny" at times, I believe.

Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. I didn't rise late this morning  just spent a bit more time soaking in the tub than usual and a need to be somewhere else before 11. That somewhere else was a toy fair, I picked up a couple of diecasts and an old Triang-Hornby car carrier with 6 Minix cars for only £10. I had noticed that a couple of the Minix cars where quite rare, one especially so (Vauxhall Victor). That and the other uncommon model, a Simca have been swopped for some more common ones and the car carrier with a full compliment of cars will be on our club sales stand in three weeks time.

Ian,

I like “character”! Actually it had a nice “squat” under acceleration......

How was Le Mans from the stand?

I watched all of it from the Porsche USA site - all in cockpit and you could jump from one car to another as if sitting in a non-existent passenger seat, quite entertaining (Radio Le Mans linked to at the same time). The Fox channel only had one hour of coverage.....it did include the “slow section” accident, however.

How did Sherry take it all on? EDIT: Oops just read your full post, sorry. Still noisy in the “canyon”?

Best, Pete.

Sherry has been prescribed hearing aids. She seldom needs them when near me, and certainly omitted them for this weekend! I don't seem to suffer too much. Being brain-dead helps.

I've been watching LM from the same stand for more than decade. Pet peeves are the corporate guests who have no idea what they are watching and spend most of the weekend away from the stand being "entertained", while lots of genuine but poor enthusiasts would love the chance........ Sadly corporate is the way of the world in all such events these days. Then there are those who must have seats - they are numbered on your ticket - but prefer to stand at the front rail blocking the view of those in their seats on the first few rows.

This was a few years ago. I may have have overdone the lighting slightly (looks like an illuminated Blackpool tram!)

Ahh, a rest day!  TT is over.

So much for that, all day doing jobs on the camper van and then in the garden, I'm knackered!

Jock, sorry to disillusion, but it's only a Panasonic Lumix compact!  TZ35 or something like that.  They do have Leica lenses, it is the second one we have had after the first developed a fault after many, many photos and being abused regularly - they live in my pocket when out on the bikes! If you PM me your e mail then I can send a higher resolution shot of John McPint for your screen!

Just checked - DMC-TZ35.  Very easy to use, generally shutter priority for the bike stuff but you can just let it do everything! Oddly this one isn't as good for model (railway....) photography as the earlier one we had, losing out on depth of field which I don't understand.  I must see what is hidden in the menus.....we've had it over a year and I have only just realised it has a burst mode.

Stewart, thanks for recognising we're not all nutters.
