RMweb Gold grandadbob Posted December 17, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 17, 2013 (edited) When I turned 16, I was told that if I waited a year to learn to drive, my parents would pay towards it! Consequently, I never got my Bike license. Similar story here Robert but the reason I was never allowed one at 16 was because Dad lost half a leg & part use of his right arm after coming off a bike. The fact that it was during a WW2 training exercise that went wrong when he was blown off the the thing didn't make any difference! Coombe Barton
, hopefully enough light around to get some bird photos. Is this allowed on a family forum?
Coombe Barton
So went out at ten past seven to discover that car wasn't iced. Then Sandy notices that next door neighbour is scraping her car. The temperature dropped sufficiently in twenty minutes to ensure that I was also scraping mine. On the work at home front it seems that most staff at work are also working at home. Hmmmm. RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted December 17, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 17, 2013 Morning all Up early-ish - well I'd been awake since 5.30 so I thought I might as well. Fed the horses in darkness and then back for breakfast. A little bit of frost this morning, but basically w are having a mild spell for mid- December, with 10 or 11 degrees likely today. I have to see the dentist at 11, so there's a joy. Hope things are easy today for you all - DD seems to be the worst sufferer at present. Presumably 2014 can only be better for him.
trisonic
I can't sleep either! I got up just now for some tea and noticed that the temperature had risen from -10C to -6C.... More snow today from an Alberta Clipper, 4 inches. Pfsst! I fart in its general direction. Best, Pete.
RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted December 17, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 17, 2013 Morning A frosty start up on the mountain road here this morning caught out a couple of drivers, a Jag XK-R in particular being comprehensively trashed, all 4 corners and the engine and box sticking out though the bonnet - one vehicle accident too! Looked like a three-turn spin. A nice sun rise now, but rain forecast.
RMweb Gold Shedman5 Posted December 17, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 17, 2013 Morning, slight frost, its looks like its going to be a cold but sunny day. Off to the Lakes for a walk and pub lunch which will be nice more so as I'm not driving ! Xmas tree put up under supervision yesterday, one set of lights decided only half of them would work, discovered a wire had come away so after finding where it should have been it was out with the soldering iron and sorted. Enjoy the day

RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted December 17, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 17, 2013 Morning all, I hope too that DD's day is not as grim as it could be - indeed preferably a minimum of grimness. Our Christmas Trees are still stored up in the attic and won't be coming down from there until Saturday (oh dear, that means sorting the dining room for Tree No.2) and it will be interesting to see what the cats make of them, or bash off them. Did some Christmas ordering with that nice man in Alton yesterday so must get down there soon to collect my ill-gotten gains (just a few wagons but 'something else' might arrive in time for Santa to give it to me. Anyway off now to be chiropracted, then the bank, then the Post Office - what a busy life one leads in retirement, could stop for breakfast somewhere as well, now taht's a thought. Have a nice day one and all.
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted December 17, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 17, 2013 A bit of excitement - the stone train has gone in, passing at 07:00 in darkness, usually it comes out at 17:30, which is fine in the summer, but at this time of year, not good BUT there is also a lunchtime path which leaves Norwich at 12:00 - presumably a "job and pop" opportunity and it's just been activated - a good sign, although this can happen automatically and the train doesn't run, but I'm feeling confident today. Pete - my mother was NOT a hamster and my father did NOT smell of Elderberries.

RMweb Premium AndyB Posted December 17, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 17, 2013 New oven door parts ordered - I took a look at the inner door and the brackets at the bottom had clearly been worked over with a screwdriver - I'm not sure they should have jagged edges sticking out at odd angles. So, as well as a new handle I ordered an inner door. These may get to us before Christmas. Meantime I'm going to see if I can source a strong superglue that will secure the broken plastic parts for a few days. If anyone has a recommendation on which glue to use then I'd be grateful! As others have said, I hope DD's day works out as best as possible and that 2014 brings better fortune! Andy

Is the joint exposed to high temperature in the oven? If so, it might need something more specialised... http://uk.gorillaglue.com/eng/glues/glue-guide/2/
RMweb Gold Tony_S Posted December 17, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 17, 2013 (edited) Don't use cyanoacrylate superglues. They decompose when heated to very unpleasant choking compounds with similar effects to those used in crowd control. If the handle doesn't reach 160 C then I would try Chemical Metal which is a Plastic Padding product hopefully available in Halfords. A similar product is Super Steel and although I glued various bits of our Volvo engine and body trim with it I don't know what its temp range is! RMweb Premium skipepsi Posted December 17, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 17, 2013 Actually they become cyanide compounds and are deadly so not for use on a cooker door inner which will see temperatures over 200oC. The outer door should be at at a temperature of less than 50oC so a possibility there.
RMweb Gold Tony_S Posted December 17, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 17, 2013 And my final advice is when you replace the oven get one with Pyrolytic cleaning. After 90 minutes even the nastiest grime is reduced to a pile of white ash. Probably why the door is triple glazed!
RMweb Premium AndyB Posted December 17, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 17, 2013 Thanks, chaps. You don't want to know what I tried first - I'd get kicked off rmweb for daftness! As it happens I was sent some sample self adhesive tapes by a manufacturer wanting me to include the stuff as a component in my company's products. I've just emailed to ask for a hazard sheet. And, yes, I was torn between ordering a new oven and replacement parts. Now that I've spent the morning doing a bodge repair and have the fun of the new components to install to look forward to, I reckon I may regret not opting for a new oven! I now have an hour and a bit to finish the Christmas shopping before school pick up time. Grrrr. Andy
Ashcombe
Hello everyone! I hadn't forgotten you over the last few days but other events ("The Railway Children"; visitors; and a staff crisis at Pre School) have conspired to make me absent. Should I supply a note?! When I have time on the PC, I'll post some photos but, for now, here's a cautionary tale:- Last week we decided it was time to replace our defunct mailbox which is attached to a stone gate post (we have electric gates). Large box duly ordered and arrived but contents were not checked until our friendly handyman turned up at 0900 today. Big oops! O/H had inadvertently ordered a rear emptying one! No good to us so it's now winging (I exaggerate - this is Royal Mail!!) its way back to the supplier to be swapped. Happy days!
