Tony, I have a Sony also that exhibits a similar problem from time to time. I traced it back to a intermittent connector to the battery pack. I find that unplugging the battery and plugging it back in cleans the contacts and all returns to normal. If it doesn't do it the first time round, try it a couple of times. Certainly worth a try before you run the risk of losing stuff....

Thank you. As it looked completely power dead my my first reaction was wondering if the power supply was dead. It wasn't according to my test meter. I did then remove the battery and wait 5 minutes and put it back (as the Sony site suggested ) and it is still dead. I've just tried the method of removing and replacing the battery a few times and it is still dead! It still has some warranty but the data is more precious than the computer so before it goes for any repair replacement I want to get the data off if possible. If I can I'll back the data up to a couple of other pcs initially. I believe I'll be in Basildon tomorrow at 10am waiting for Maplins to open.

Morning all!

10° outside and the birds are twittering - wonder whether they're following each other?

(Getting me coat...)

Yes, that's a bit of advice I have heard as well - my aunt had to do this a couple of times on her laptop (which is a Toshiba, I think), and my mum as well (she has a HP Pavilion).

However, I know this frustrated kind of feeling you must be having, Tony  .

Morning All,

It is a pretty gloomy morning here again. It rained for most of the night.

I managed to get the Mini back together again yesterday - so once it stops raining I can actually go out for a drive! B)

Have a good day everyone :icon_wave:

Happy Sunday, all.

8C and dry here for a change (of late!).

... I'm hoping that the drive is OK ...

in extremis, Tony, there's a company at Epsom, Kroll Ontrack, which specialises is data recovery from dead hard drives. I've had 4 disks to them recently and only one was a total write-off. They remove the platter in a clean room and fit it to a new mechanism! Tad expensive but they do a survey first to see if the data can be got! Hope you don't need them, though!

If I can't recover the data myself I was going to ask for recommendations for data recovery and satisfied customers from ER must be a good testimonial. I'll know in a couple of hours after a trip to Basildon (Maplin Electronics are open at 10am today).

Anyway back to normal ER business! I think it has been raining but is dry now. I think it could be a very pleasant day today.

Morning all,

Don't worry, I haven't just got up, i've been thinking about Calshot (my layout not the place!). Or to be more precise, storing Calshot. At the moment, it is set up in the dining room, which it has been for about 16 months! This is simply because it can't go anywhere else. It cannot be separated as stupidly I built it as one long layout (Yes, I have learnt my lesson now). Therefore, I worked out that I could build a purpose-built unit on wheels in which to store Calshot Mk II. I am just about to start designing it on my 3D program. Anyway, it would probably have three sections - one for the fiddle yard (at the top because it will be the lightest board in theory) and two for the main scenic section. I reckon each space could be around a metre in length and about 0.4m wide.

This would then give me a 2m x 0.4m layout (or roughly 6.5ft x 1.3ft). Of course, I try and avoid rectangular layouts where possible so mine will have a nice flowing curve. The only disadvantage being that I lose a lot of baseboard...

Sorry for 'going off on one' but I find it helps me to write it down. ;)

Tony, I hope you can recover all the data, I nearly lost all my coursework a couple months back but luckily a friend of ours is very nifty on computers and managed to save it all!

Dominik, I hope you have recovered from yesterdays excursion!

Have a good day ERs!

My desk looks like robotic rats have been building nests but data is flowing from my wife's laptop hard drive to my netbook. The usb sata kit was even on special offer at Maplin. Once the data is safe I can reassemble the laptop and see if it can be repaired.

Perhaps you should have bought one with a roof.

It has got one :icon_lol:

However, it also has a hole in the rear wheel arch which I haven't got around to welding yet. Don't want a boot full of water!

Having had a pair of boots full of water years ago I can relate to that! Oh, wait, you meant the kind of boot at the rear of a car - silly me  ;) .

We had an Escort that had mysterious leaks that meant the front passenger was usually damp. Rear light fitting s on cars made in the seventies and eighties seemed prone to leaking water into the boot. With the present car the water just drips off the dog. Fortunately whatever Renault use for boot carpet seems very damp/rot resistant. I've got a friend with an alleged off road capable vehicle that has a boot carpet that has gone mouldy just from a 3 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels delicate little paws.

Laptop news update: courier will collect it on Tuesday, repair if possible takes 10-14 days. All the data is now going from my netbook to an external drive.

That's a wise idea, I would think. Basically, there can never be too many backups.

One other bit of advice for you, Tony - have you considered using an automatic backup programme which would allow you to automatically perform data backups to external drives at certain intervals or after specific events? There are a couple of both free and commercial offerings available.

Or, if you know how to set it up or have somebody available who does, you might also consider setting up an external drive as a network-attached storage device or NAS - which could then hold backups from all computers in your house.

We can get free storage from our ISP. I think I'll set it up on my wife's PC when it gets back. I did suggest last year that we should get a homeserver but no interest was shown (then!) I did buy two different NAS devices last year and had to return them as they would not work. It was very frustrating. I am a believer in "to err is human, if you really want to mess things up get a computer!". I'm not really a Luddite,I just get frustrated when it doesn't do what it says on the box.

ISP storage should be fine as well, though I would generally prefer having my storage device in my home. A friend of mine is running a NAS which is set up such that it can be accessed by Windows, Linux and Mac OS X systems alike, as he has all three in his household. This, of course, can be quite costly.

I suspect I could buy anything backup related at the moment. I've been really really good and have not said "I did warn you .." Fortunately our child is quite good about backups because he has to move work between the netbook he takes to college and his home PC. When he was at school his economics teacher lost his course-work. It apparently flew out of her open top BMW while driving home (makes a change from the dog ate it!). She asked Matthew if he had a backup and could reprint it. Of course he said no but he only wanted to see how worried she got and admitted he did!

Blimey - from the shouts and squeals from SWMBO and daughter (who also must be obeyed) I thought there must have been at least a murder committed downstairs.

Much worse, according to them.

It was a wasp. I know the temperature reached double figures today but it still seems a bit strange.
