bluex5
clicky Despite the denials at the time when the engine was fired up within the corpse 37, I guess this was always the next logical step. Edited September 8, 2010 by Mod2 Title edited as Dan couldn't find it on a search ;-)
brian daniels
Think you ought to change the thread title to D5900 as I think there are enough Teddy Bears in service already
Allegheny1600
Great stuff! I certainly hope a reasonably reliable machine can be built now. BTW did you mean D5900 ??? I think there are quite a few D9500s in preservation! Cheers, John E. Oops! BD beat me by a minute! Edited September 6, 2010 by Allegheny1600
bluex5
I'm glad some of the RMweb massive are awake, unlike myself!!!! The power unit should have most of the "field mods" implemented by EE to improve availability, and it's been fettled by some guys who know Deltic engines inside out. Once they had all been rebuilt the locos availability wasn't too bad, although a mixed traffic Type 2 was never the best place to use a Deltic engine. 60B
So basically, they want to take a gas axe to a 37 then bolt together parts of it and stick on other bogies? If we did that in the modelling world, we would be branding nut jobs! However this is a unique project and proper ambitious. I like the idea of this as its not just another cl37 restoration. RMweb Premium pete_mcfarlane Posted September 6, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 6, 2010 So basically, they want to take a gas axe to a 37 then bolt together parts of it and stick on other bogies? There's a Monty Wells article in the May/June 1983 Railway Modeller that explains all of the necessary modifications!

Supaned
Blimey - I never saw this coming! Good luck to those involved in this project - to my mind the diesel equivalent of Tornado (not so much in the prestige side of things , but the recreation of a missing class). We can only hope that somebody can unearth a Paxman lump to build an NBL type 2 around for the next one....
60B
Supaned, Tornado was built out of brand new components. This is been built from comonents already there.
Pete Piszczek
Fantastic! I hope these guys the best, it would be really something to see a Baby Deltic in operation at one of the preserved lines.
Jenny Emily
£30,000 seems like excellent value for money for this project. With the number of new build steam locomotive projects in recent years it was only a matter of time I suppose before some-one tried something similar for diesels. 'CHARD
Where'd the 30k come from JE, was it in the press release? If that's an out-turn projection, I'd go further than saying it's good value, I'd add the adjective optimistic.
Xerces Fobe2
It appears that this is full size railways copying railway modellers and kit bashing a loco together I bet the DCC Chip will be impressive! Good luck to this group; it will be great to see the finished product. The Baby Deltic was always a favorite loco of mine, unfortunately I only managed to see D5905/9 at Stratford after they were withdrawn. If they already have a working power plant, generator, tractions motors on the Class 20 bogies, all the expensive parts, and free labor...
Supaned
Supaned, Tornado was built out of brand new components. This is been built from comonents already there. I know Tornado is a new build , I was using the analogy of creating a long lost locomotive class - be that by a total new build such as Tornado(though IIRC , there are some "real" A1 parts on it) , or by a cut-and-shut such as this proposed Baby Deltic. Either way , we get to see a locomotive that is long extinct.
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted September 6, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2010 Yeah, but what about us mugs who currently can say we saw 8 out of 10 Baby Deltics, and will now have our score reduced? Deflated or what?!
RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted September 6, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 6, 2010 But which 37? 37372 is the current host of the engine and I think this is likely to be one used as the donor...

If they already have a working power plant, generator, tractions motors on the Class 20 bogies, all the expensive parts, and free labor... You may have a point Pete; I'm more used to the typical heavy overhaul prices the leasing companies deal in - those guys wouldn't get any change from 30k for a single overhauled bogie for a Class
60B
37372 is the current host of the engine and I think this is likely to be one used as the donor... I was reffering to the 37 in the article as they are a minefield.

RMweb Gold RedgateModels Posted September 6, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2010 I soooo wish I had some free time to help out on this, it's only just up the road from Mansfield. Donation at least will be on it's way B)

RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted September 6, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2010 But in compensation we will be able to go for a trip behind the replica with some confidence of reaching our destination this time. So it won't be an accurate representation then?
S.A.C Martin
I think it deserves a donation - once the pay cheque clears, I'm sending some money. The chance to see a class 23 in my lifetime? Yes please. *And yes, I'm aware it'll be a representation to some degree, but then so is Lyd, Tornado, Taliesin...and none of them are any less "real" locomotives for it. £30,000 - if all us like minded souls chipped in £30 each, they'd be halfway there in a month or so.
