RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted August 22, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 22, 2010 This 7 1/4" gauge A4 that will be 4903 'Peregrine' appeared at Gilling today for a push around for testing for clearences through ponts and around curves, only the front bogie wheels at fault, the flanges were touching the drain cock cross shaft. Along the boiler. In the smokebox. Looking down in front of the smokebox. Framing inside the cladding. Just to show how big it is! It took some pushing aswell! RMweb Gold PhilH Posted August 26, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 26, 2010 Lovely - do you know who makes the castings / drawings etc. I know Don Young used to do a 5" version (I've got all his drawings for a 5" A3), just curious as to who does the 7 1/4". Guest jim s-w
Cool What sort of pressures will the boiler be under? Still plenty enough to kill you if it popped I imagine? Whats scale speed for 125mph? Cheers Jim
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted August 26, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 26, 2010 Whats scale speed for 125mph 16mph if my maths is correct. Which is very fast on 7 1/4. Done 12mph on a big 7 1/4 loco and that really showed that it's balance was way out. You forget how sophisticated the calculations are on reciprocating weights on the big ones. Lovely loco, friend of mine has an 040-040 beyer garratt in the same scale and it's stunning.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted August 27, 2010 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 27, 2010 I can answer some of your questions, the loco not being mine - I will ask Mike, The boiler pressure will be 120psi and it is VERY heavy, the tender, which is finished, weighs 80Kg. Sorry, don't know who does the castings.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted August 30, 2010 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 30, 2010 Found a bit more info about Perigrine, It is a Model Works kit which was part way through when they finished, Mike was one of the lucky ones that got a boiler. richardw1970
The loco passed it's Steam Test today and has run for the first time, a couple of very minor adjustments to make but ran very well, a credit to the years of hard work modifying/replacing the Modelworks bits. A very powerful loco.
