RMweb Gold 4630 Posted February 10, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 10, 2015 The phrase 'King Coal' is probably unfamiliar to younger readers, or those who don't have connections with the (former) coal mining industry in the UK. 'King Biomass' doesn't have quite the same ring to it. Coal trains from distant UK ports rather than local pits feed the three hungry Aire Valley power stations in Yorkshire at Drax, Eggborough and Ferrybridge. Having discharged its load, 66119 heads 4A48 on 9th February - another load of empty hoppers from Drax.

bluebottle
Gladys at Norchard 2014. Nikon F2 Photomic with HP5. It seems such an age since I did any photography using film; I'd forgotten how good HP5 was is. Lovely control of tonal range, there, ParkeNd! Peter Kazmierczak
Just under five and a half days until the next departure from this platform. Better make myself comfy in the rather spartan shelter on the down platform at Pilning.

Porcy Mane
Smoke about to get in their eyes. Shap this morning. and nothing to do with this thread but 200 yards further North this thirty foot ISO container lay. Told it had been blown of a northbound train at 3:00 am this morning, skidding across the opposite track and down the embankment with the only casualties being a couple of bushes, about five yards of dry stone wall and some displaced embankment' Luckily no train coming the other way and the overhead wasn't touched. Can't find any mention of it via google. Strange considering this also happened in 2008. http://www.aslef.org.uk/information/100012/100039/106454/winds_blow_containers_from_freight_trains/ P Edited March 7, 2015 by Porcy Mane

Axlebox
Morning Porcy According to Ken Harper writing on the Cumbrian Railway chatroom... At approx. 02:30 a container was blown from the 4S83 Basford Hall - Coatbridge freightliner service, the missing container was in fact first reported by a member of the public who found it in the morning. It blew across the path of the 23:40 Glasgow - Euston sleeper which passed the spot 10 minutes later. No damage to infrastructure has been reported. This so easily could have had a different outcome Porcy with only sheer good fortune preventing a very serious accident.
