Poole MRS 20th October 2024 - Return of 'Bournemouth West'

It's with great pleasure that Poole & District MRS host Bournemouth West on the layouts first exhibition following its return to the exhibition circuit. This iconic layout has featured in the model railway press over the years (including the upcoming Railway Modeller in October 24) and following acquisition by new owners has undergone scenic enhancements and is now ready to return. In addition there are 15 other quality model railway layouts, some of which have featured in the model railway press and at major national and regional shows, all in all this will be a quality exhibition, make sure you don't miss it.

 

The exhibition will be held on Sunday, 20th October at it's usual venue, details are:

Opening Times: 10:00 to 4:30

Admission: £8 Adult, Children 12-16 yrs £5, Under 12's free (Cash or Card)

Access: Venue is fully disabled compliant

Car Parking: Substantial free onsite parking

Sadly Swanage Railway stand is not attending due to logistic problems

My gosh didn't it pour it down! I've never had to get the layout set up in torrential rain before... but somehow everything stayed working despite not having a way to cover the layout!
Fortunately, I'd left enough time for set up to let the backscene board dry out enough to put the paper backscene on top, and that I always store the backscene in a tube. The perils of having an awkward shaped layout that you can't box up, and have to dissassemble/assemble each time.

 

Anyway, whilst I didn't get much chance to look around as I always exhibit solo, the show seemed to have a great mix of layouts. Very, very happy to have been voted the 2nd best in show. I'll take that any day of the week! Many thanks to all the lovely visitors, stewards, and exhibitors who came and had a chat, and were so generous with their compliments. 

Sadly, after 4 hours, one of the point motors failed to fire in one direction (I will have to finally take the plunge and swap out the SEEPs for MTB ones I think, as the failure rate seems quite high), but luckily it wasn't one of the two crucial points, so it only meant that I couldn't use the loco shed lines for a couple of hours.

Ahead of the exhibition, I decided to add a few new elements, including new signage, an activity for children to do (which was very popular with kids and adults alike, much to my surprise!), various posters so that visitors can find out more about the layout, added a few animals to the layout, and finally 'borrowed' the food kiosk from my BRM beach diorama.

My thanks again to the stewards from P&DMRS, who were incredibly kind and helpful! I do hope the exhibition pulled in plenty of monies for the club.

Thank you for your kind comments Jamie, we certainly did get off to a very soggy start to the day, but once the show got underway we all seemed to be enjoying the event despite the weather.

 

Sandy Shores is a fine layout and fully deserves to be as popular as it is, it appeals to us modellers who appreciate the work, skills and artistic acumen to build such a layout, but also to the general public who love the little layout with the lighthouse.

 

A big thank you to all the exhibitors, traders and visitors who braved the atrocious weather to make such an enjoyable day, all the club members really enjoyed the day.

 

We haven't done the sums yet, but ticket sales were in excess of 500 visitors, which for a one day show on the south coast on a rainy day is a good result.
