RMweb Gold Popular Post Darius43 Posted August 17 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted August 17 (edited) I picked up this second hand Lima Class 101. Someone had done a reasonable job of detailing and weathering the chassis but more can be done. First off the Lima pizza cutter wheels on the trailer coach were replaced with better wheels. The interior had the floor painted grey. I repainted the floor and painted the seats and partitions before applying home made upholstery decals. This was followed by peops and a driver. The body was then given a clean and re-fitted. The plan is to replace the pancake motor bogie and trailing bogie of the motor coach with more recent Hornby DMU examples. cravensdmufan
Very nice indeed. I love the upholstery. One of my pet hates is seeing plastic carriage interiors that are often manufactured in bright or light colours. Even a quick spray with a dark grey matt paint makes a huge difference. And you have repainted the roofs darker grey, another major improvement. 3
Enfys_Rainbow
Lovely! Always had a soft spot for the Lima 101 - it just looks right to me. Regret selling the 3 car set I had in RR livery! Matt 3
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted August 18 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 18 Motor coach interior completed. Replacement motor and trailing bogies located. I have ordered the newer Hornby 101 chassis part from Peter’s Spares as it will be easier to fit the newer bogies to it. The old Lima bogies will be added to the spares box. Cheers Darius

Thanks.

Rob The Lima 101 was indeed excellent. The sides are especially good. Nice silver window frames, and flush glazing too. The only thing that spoilt the look for me were the front cab windows - they are too long. Hardly noticeable on the RR and NSE liveried models because the black painted surround helps disguise them, but really showed up on the full yellow end versions. There's a Shawplan etch for the front windows which features on another thread here : https://www.rmweb.co.uk/forums/topic/122378-lima-class-101-windows/page/2/ But as Darius has shown us, the model is an excellent base that needs just a little tweaking. Picking out detail and weathering on the underframe also improves the look immensely. 4
dj_crisp
The reggie rail 101 looks smashing! One of my fav lima efforts and I've always fancied having a bash at one. As mentioned above Brian's etched frames do transform the Lima front (and you can also include the reinforced window on yours). I also replace Bachmann shells with these etches as both didn't get them quite right size wise. Where Lima is better than Bachmann is the curve backwards at the top corners are much nicer which leads down the sides of the cab. Saying all that yours looks great and the black does hide the window sizes so I'd also be tempted to leave alone!
NickL2008
Hopefully the next model is anyone else does it will finally address these issues, the windows at the front look odd and the squashed destination box does look odd. Had plenty of goes at the Lima and then Limby model. It does polish up ok if you're willing to put the work in like with many of their models NL
RMweb Gold Popular Post Darius43 Posted August 20 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted August 20 The replacement “modern” Hornby motor coach chassis arrived today and the interior, motor and trailing bogies were fitted to it. I added 3D printed buffer hosiery from West Hill Wagon Works. Light weathering of the new chassis to finish. Cheers Darius 18 5

Those WHWW 3D-printed DMU bufferbeam details are also something to behold, I'll have to give those serious consideration myself. I have a Limby blue/grey 3-car set (converted from 4 marker lights to 2-character headcodes, which really narrows down its identity!) and recently obtained a mint Lima triple in green syp - it runs very well with a DMU-like growl! I really like the Lima 'Met-Cam', it was such a massive leap from the Class 117........and yet there's one area where the old '117' trumps the '101' - it has controls on the control desk! So did the old Tri-ang '101' for that matter. A strange oversight by Lima 🤔...... 2

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted August 28 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 28 (edited) Obtained an unboxed Hornby Class 101 centre coach from eBay in blue/grey livery. I detached the coach body from the chassis and removed the interior. The window glazing was carefully removed and the body masked for painting into Regional Railways livery. The first class logos were removed from the window glazing using the end of a cocktail stick dipped in white spirit. The wooden cocktail stick is abrasive enough to remove the painted on sign but soft enough not to scratch the clear plastic. Upholstery decals are next for the interior plus Fox Transfers lining to the coach body. Cheers Darius Edited August 28 by Darius43

RMweb Premium ColinK Posted August 28 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 28 Your seat transfers really improve the model. Maybe you could sell your design to one of the transfer makers. 1

Darius, I'm interested in how you managed to remove the glazing without damaging it as both Lima and Hornby 101 glazing seems very firmly glued in, and I am very nervous about using too much force. Thanks, Graham
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted August 28 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 28 (edited) Hi Graham, The glue securing the glazing appeared to have atrophied over time so gentle pressure on the outside of each window whilst prying off the inside bottom edges with a sharp blade was sufficient to pop out the glazing with no damage - working along from one end of the coach to the other. Cheers Darius Edited August 28 by Darius43
Halvarras
This seems to be a luck of the draw thing - I had a green Hornby Class 121 bubb!e car which started to shed its glazing when I didn't want it to, and a Network South East one which I wanted to de-glaze for a repaint but it wouldn't budge at all - I tried using a chisel blade to split the glue but had to give up when the tip of the blade showed signs of exiting through the outside of the bodyshell 😲!
RMweb Premium dagrizz Posted August 28 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 28 I've just tried to remove the glazing from one Lima and one Hornby green 101 bodies with rather mixed results. Some windows came away OK without damage, some had edge damage and a couple were so well glued in that they would not budge at all. I think I have enough decent windows to be able to replace one body's complement. Graham

RMweb Premium JDW Posted September 6 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 6 Both versions look great - it's surprising how good an older model can look with some simple improvements. I've always liked the Lima 101, and often been temped by a Regional Railways one.
