Or is it? Feel free to skip the next few posts if you want to just build and finish the kit as provided.

I didn't as I can't really help myself. So here's a some of the initial adjustments I made...

Here's a photo extract from Southern Nouveau for illustrative purposes showing the frontage of the platform. Looks like an old cast off sleeper to me.

PXL_20240714_140525777.jpg.876f945172d023d49e67dacddc5ce8c9.jpg

The MDF piece by comparison looked too tall and a bit too neat and tidy.

I therefore decided to cut a strip off the bottom, leaving a sleeper about 12" tall. I added blocks under the sleeper as per the photo and then distressed the MDF to make it a bit more knackered looking.

I then looked at the road vehicle opening as below. Again obviously an old sleeper, complete with impression from a chair base.

I hadn't fixed the original kit part so cut it down and distressed it.

From talking to Phil @BrushType4 I understand he's considering making changes to the kit by substituting the original parts for a couple of his special 'used sleepers'.

I must say that I really enjoyed the kit build to this point and it's built into a smashing little(ish) building.

Because it's what I enjoy doing, there's a few more additional details that I'm going to add, including:

# drilling a third bolt hole in the ends of the floor beams

# adding plastic rod in the appropriate holes in the floor beams to simulate bolts

# making and adding hinges, handles and locks to the doors

# fabricating and adding a representation of the horizontal wooden strapping that was fixed to the interior walls. In hindsight, I should have painted the interior walls and fixed this strapping before gluing the walls to the floor

# adding the gutter and downpipe that can be seen in the snip from the Southern Nouveau book

# adding some details to the wooden dowel that forms the ridge to represent joints

# adding some paper overlays to the edges of the roof to represent the L shaped sheet edge detail

I'm also contemplating having a play to see if I can amend the canopy roof to make it look like those tubular steel frames are doing the holding up rather than the MDF supports. I'm thinking of attaching brass rod to the roof underside and drilling holes in the front wall to structurally support the roof, then very carefully adding the tubular steel frames underneath with one edge touching the wall.

I may make a replacement structure to start with so, if it all goes pear shaped, I've still got the original canopy. I will however be sacrificing the strength and robustness of the kit for something that will be more prone to damage and note this won't be everyone's cup of tea.

For others reading this, I must stress these additions are purely personal and aren't intended as a criticism of the kit as supplied, which I still think is great. All in all, nothing major but hopefully just gilding the lily, so to speak.

That's this thread now up to the same point as the Western Thunder one. I'll now have to write up and photograph the additions I've subsequently made....

....and then on to the tricky matter of painting 'concrete'.

I've taken over most of the kitchen table with the large cutting mat

Unfortunately I've lost that luxury at this moment in time.😟

To be fair it's more the dining table but, as the dining room and kitchen are a single space, it tends to get referred to as the kitchen table. I've only nabbed it temporarily as the light next to a large window is better for taking progress photos.

Lovely day in London for work, so on arrival back home I decided it was beer and painting o'clock. Not painting beer o'clock...

First base layers of paint have gone on the main structure. Concrete is IMO the most difficult finish to get right. I think the secret is to throw away the tin of Humbrol "concrete" paint you have. It's really not that colour. It is in fact a whole range of shades and colours.

Will have to check how it looks in the morning, but this is the point at which I called it quits for the evening.

And, to answer my own question above, yes the painting I did the other evening did look ok on daylight.

The last stage was weathering powder and I'm now considering sealing it with a matt varnish. This is for two reasons.

First, that handling the building will affect the powder. Second, that I want to add some more paint on top but I know that wet paint just activates the pigment in the powder and spoils the finish.

Why the reluctance? Well, last time I used a 'clear' varnish, it completely changed the colours, darkening everything.

Also provided by Phil were three of his smaller 0 Gauge kits. A WR permanent way hut, a SR permanent way hut and a SR tool cabin.

There's build photos too if anyone is interested...

I'm a bit later to this thread, but have you seen this thread:

https://www.rmweb.co.uk/forums/topic/76786-detail-drawing-of-concrete-provender-store-wanted/

It has lots of detail photos and my own drawings of the Store that sits opposite the box I'm working at Littleport. The store is I believe the BR version of the SR type.

Will these be on your demo stand at Stafford chum.

Yes, will bring them all along to both Stafford shows... The G0G and SRC ones which are a couple of weeks apart in September. I'm demonstrating at both this year.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for posting the link. I did quite a few searches for photos before starting this kit and annoyingly didn't get a kit on that 2013 thread. Pleased that most of the photos survived the great RMweb photo loss. Good stuff.

Andy,

Very useful they were and I used them in developing the kit.

cheers
