My mineral wagon train

This is a new rake and the one I want to model but could not find the details of. Then I found them.

 

OK Accurascale - too long a lead time.

Arifix, expensive now.

Hang on Iron Mink had some.

 

So printing

4 x 10 foot MXV

10 x MCV

20 x MXV normal (IM modded the STL for me, thanks Jonny)

 

Here is the 10ft version in Chitubox, please note I have been unable to get the Linux version running in Mint, but I did have a spare 10 licence from work, locked down, no updates.

 

 

In total I needed 6 CTBs

 

3 for bodies two off and 3 for various brakes.

 

Other parts required are lots of buffers (LMS), wheels (Gibson), and  tie rods for 9ft (etched ones Cambrian).

 

I used 100% ABS like for the brake gear, and 50/50 standard and ABS like for the bodies, running a long exposure of 5 seconds per layer.

The bearing need filing for fitment.

Bearings need shortening.

 

As I use bearings, I drill out the axle boxes to fit, due to small variations, different prints may need different amounts of recessing, I used 3 different STLs.

If drill too deep a tiny amount of model filler will reset the depth.

Excellent work, very impressive and if you already have a 3D printer it's the way to go, especially for several wagons all the same.  But Airfix (or even the Accurascale ones) still work out a lot cheaper by the time you've added the cost of wheels and depreciation/wear and tear on your printer to the raw materials and cleaning.  Not to mention the value of your slkilled time.  But for this I would be suggesting you could make a few quid as a sideline by producing them and offering them to fellow modellers.

 

To my mind the main  attraction of a 3D printer and CAD is the ability to produce things you can't get RTR or in kit form, and the ability to manufacture unobtainable spare parts to fix defective things that are worth repairing.  For me, the downside of capital cost and big learning curve at my time of life still outweigh these advantages.

Airfix, not cheap anymore, LOTS of work to do, require lots of changes to underframe, top flap conversion, buffers from LMS, decent wheels. as is ONLY MCO

MXV as above, MCV even more underframe work.

 

Accurascale, will be a few years and about 25 a wagon. Still on MCO.

 

So far

2.20 buffers

4.00 wheels

Used less than a £22 bottle

Printing is cheaper and quicker.

Indeed. Why start from an inaccurate model when one can make an accurate one from scratch?

I don't think any of these recycling candidates have cost more than £3, most far less in job lots. 

 

These will all end up in mid to late '50s condition, so far less rework than the OP requires for producing a rake of rebodies and Minfits (although I have done both from Airfix kits). 

 

I'll enjoy the time reworking the great mineral box and that should be all that matters, it is a hobby after all.

I thought the rebodies were done in the mid 60s? Or actually is that retro fitting and rebodies were even later?

Project stalled due to needing to order more wheels.

 

Also need to collate the information for ordering transfers from Railtec.

Just assembling 2 MCV, fitted wheels,then realised I had to remove to fit the brake gear.

 

After this 3 more, I THINK MXV.
