MSV Iron Ore Tipplers for Stone Traffic

Parkside PC63 kits.

MSV1.JPG.b7c35c36260c997ebed60d8686454175.JPG

MSV2.JPG.7380d8b9523bbaeea0be15e435eaab66.JPG

These tended to run in fixed sets roughly one pool per rake. From memory the pools were not often mixed up.

The rakes tended to be between 20 and 32 wagons long.

The supplied transfers are no use at all for a stone traffic MSV.

The kit buffers do not seem to represent the real ones, they look a bit like compressed ones. I fit more accurate buffers from Lanarkshire Model Supplies.

About 60% of these B018 * (see next post)
http://www.lanarkshiremodels.com/lanarkshiremodelsandsupplieswebsite_079.htm

About 40% of these BP01 # (see next post)
http://www.lanarkshiremodels.com/lanarkshiremodelsandsupplieswebsite_159.htm

A lot appeared to have the same roller bearing axle boxes, SKF it appears. Use the ones in green, bits in red are for the spares box.

Some use TIMKEN, hooded ones from here.

Contents.

The stone appears to be a mix, sometimes grey, sometimes beige, weathered in streaks on the side.

Photos of Tytherington quarry should assist as that was AFAIK one of the loading places. RiverCider has also pointed me to Whatley quarry.

Grey and Buff appears correct so the beige streaks from memory are correct.

MSV’s became ZKV when transferred to the Civil Engineers, known as Barbels.

Originally built for iron ore but used for all sorts of other traffics such as sand, stone, scrap and coal.

There was also a small fleet of PSV’s built to the same design and used for iron ore to Irlam and later. Coal to Corby.

Now the ends, drilling is NOT easy, so I took the method using 2mm drill, if I could find my 1mm I would pilot first.

As is, drill through, lump off, finished

MSV4.JPG.478484d09996d2895520fbb983ccd5a9.JPG

Ends are ready, one hole moved slightly, this will be hidden by the  buffer plate, this one is getting B018 as it will be B386019.

I have had four varnish fails, suspect not enough Klear, and the matt is too hard, will try finer coats with longer between on 8, 9, 10. With the 3 damaged having partial repaints and new transfers.

Glueing the ends to the sides, there is nothing in the instructions,  and it fits better the wrong way.

The side lip should be over the ends so wider shorter, yet fits together better narrower longer.

I glue them in pairs, then leave to set.

MSV6.JPG.8c0a660825a2d0cfb4f2c5c8be80ead3.JPG

I use the square ends of steel rulers, after checking they are square, simple test is draw line on end, flip over, if it matches, it is square.

In a reply to a previous thread I was able to identify some of the TOPS pool numbers for MSO MSV and MTV working

out of the Mendips in 1975. At that date Pool 7603 was a 30 wagon MSV set working from ARC Whatley to Fareham along with Pools 7601, 7605, and 7607. Meanwhile Pool 7665 was a mixed Pool 20 MSV 20 MTV working Foster Yeoman Merehead to Theale along with similar set 7663.

https://www.rmweb.co.uk/forums/topic/162893-tops-wagon-pool-identities/

Each Pool would contain a few spares above the number of wagons required for the contract load. There was also a spare set which was used as cover when the other sets each made their periodic visit to Barton Hill carriage and wagon shops for planned preventive maintenance. As you mention the sets were generally kept together so that maintenance dates were the same, though occasionally there was the odd interloper or two.

cheers

Looking forward to updates on this build.

Thanks for the inspiration - I have 12 of these - built ages ago but in a box awaiting painted & transfers (always my Achille's heel - I'm rubbish at it). Now going to finish them off as Pool 7603 wagons.

I replaced all the buffers with LMS ones - mixture of Oleo & Dowty.

Scratch built 6 of these using Dapol tank kit chassis too for some variety - will finish them too

These are the first 5 complete, except buffer stems.

4 are repaints, 1 is new.

They survived varnishing.

Two are upstairs awaiting part repaints.

Three are in just painted.

No pictures as not easy to capture, but the floors are too big, both too long and too wide.

I end up filing off roughly 0.3mm off each side, and about 0.2 off each end.

I will do a photo of the body later in week.

Body done and all OK

DSC01258.JPG.f955eac5cace1a9981b4a3cabe226d0c.JPG

Start on another (3 of them)

I found my 1.0mm drills, so next three were drill through, then 2.0mm from back, then 2.5mm.

First solebar on

DSC01262.JPG.610250583f8cbd4907fefa6c81fe414f.JPG

However it does not fit together, this varies from kit to kit and this is my way of handling too tight wheelsets.

File the bearings shorter, 1mm will do.

Recess the W Irons

They should not splay out now, this BTW varies from wagon to wagon, some are fine.

Apologies to those who have seen this elsewhere, but there is only one way to ensure that the solebars finish up in the right place and that is to use a jig, the kit cannot be relied upon to have the right bits in the right place to allow consistently square and level chassis'.

Now that eileens emporium is no longer trading, is there another stockist of these?

I use the Brassmasters axle jig but another tool won't hurt.

I wouldn't honestly know having bought mine when Adam was a lad.

Bill is hereabouts, maybe a question?

Just found another issue with the kit, SOME MSVs have Timken axleboxes, rather than SKF.

Roughly 70/30 to SKF from a first look, I will see if this is lot specific, but I suspect not.

I would fit some wagons with these.

London Road Models took on the Brassmaster jigs and other bits, the Bill Bedford jigs might get released in the Scalefour stores alongside the W-iron etches (-? speculation on my part, see here)- downside if they do is you will need to be a member.
