RMweb Gold Colin_McLeod Posted July 1 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 1 I have a question about platform canopies. Does the canopy on a curved platform follow the curve of the platform or is it a series of straight canopies, similar to the concept of a curved bridge? I am looking for photos that would show this but I'm having no luck. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Pete the Elaner
My first thought was to use Google Earth & look at Paddington: https://www.google.com/maps/@51.5178913,-0.1784339,130m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu They look curved to me. Sorry, I know that will be more challenging to model.
KeithMacdonald
Waterloo might be a better example? https://www.google.com/maps/@51.502031,-0.1146683,355m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu

A tight curved platform might also have a curved canopy, but a platform with a long gentle curved platform edge would probably be done is a series of straight facets *, which wouldn’t be noticeable. * Facet = series of straight edges Edited July 1 by Damo666

RMweb Gold phil_sutters Posted July 1 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 1 Modern canopies at the outer end of Waterloo look to be a series of straights.
RMweb Gold Colin_McLeod Posted July 2 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 2 Thanks for the replies everyone. The answer seems to be that it can be curved or a series of straights. I'll pass on modelling Waterloo or Paddington! Those platforms at Folkestone appear closer in appearance to the bit of curved platform on my layout so it looks like I'll base my model on that. Series of straights it is then for me. Thanks again.

I haven't see a decent photo of the end of the original Folkestone canopies, (an extension?) they could be curved, if the refurbishment is correct:

RMweb Premium melmerby Posted July 2 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 2 Is that as the original? Most of the canopy & structure has been replaced, including some ironwork on the down platform In fact that curved end is totally wrong: Pre electrification: In fact those at the seaward end are BR.
