Browser Hacking on RMweb

Recommended Posts

  • RMweb Premium

I am accessing RMWeb from a laptop using the touch pad. When I use the touch pad to drag down a page I am frequently (3 times in 5 minutes browsing) being taken to spam websites, the kind that reload a page numerous times so that you cannot go back to RMweb.

This is a work laptop, so I cannot upgrade the security, but it is pretty high, and the websites are frequently flagged for dangerous content.

I am not getting this on other websites. I am also not a premium member as I cannot afford that right now.

It looks the advert overlays are hacking RMweb.

I guess that simple answer is to pay the subscription so that adverts are removed.

Are others experiencing this?

I am paying the subscription and for some reason RMweb, is running very slowly. I suspect the issues have some relationship.

It often does this at certain times, been like it again for few weeks now. I suspect it mainly tied to excess demand over the what the servers can supply combined with updates which often appear to cause issues.

I haven't had any issues at this end to investigate.

Screenshots may be helpful.

It's also worth trying an alternative browser.

Happened to me just now virtually seconds after accessing RMWeb

Yes, these are the same sites I was spammed to. Once more while reading the replies, and once* while typing a response (now being typed in Word as my reply was also wiped).

I am using Firefox. I will give it a try in a different browser and post alter, but have to go out right now.

It has been happening for few days, but is particularly bad today.

It would have been beneficial to know before a bank holiday weekend but I am escalating it now.

Thanks Andy.

It has beceome significantly worse today. They also include this kind of page that tries to trick people into downloading viruses.

It's been escalated as a serious issue. Unfortunately it's not one I can fix at this end.

I may have created an emergency workaround.

Go to the bottom of any page and click on Themes. Select IPS Default.

It's a bare bones version but I'd be interested to know if it gets around the problem.

Plus it will help me hone in on the cause.

Thanks Andy

I jave only had the IPS default on for a minute, but so far it hasn't been hijacked.

That would appear to make it look like it is part of the advertisitng and video overlays, so the hack may be with the advertising links.

Also the adverts today are less than typical for RMweb (from my experince). The below was in the sidebar.

Just to say I like that Theme, but it may not be beneficial for RMweb to promote its existance for obvious reasons.

Thank for looking into this.

Jamie

EDIT - I was pm RMweb 2023 (Default), I have had a quick flock through the other themes, and haven't had the hojacking again. I didn't get it on a brief use of teh 2023 defult this time either.

It won't be related (if you are Gold or Premium).

Thanks Andy. As I was reading your workaround it switched to a pornographic website😮. Have turned on the IPS theme and so far so good👍

Thanks Andy.  That does seem to have fixed it.

It was happening so often I couldn't post because it kept jumping out of and losing anything I typed, especially when I hit the enter button.  Been using this default theme for an hour without any more trouble.  I'm on firefox and W11.

Its been happening since at least wednesday and I posted on thursday I was having issues, initially only on one part of the activity part  section

This morning I did as suggested and switched to the striped down system, not only has it stopped the malware but also speeded up the system, thanks for finding the workaround

I've not seen these "redirected spams" but then again I am gold.

I did check what theme I was using and it seems that I have always been "IPS Default".

But as I said in the other topic you'd posted it in the wrong section. I don't get to read everything all of the time; I do have other work stuff too.

I've never had problems accessing the site via iphone, ipad or Mac. I visit it frequently, and use Chrome on two devices and Safari on another. Whether this is just because I am using Apple products I don't know. I'm not getting any overlays today (I did Friday and before) but haven't done anything differently, or pressed any other buttons on thr site to change the run mode.

Gold and Premium users will get better performance as they don't get Google ads served.

Because, as shown on the header notification on every page, I have changed everyone onto a stripped back version.

Thanks, but I don't mind the Google adds, nothing in life is free, just saying the sites performance has improved
