Dunalastair
Having built a 3D printed foreshortened approximation to the shed in N, in the 'roof covering off' green diesel era, there seem to be many images of the (later) TT side of the shed, but fewer of the coaling end, never mind the inside of the shed or the aspect from the Loch. Of course, the LNER rearranged the shed and changed the TT in the period before you are looking at.

26power
The NLS website might help with mapping, see: https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=18.2&lat=56.82142&lon=-5.10787&layers=258&b=1&o=100
26power
There are a few pictures on the Railscot website which might help, including possibly answering some of your questions: https://www.railscot.co.uk/locations/F/Fort_William_Shed/
Dunalastair
Do we know when (and why) the roof covering was stripped from the shed?

According to the article in Steam Days March 2019 it was "soon" after the winter of 1962/63 although it doesn't give an exact date. Apparently removing the roof saved the payment of rates on the building! Although not specifically answering the OPs request, the March and April 2019 editions of Steam Days magazine both have excellent articles about the locomotives and sheds of the WHL.

Sounds like the practice of bricking up your windows in the good old days to avoid the windows tax!
