Lazonby and Kirkoswald.

After more than 50 years of accumulating stock and planning my layout I now finally have the space, time and Grandson to get started.  I'll be representing Lazonby on the S&C sometime in the late 30's. I have a space 24' x 12' with the scenic section being 3' wide taking up one side and one end of the double garage I'm building it in.  So far i've constructed the open frame benchwork for the scenic section and I've started marking out the trackbed on 9mm ply which will be supported 5 inches higher to allow for the underbridge at the south end of the station and other undulations of the land.  Using artistic License, the northern curve will cross a 6 arch viaduct courtesy of Peco.  Trackwork will be Peco code 75. I'd have liked to use bullhead track but I've been buying for years and have enough code 75 to do the job so changing now would be a financial disaster.  As I've mentioned, the setting is the late 30's so there'll be the usual Oil tank, mixed goods and Milk traffic as well as passenger traffic. However, under Rule 1, as I have quite a large collection of Pacifics, there will be running days when the west coast main line is blocked by landslides etc so the Coronation Scot, Royal Scot and Thames Clyde express trains will be diverted to run on S&C rails.  (dates could well extend to post war to accommodate de-streamlined Duchesses). The photos (if they load show the plan and the work so far)

I decided it would be a good idea to build the road bridge first to give me an idea of how high I need to have the rest of the layout. This is the first scratchbuild I've ever attempted so go easy on the comments. I'm sticking slaters 7mm dressed stone to a 5mm foamboard form. It's not going to be perfect but by the time it's finished and painted / weathered it should look ok. I've used artistic license to reduce the span of the 2 outer arches.  Still have to line the inner and have the buttresses to make ( I realised after getting this far I should have made the trackbed 10cm longer to account for the buttresses - doh! - oh well - Glue :) ). We stopped off in Lazonby to take photos on our way to our usual Grasmere holiday in January - I was surprised at how red the stone is compared to the usual S&C views further south.

A little more work on the bridge. The Abutments are fitted and I've lined the arches. All the edges and gaps will be filled with Milliput and filed to shape before priming.

I also thought I'd position all the points and slips on my plan (along with some old code 100 track from an aborted project 25 years ago) to see how it all lines up.  I'm planning to fully mark up the layout on the lining paper then cut it out to glue to the ply before laying the track. Looking like I'll need 14 point motors just for the scenic section.

Red sandstone is very characteristic of the Eden Valley (not just along the S&C), one of those touches that immediately gives a sense of place just as much as the limestone landscape to the south. It shows up in the nearby parts of the WCML too, such as Penrith station.

Also remember that the Midland did import brick as well as making locally. Look at the difference between occupation bridges and Road bridges. We used both on Horton as a contrast to end the scenic area.

Thanks for the pointers. I spent a couple of hours reading through your thread earlier and have to say it's inspirational. Having come down from ingleborough at least a dozen times you've really captured that view across the station towards Penyghent beautifully.

Thank you for the kind comments re Horton and I am pleased that you like what we have done and even my ramblings 🙂

Best of luck with your own project and I will keep dropping in to see how you are getting on.

Cheers

Mac

Always did wonder why Appleby was built out of brick when all the other stations are the local stone.

The bridge has now been filled and primed. I will be sorting track bed levels next before I add colour to it.

I've been doing a bit of woodwork at the southern end of the layout.  There's a sharp bend that'll be hidden by the cutting and tunnel once I figure out how to build it. I'm planning on stapling chicken wire to the formers to get the land mass shape before covering it. Meanwhile, I'm hoping to have the first section of track laid by sunday.

The first bit of track is down although I've not soldered the droppers to the bus yet.  I'm not happy with the bridge paintjob - too much black  - so I'm going to give it another go once the track I've just glued to it is set.

Lightened the bridge a bit and completed the track over it.  It's still not perfect but at least it'll support a train :)

A bit more woodwork and I'm ready to start the main goods yard board. 10 point motors to fit once the track is laid. Getting the supports in the right places has been a trial 😁

All the cork underlay is now glued down. All the points and slips are ready for droppers but it's the Perth show on Saturday so I doubt I'll be allowed to do any modelling on Sunday. Might be a week till my next update.

Just spent a pleasant couple of hours preparing points and soldering droppers. Still have the 2 slips to do but I need to find a video for that - they're a bit more complicated than a simple turnout.

Turns out there's less to do with the slips than the turnouts. Who knew? Drilling holes and glueing track tomorrow.

Thats the main board trackwork laid apart from the long siding in front of the goods shed which I should get laid tonight. Sets me up nicely for a weekend installing point motors and creating the control panel.

Soldering progresses on the main board. Who was it said DCC only needs 2 wires?

10 dcc concepts IP analog motors fitted and the movement tested/adjusted. I have to wait for a wire delivery before i fit the dc in/out leads to the control board but I still have to make the board anyway so there's no rush 😁

More soldering and a bit of woodwork. I've got half the control panel wired up using DCC concepts switches and LEDs and built a box to hold it. There's still another 7 switches to solder together and still have to bring power cables from every point motor. The fiirst 4 switches are for the board I haven't made yet.
