As an aside, I know of a couple of wonderful European outline model railways where the scenic section is just as @Harlequin has drawn: a single through line. Not suggesting it meets the requirements for this project for @TrainsTim, but could be the basis for a very effective layout for someone who has an interest in scenery and just enjoys watching trains run.
