The tender body was acetate plastic and almost invariably warped so not a great loss, but you'd be on your own for the valve gear. Possibly Dublo or Tri-ang parts could be used. The 2 pole motor is a dead loss. The shorter (14xx 0-4-2T) Airfix 3 pole one will fit. Watch out for the dreaded zinc pest! Or this one is still available https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/256478572468? The lining on the model would need redoing for a start (strictly a Farish G.P.5 should have no lining at all!) A Dublo 8F tender body should be OK, but a bit of filing may be necessary. I didn't realise it was AI though, I just thought it was just someone who couldn't string a few words together properly writing about something they didn't know anything about. Obviously though, two different people wouldn't be able to come up with near identical gibberish. I've got this one - definitely a non runner, as the zinc pest has allowed the tender drawbar to pull off the tender chassis completely, along with the front of the motor drive gubbins. David_Belcher Posted August 21 Share Posted August 21 (edited) Here's my contribution to the topic - it was way too intriguing to resist on *that* well known auction site. Turns out to be a GF body (no zinc pest AFAIK) on a rewheeled Airfix Scot chassis wired to a Rovex 5MT tender (original Fleischmann style with 6 wheel drive). No idea why it doesn't just have the Airfix Stanier tender but there you go! The Farish body is a bit crude admittedly (smoke box door detail is v. sketchy) but is more scale length than Margate's original effort and captures the essence of a Black Five quite well. A bit of attention to the paint plus some extra detail (cab glazing, brake pipes, thicker boiler bands, whistle, improved top feed) helps. Still haven't finished the paint or decals but it's getting there. I also swapped the tender top for an old Mainline one with superior detailing (fits like a glove once you saw the steps & buffer beam off) and had to renew the tender frame as the original was brittle. Thankfully I had a discarded one from a Hornby Ivatt Mogul that's being converted to the 2-6-2 tank version... I can't take any credit for the mechanical side, apart from the new tender frame the chassis/motor is as bought the other week. He mentions that it was a poor seller and shops were carrying large stocks. He went on to say that 'Some say that the motors were unreliable. Indeed in a number of surviving models the original motor has been replaced with a Tri-ang one." "By 1955 few shops were advertising the range. The model passed into history." They certainly could have done - the Formo locomotive had a conventional motor, dunno if it was the basis of the ones that went into the 94xx and the revived Large Prairie.
