Halvarras Posted July 13 Share Posted July 13 I wasn't sure whether to own up to this one, which I did about 40 years ago (can I claim that as a defence?) but here goes anyway..... Both the running number and overall appearance should provide clues as to what I was seeking to achieve with this butchered Hornby Class 110 DMU centre car with the end vestibules chopped off...... The model's interior was sawn up to provide the seats, but I now realise the seat/table ratio is way off. The ends were plasticard of course, and the whole thing was hand-painted with enamels and spray varnished. The donor model was in the refurbished white livery so the white lining was created by first masking this off - the masking tape (Alfac black from Howes, much missed) was sliced into thin strips on a piece of Perspex - the rounded corners were 'fun' - then BR grey applied inside this and BR blue outside. The roof was cleared of rectangular ventilators and cast whitemetal shell type vents added, together with a kitchen vent using the buffer head from a broken plastic MTK Oleo buffer. The bogies are Lima B1s fitted with PECO 12mm plastic wheels, which fitted straight in and run very true even if they are the dreaded plastic (I tried 14mm but had clearance/ride height issues). The bogie pivots are floor sections cut from a spare Lima Class 117 DMU chassis and embedded in the Hornby underframe. The shortened overall wheelbase required a couple of underfloor items to be sawn off and repositioned to clear the bogies, and the dynamo is a whitemetal detail part, can't remember the origin now (frankly I'm surprised I can remember most of this!) Yes I know, it was a considerable amount of work to produce a freelance model, even if based on a real vehicle, hence my initial doubt about owning up to this, but there it is anyway. It served a purpose for a while, until I got around to fashioning something better from Tri-ang Mark 1 buffet car parts..... ......all I have to do (and all I've had to do for quite a few years now - long story) is paint the thing! Ben B Posted July 16 Share Posted July 16 Given that a lot of my model-making with railways over the years has been for unusual art projects rather than 'proper' railway models... how about something a bit Steampunk? Monorail, first off... modified Dapol City of Truro on a working N gauge chassis... I did a project for Bradford Industrial Museum over a decade ago, creating photoshops of scenes around Bradford with Steampunk elements inserted. I built all the miniatures to photograph as separate items and drop in. I revisited it for the last of the Cakebox calls here on RMWeb, working this time in 0. And finally; The Jabberwock. This was a rather convoluted project, dating back to a third-scale sculpture I built for an Alice in Wonderland-themed arts trail at Rydal Hall, Ambleside. The idea was how a machine might look suitably monster-like to an animal or creature that had never seen something like a locomotive before (inspired by a quote from HG Wells in 'War of the Worlds'). Given there is a passing mention of a train in 'Through the Looking Glass' I interpreted the Jabberwock as a self-propelled logging crane-locomotive that, from the right angle, looked a bit like a monster. I'd built some mock-ups to test the concept, and with a G scale garden railway under development, I thought I'd build the Jabberwock. No twee little Welsh tank locomotives on my line... The garden line's been scrapped, but the Jabberwock is going on display on the shelf when we move house :) I've some other arty model making, I'll post the pics when I find where they're archived. 6 2 3 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Speaking of journeys, a sculpture build that I was working on (pics above and below show it under construction) for a Journey-themed gallery open call, Manchester I think, about 8 years ago. I ended up finishing it, it's on the wall now at home (or was, I've taken it down and packed it up ready to move house). And finally, something a bit more science fiction. These were concepts for a joint illustration project I was doing with a mate. The idea was a post-disaster society where some unspecified catastrophe had occurred. The main characters were a group of officially-sanctioned artists on the "Observe to Preserve Project", painting, photographing, and documenting the post-apocalyptic world for whoever came next, clad in haz-mat suits to protect them from whatever had happened. As you might imagine, we abandoned the project in 2020 for painfully-obvious reasons... The railcar was meant to be a kind of mobile studio, and this was the first test-build, in 1/32nd scale, with bits of toy tank and bulldozers, and a Ferrero Roche box for the studio itself. 9 1 4 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Some real 'outside the box' railway modelling there! For some reason those latter scenes remind me of the 1983 movie 'Spacehunter - Adventures in the Forbidden Zone' starring Peter Strauss and Molly Ringwald (I'd be interested to know if anyone's ever heard of it?!)
