Nobby (John)
It’s that time to start to tease you all with some photos of the layouts that will be appearing this year at the UK’s premier show for “ modern image “ modellers. DEMU Showcase 2024 will be at Sutton Coldfield Town Hall on June 15/16th. This year the exhibition will be even bigger with addition of a 3rd hall at the venue bringing you even more layouts and specialist traders for you all to enjoy. More details to follow soon. The first layout to be announced is the wonderful replication of the Derby Railway Technical Centre (RTC) Deadmans Lane built by the well known modeller of everything “Yellow” Mick Bryan. Photos are reproduced by kind permission of Karl Crowther (Railway Modeller)

Nobby (John)
Another little teaser for the forthcoming Showcase in June. Waddon Marsh is a real place on a loop line near Croydon in South London. The line was a freight line serving Croydon Power Station and the passenger service was limited to 2 car EMUs. Some stock passed the site on ECS and reversing moves but essentially Waddon Marsh was a bit of a back water by 3rd rail South London standards. Regular visitors to Showcsse will know that this layout has attended in the past, however this year you will be able to see it in an extended version. Owned and operated by SEDG. To be pedantic, the line serving Waddon Marsh was not really a freight line. It was a link between West Croydon and Wimbledon, following, for part of its route, the line of the Surrey Iron Railway, one of the earliest public railways in England, in 1855, and would have been primarily passenger orientated. The industry that built up around Waddon Marsh was a turn-of-the-century development, and Waddon Marsh station itself only opened in 1930 following electrification of the line. Admittedly, the passenger traffic was fairly minimal, and, until the sixties, there was plenty of freight traffic serving the large gas works and electricity power station as well as the numerous factories and foundries set up either side of the tracks, requiring three running tracks for some distance from north of the station platform. 1
Nobby (John)
Another little teaser for you all, especially those who like “Yellow Machines” and we certainly know a few ………. Deadmans Lane, by Mick Bryan will certainly entertain those who have an interest in departmental stock as well as the trains both freight and passenger that regularly trundle up and down the main lines.
Shaun66
Looking forward to the show as always being a modern image modeller, and always great to see Deadmans Lane. Can't wait to see the rest of the line up for this year.

Chris H That is surprising giving the increase in o gauge over the last 5 or so years with Dapol and Heljan now producing plenty of stock for a non modeller like myself. I suppose by suitable most tend to be too big? I'm quite happy with my new 12 x 1 ft stabing point layout. Plenty of moving trains and in my opinion a decent level of layout worthy of being shown. Hopefully it and more so I ( health) will make it to Porthcawl in August for its maiden outing.

Hopefully it and more so I ( health) will make it to Porthcawl in August for its maiden outing. I imagine size plays a part - don't think DMU have the space for Eastfield or Heaton Lodge, well maybe Eastfield but then they might lose a lot of space for other layouts. I think there is Allerby which would be suitable for DEMU, perhaps next year if they are available and DEMU ask. There's not much N gauge either which arguably is very suited to the modern scene with long trains and plenty of these about too suitable for a DEMU. But at the end of the day the organisers try hard to find a mix of scales and eras as mid 1960s to present day is quite a window of eras now. The list for this year looks quite good and it doesn't bother me if it's not full of my scale, good modelling is not specific to any scale. 1
