I've recommended a lens hood to Gilbert before; something I always use when shooting against the light.

A last look at Victor Wild.

More flare, but with the light behind this time.

 

Running along the locomotive road is the J3 New England for got to send to Doncaster for scrapping four years ago. It is off to Ramsey to do some shunting, a job it will have done many times during its long and overextended life.

The J3 heads towards the Up main, and its shortish trip down to Holme.

Behind it is the 9.55 Newcastle -KX, but the J3 has a bit of a start, as it is through the station five minutes before the express is due, and it then has a six minute stop. Time for an engine change should I so wish. I don't know whether there was one. Anyway, here comes Sir Walter Scott.

On Tuesday I received my latest goodie from Steve@31a, but haven't photographed it until now, as the light was so poor it would not have done it justice.

 

The idea was to give him something fairly simple after the trauma of a number of all door seconds, but it didn't quite work out that way. I will leave it to Steve to tell you why, and to give construction details. Beautiful subtle weathering, and a great addition to the layout.

I built a pair of these vans, one for Gilbert and one for myself.  They were pretty straightforward, but when it came to door details it dawned on me that these vans actually had more doors than the "All Door" Corridor Seconds I'd made previously (albeit with fewer droplights)!  If anyone's interested in how I built it, I've described it on my layout thread from Page 45 onwards:

Our last look at Sir Walter is from Crescent Bridge.

Soon afterwards the A1 is followed by the Colwick-KX Goods Class D, 61177 working through, as the pictures I have seen suggest happened.

Soon afterwards, immaculate Grantham A3 Enterprise runs through with the Northumbrian.

A starring role then for the lady in the spotted dress, as the photographer didn't quite let the A3 emerge far enough from the gloom.

Time for a local from Louth, and once again it is an A5 and three non corridor coaches, as it had been for many years.

If this had been a DMU turn, it would have reversed across and parked itself in number 5 bay. But it isn't, so the A5 has gone of to New England, and the C12 has backed on, ready to get the stock out of the way.

Something is signalled on the main, but no sign of it yet, so we will have another look at the C12. Such a lovely little engine.

We also now have a B17 standing by the coaling stage, so that's two of my top favourites almost together.

I do feel that one of the tests of the authenticity of a layout is an image taken when nothing is actually happening. We have the resting C12 to look at, and the B17 in the distance, but essentially this is the north end of the station area with nothing actually happening.

Nothing happening soon ceases however, as a well kept KX V2 comes through with the Aberdeen fish empties.

Fish vans. Some of these are ancient, Wrenn if my memory serves. I forgot all about them until I discovered recently that a cassette I thought was empty, wasn't. Here some of them are. Some of my earliest attempts at weathering, a bit cringe making really, and by 1958 all the vans for Aberdeen should be blue spot, but never mind, it gives me another train to find employment for underused locos.

 

It was soon followed by the FO 1230 KX-Newcastle seen about to pass under the bridge. It turns out that KX duty 37 did come up quite soon, so here is Flying Scotsman's running debut on PN.

Back in 1958, Flying Scotsman would have passed through almost unnoticed, just another regular sight when we were hoping for something from 52B. I don't think the shouts of "scrap it" had begun by then, nor in all probability did we realise what distinguished it from almost all the others of the class. One more camaeraman did think it was worth a shot though.

It seems that someone has been granted "special access" in order to get this rear three quarter view of Champion Lodge.

Can't be all that special though surely, when just about every documentary film presenter seems to have it.

Now we have the Up Fair Maid, for which Gateshead has, very unusually, turned out an A2/3. Was it booked for the job, or was it a late substitution? We shall never know.

 

I left this as a apnorama, instead of cropping to the end of the bridge as I usually do. I don't think it looks that bad. The next one is a tried and trusted shot.

And the C12 wanted to be in another shot as well.

So how did I get image before text? Dunno. Pretty self explanatory anyway. I left the hanging end of the bridge again as I wanted to include the C12.

Two rare Tyneside  A2/3s in the space of a few minutes. This time it is Heaton's 60517, reversing along the engine road. It will be taking over the Heart of Midlothian.

A WR-allocated, brand new Hornby 9F.

I don't have DCC, of course, and this loco (being DCC-fitted and also sound-fitted) won't work on Little Bytham.

 

The moving footage turned out fine!
