RMweb Premium great northern Posted January 17, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 17, 2023 A very different day. I resolved to get on with things, and managed to get into the railway room by 1000. There, I was doubly rewarded when I tackled the macros again. Firstly, I stopped rushing it, and remembered how to do it correctly. Why I didn't read the instructions first when it was 11 years since I last did them, I do not know. Second, all those macros were done BC, which in this case means before cassettes, which meant that as I got towards the higher numbers I found that some were unnecessary. Anyway, all done quite quickly. There will be mistakes, in fact I've found one already, but now I remember exactly how to proceed, it will only be a few minures work to deal with each one as it arises. A well deserved mug of tea, then back up again to photograph the goodies, and after that a good running session, with things appearing to work better than before the EPROM went in. After lunch I needed to go to the village to get repeat prescriptions, and as it is such a lovely day I walked, got 4.2 miles on the smart watch, and all in all am well pleased. Goodies to follow soon. 3

On the bright side it is worth noting about Digitrains suggesting that Scanning 'possibility' thing. They at least could send stuff in an anti scan pack. Worth announcing the 'possibility' elsewhere G? Spread the word of the 'possibility'. I keep saying 'possibility' as there are some on certain parts of RMW that will deny any such thing can ever occur and you are wrong and that DCC is the Spawn of Belezebub etc. My Power Cab continues to potter on, but as you may remember I have Analogue and Digitalis Fingerpokin Route Setting (apart from those Froggy Things at Fiddle Yard X Overs etc.) Have a good day and thanks for the update. Hope Timara a was OK and that you complete your reprogramming successfully. P That was the only thing the guys at Digitrains could think of, but of course it might just have been a dud one anyway, so perhaps best left as it is. Timara was nearly OK. Unfortunately, while I was out she stood on my small folding steps, and they broke, so she had a fall. A couple of minor cuts, but nothing too serious, fortunately. Reprogramming was indeed completed, the old adage more haste less speed being proved correct yet again.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted January 17, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 17, 2023 OK, goodies now. Those of you who pay attention will remember that I did a recent swop with Phil the duck, and acquired an A1 which cost me nowt. Off it went to Timara, as a gleaming 60157. Now I already have one of those, so a new identity was needed, and I decided that another very common engine, 60125 Scottish Union, was the one I wanted. It had been a KX engine till Jan 58, but then went to Doncaster, so plenty of time to get very dirty, especially as by August it was due for shops within a few weeks. According to Yeadon it was last ex works on 29/3/57, and so should have carried late crest. However, Timara and I found a number of dated photos which clearly showed early crest, so this seems to be one of the occasional times when Yeadon is wrong. So here it is. The next one is not new, but reached the top of the list for a Timara upgrade. An interesting little story here, as in July 58 Tracery acquired a double chimney on a visit to Doncaster for a casual repair. Not one other A3 got that preferential treatment, all having to wait until they were due for general overhaul. One wonders whether a request for special treatment was successfully made, and on what basis. Tracery was the second highest mileage A3, the highest being Flying Fox, which lasted a couple of years longer. 59 seems to have been a very well regarded engine, so was that why it was allowed to jump the queue? We shall never know, but what is certain is that it was by no means in normal Top Shed condition. In Book of the Great Northern Part 1 there is an image taken by Peter Coster showing the engine to be dirty. Apparently the driver thought it had just come out from a general overhaul because of the way it behaved. So, I sent Timara a copy of that image plus a couple of others from the right period. In the end though, it finished up even more dirty than we had intended, as some of the original weathering applied years ago refused to come off, or took lining with it if it did. As usual, I'll leave Timara to give more detail if she so wishes. 29 1 3
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted January 17, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 17, 2023 One more look at our lovely D16, as it starts away towards March. A very satisfying day to follow a very stressful one. What will tomorrow bring, I wonder? Apart from an Ocado delivery. 34
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted January 18, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 18, 2023 Another lovely and sunny but very cold day, so I shall be running more trains, and no doubt correcting some dubious route settings. The D16 was timetabled to leave for March at 5.13pm, and no doubt was hastened on its way, as a Grantham-KX was due to stop just two minutes later. This was one of those slow stopping ttrains, and had already been allowed 63 minutes for the 29 miles from Grantham. However, Enterprise will no doubt be returning home later with one of thr late evening expresses. So here it is running in.. and soon afterwards occupying the spot just vacated by the Claud.

Whilst nuanced may sound a bit OTT in connection with our hobby I think applied to weathering it is appropriate. Heavily weathered loco's but with much local variation. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted January 18, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 18, 2023 A close up of Enterprise. and the appearance of another EE type4 with the 3.52 KX-Newcastle. Another benefit from the bridge extension and Station Road appears to me to be that the bowstring girder part of the bridge now appears to be a bit longer, and thus lower. We could not avoid compression in width of the whole thing, so anything that makes that a bit less obvious is very welcome. 31 1

RMweb Premium great northern Posted January 19, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 19, 2023 Now, I think I must step in here with a plea for understanding for Clive. It is not his fault that his upbringing was blighted by the disappearance of all the lovely steam locomotives, and that he was left with nothing to watch but diesels, and all boring blue by that time too. In fact, he has done remarkably well to overcome these difficulties, and to become the dear chap we all know and love today. 1 1 1 2 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted January 19, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 19, 2023 (edited) Another Class C on the Down slow, and again bound for Niddrie, but this one started from Clarence Yard, and has a KX V2 rather than an A4. It will shortly be passing this Ivatt 4, which is on a service to Kings Lynn that uses ex LMS stock. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted January 20, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 20, 2023 Time for one photo, as I have to go for a haircut, and then prepare for a visit by TW. V2 now nearly up to the signal, but if the driver was hoping to get the road he will be disappointed, as the Cleethorpes is about ready to leave.
