The wall on the right, what was it originally?

The supporting wall for a roof over the Arcade sidings.

heavily cropped picture used for research purposes. To the right on the original is a 9F hauled goods, so the structure was intact until the mid 50s. I've never been able to find out exactly when and why the roof came off, taking some brickwork with it, or why nothing much was done to clear up the resulting mess. I suspect that as one of the many modernisation projects that were proposed over the years was under discussion at the time, it was felt that money shouldn't be wasted when the whole thing was going to come down "shortly". Shortly turned out to be more than ten years ahead.

Planning blight was ever the enemy of BR achievement.

But it goes back much further at PN Ian. Crescent Bridge was started in 1911 and finished by 1913, aligned for the straightened main lines which were planned..... and arrived about 60 years later. In fairness, the GN and particularly the LNER's chronic lack of cash also had something to do with it.

I think the lighting's really good on this morning's pictures Gilbert, especially the first one.  The new buildings make a good backdrop to shots from that angle, too!
