As it happens, at the end of the sequence I did a few plonks, so it will be interesting to see how often Kevin and I spotted the same photo opportunities. I've already found one. Anyway, here are a couple to buy me some time to photoshop new stuff.

Enough of plonks for now. Instead we shall start a brand new day. On Saturdays the Glasgow-Colchester ran a few minutes earlier, so it only just after 7am when that very work stained Gateshead A3 appears.

 

 

A very gloomy day this, so all taken under lights, as were KNP's . For some reason I got a pink cast to some of mine, so a lot of juggling with colour tone and saturation finished up with this.

 

Shortly afterwards, the stock for the 7.35 Parliamentary to Doncaster was brought into Platform 6 by Thane of Fife.

The Gasgow-Colchester is a shorter train on Saturdays, so Gladiateur only has to come just far enough to avoid putting even more smoke under the roof.

 

 

A few minutes later it has been replaced by Brancepeth Castle, which will take the train on , but probably no further than Cambridge.

I am surprised how much difference in appearance there is between two different cameras and photographers.  Not better nor worse, just different.  But KNP's side on shot of the B1 is sublime.

No doubt much to the relief of the operating department, the main line pilot was not called into action, and continued to rest quietly all day long.

 

 

What could be better than a picture of a pilot? Two of them?

I don't have the appropriate Yeadon volume for the B17s. Can anyone think of a good excuse for running 'Brancepeth Castle' on my railway?

 

Physically close to the Durham-Bishop Auckland line and almost (when the leaves fall) in sight of the said castle.

 

Running in turn perhaps?

It had overhauls at Darlington during the war, and between August and early October 1949, so running in turns look OK then. After that though, shedded at March or Cambridge, and overhauled at Doncaster, so very unlikely to have got that far north. It was at GER sheds all its life I'm afraid.

No complaints about Gilbert’s photography as he consistently produces superb images but it’s nice to see someone else’s view of a stunning model railway layout.

Striving to outdo Gateshead in standards of filth, one of our local V2s crawls along the Up slow, having just taken over a Niddrie to KX Goods Class C.

 

 

 

There is a pink cast to this, which I can't totally remove. I've worked out what caused it though, so it should not recur.

 

This V2 is on the slow because the platfrom road is occupied by another, much cleaner local V2, which has brought in the stock for the 7.25 stopper to KX.

Next is the 7.30 Grantham-KX, a job for one of Grantham's own A3s. Pretty Polly this time. There has been a 44 minute gap between trains on the Up, but that won't happen again for many hours to come.

 

 

Coming down, we have one of the last of the overnight stream of coal empties. WD on the slow as usual.

Following nine minutes behind the WD, here is the last load of empties, this one running Class F on the accelerated schedule designed for 9F haulage.

 

 

 

Seen drawing in at Platform 6 in the last image, KX V2 60862 has now stopped with the 5.50 KX-Grantham slow.

While the V2 rests at Platform 6, the Hull fish empties clatter through on the Main.

 

 

 

 

 

An unusual experience today. I had to visit the hospital to have a check to see if the nasties that were removed in January had made a comeback.  Appointment was 3pm, and I arrived at 2.50 and settled in for the usual wait. Called within three minutes, given the all clear within a few more, and back out in the open again two minutes before my notional appointment time. Only another six visits to go now. Over ten miles walking done today, so thoughts of bed are getting stronger by the minute.

I know that these pictures of your latest (and last?) pacifics were a while ago but I have been living it up in Italia with Mrs B for almost three weeks, we had great time which included a couple of trips on Frecciarossa train sets which were very good at 260Km/hour.

 

60032 and 60063 look absolutely brilliant, a tribute to Tim's work and the photographer. In particular, i really like the logic behind Gannet's grubby condition, it just seems very sensible. Seems like not everyone has been very sensible whilst we were away, glad we have lots of Euro's left.......
