RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 12, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 12, 2022 On goes the Heart of Midlothian in disguise. Followed eight minutes later by another Doncaster -KX. headed by Doncaster's own A3 Tagalie. Tim here shortly and there are goodies. 30
Woodcock29
Two of my favourite A3s. Thanks Gilbert. I also have BR models of both despite the fact I mainly model 1930s! I've also got an LNER version of Galtee More as Dad took me onto her footplate at KX not long before she was withdrawn. Andrew

It does seem that anything that didn't originate from "their" railway was viewed with suspicion, and of course the Std 5 was based on an LMS design. The point about spares is a valid one though.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 12, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 12, 2022 Time to reveal goodies, two of them today. The first of them is not a totally new addition to the fleet, but an amalgamation of two I already had, those being Gannet and Golden Eagle. Both were chosen partly because I like the names, but there has always been in the background the uncomfortable knowledge that both were wrong for August 1958, when Golden Eagle was in bits in Doncaster works, and Gannet had a single chimney, while mine had a double. I tried to convince myself that I've said that I will stretch to February 59, but it kept nagging away at me, as did the fact that both had weathering jobs that fell well below Tim's work. So, some swapping about has occurred, and here is Gannet in its new guise. By August 58 she did have a red backed nameplate, but was one of Top Shed's last two single blast engines, with a high mileage, and only a few weeks away from going in for a general. Not a top link engine then, and lower down the pecking order for cleaners, so that was Tim's brief for the weathering job, which he has done exacly as I envisaged. Very poor light today, so artificial light was needed and these photos don't do it full justice. What happened to the other parts of the two locos, I hear you ask? Or maybe not, but I shall tell you. They went to Sir Ronald Matthews, which engine you saw on here a few weeks ago. Now the second goodie, which is a new addition. Some time back I saw a Hornby A3 Coronach brand new on E Bay, and at a very good price. It has one of Hornby's best attempts at BR Green. Well, you can't say no, can you? So I bought it. It has a double chimney and an A4 Dia 107 boiler, but I thought I could easily get round that. I have enough double chimney A3s, as there weren't many by August 58, and of those there were quite a lot were NE or Scottish engines. All I had to do was find a GN engine with single chimney and A4 boiler that I don't already have. It turned out to be far from easy though, and in the end the only real candidate was 60063, a Grantham engine. Again it had been out from shops for quite a while, so would not be as clean as some of that shed's engines. Pictures taken at the relevant time turned out to be elusive, so I found a good colour image of another engine which I felt looked about right, and asked Tim to do it like that, which of course he did perfectly. and that folks will be nearly the end of new Pacifics on PN, as I have neither the space to store them when not in use, nor the duties for them to perform. 30 4

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 13, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 13, 2022 Tagalie has only eight on, and so stops closer to the roof than normal, which means the man on the loading dock can get this view. Tagalie was rapidly followed by 61130 on the first New Clee fish.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 13, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 13, 2022 On comes 61130, and passes North box. Just four minutes later the 5.10 Up Leeds is coming in. Golden Fleece was until recently Top shed's choice for the Elizabethan, and that shine has been maintained. 30
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 14, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 14, 2022 Any camera will naturally focus on a very shiny A4. 27
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 14, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 14, 2022 Platform 6 is now occupied by an East to Leicester train that stops from 8.24 to 8.35. Apparently this train was often double headed, and there is a contemporary record of it being triple headed on at least one occasion in 1958. Tonight one engine will do, as that saves me having to remember how to set up consists. The second image is, I think, vastly preferable. 31
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 15, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 15, 2022 A couple of shots showing Golden Fleece moving off under Crescent Bridge. Despite trying every adjustment of the blinds I could think of, I couldn't get rid of the shine on the tender. I blame the cleaners at KX.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 15, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 15, 2022 A hopeful shot againt the evening light, as the Compound heads back to Midland metals. 61282 is a regular on the lunchtime slow to KX, and an early evening return. On Saturdays though, no doubt owing to congestion at KX, the return journey started at Broad Street. If on time, the B1 has taken 160 minutes for the 76 mile journey.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 16, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 16, 2022 Nearly 8.30pm now, but the lady is still here. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 16, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 16, 2022 The 5.05 Newcastle-KX brings another local engine running through non stop to KX. Mons Meg this time. This was taken on the 8th, after which I stopped playing trains, and left it where it was. The following day was not good for photography, but in the evening I decided to go and see what images taken after dark might look like now I have the new lighting. I never could stand the results with fluorescent lights, but here is what I got this time. The first one was taken using the daylight setting, as I normally do, but for the second I tried the daylight fluorescent one, which I haven't had reason to use before. I thought this might be no good with LED lighting, but got a surprise. Here are the two, daylight setting first, daylight fluorescent second. I can't make my mind up which I prefer. What do you think? Either way, I now think that evening photo sessions are more likely in future.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 17, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 17, 2022 The 7.35 KX-Aberdeen conveys sleeping cars, but second class only on Saturdays. Seagull brings it through. I've been trying to get this going away shot to my satisfaction for ages. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 19, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 19, 2022 The fish heads on past North box. It will shortly pass another B1, one of New England's shabbier examples, which has brought in the stock for the 9.05pm to Grimsby. There is an 1105pm departure for stations to Boston, but for anywhere north of there, this is the last chance to get home by train. Must get on now, as I have a visitor to the layout today. 29
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 19, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 19, 2022 60001 has backed down the engine road, and will cross to wait in the bay. soon afterwards, Cambridge B2 Framlingham arrives with the Colchester-Glasgow, which Sir Ronald will take on as far as Newcastle. The arrival of this train heralds the end of another day at PN, and indeed there are only a few more movements to record now. I have decided that it will be Saturday again when the new sequence begins, hoping to learn from the errors I found this time, and to set everything up properly before starting, which I was too idle to do this time.
