RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 6, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 6, 2022 An Immingham B1 has arrived with a a stopper from Grimsby, and is seen from beyond Crescent Bridge. Then we have the arrival of the 5.23 slow from KX, which was overtaken on its journey by the V2 previously seen on the 5.52 Leeds. This is, for me, as good as it gets. A well cleaned A3 at Platform 6 has to be the combination that gives my favourite shot anywhere on the layout. 37
geoff west
Exciting times Gilbert, I shall look forward to another visit at some point, if that’s okay with you? May even have some exciting news myself regarding Sleaford. I’m with you on the picture of a clean A3 at platform 6. Wonderful.

At that age, I think you are absolutely correct. I don't think I started even recording numbers of goods engines till I was about 13. B1s may have gone in the book before that though. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 7, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 7, 2022 Just had a heron in my garden. Magnificent bird, but I wish it hadn't been eating one of my goldfish. Chased it off, but it will be back. More of the B1, conveying fish, but not consuming them. 27 1
RMweb Premium 30368 Posted September 7, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 7, 2022 Two very wonderful images, my particular favourite is the first one with the shadow limiting our view of the valve gear and other detail. This is often the case when searching for some good images for loco modelling. The second image also captures very well the sense of great depth with the bright light at the other end of the station. We had a lovely trout stream in our front garden when we lived in Wiltshire, our bane was the local Avocet that had a real liking for young trout. The fly fishers at the ponds served by the stream became very tense. I didn't think there was much I could do about it not really being a hunting, fishing type of person. A picture of our entry into the village scare-crow competition - we won that year with Miss O. Very romantic... Very sorry Gilbert for the diversion, what's this got to do with Peterborough and the ECML? Kind regards, Richard B 8
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 7, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 7, 2022 Heron came back about 7pm, and we had a half hour stand off, and it gave up. I don't know why I bothered though, as it will have a couple of hours for breakfast before I surface. Following the fish came our very recently ex works A2/3, which has been rostered for the 1.10 Up Edinburgh, due through at 7.53. 27
RMweb Gold Graham T Posted September 7, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 7, 2022 Ref the heron, you could try putting some wires or netting over your pond. But I know from experience that herons are pretty persistent once they find a tasty supply of captive fish, unfortunately.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 8, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 8, 2022 Got up early, drew curtains, heron flew off. It hasn't come back, so will have had its fill for the time being. No easy pickings for them at PN, as I shall make sure there are no ponds in the gardens of Station Road. 60514 carries on its way, and the regulator will have been opened. Another of our favourites has arrived at Platform 6 with the shuttle.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 9, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 9, 2022 A pause for reflection, at a very sad time. One of my earliest clear memories, at the age of six, is that of our Infant school headmistress coming into the classroom in the middle of a lesson, and telling us that the King had died, and we now have Queen Elizabeth. I suppose I didn't understand the importance of that much at the time, nor could I have thought that she would be a part of my life for the next seventy years. The news of her death hit me harder than I anticipated, and brought home to me what a symbol of decency and stability she has been for all those years. God Bless the Queen. Life must resume, so here , in the seventh year of the new Elizabethan age, is a D11 arriving with the last local of the day from Grimsby. 27 2

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 11, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 11, 2022 We now have a Hitchin to Colwick Class D goods, for which I roster one of 34As three Standard 5s. Whether they actually did work such trains I do not know, and the only photo I have found of one at Peterborough was on an Up coal train. I believe they were used on outer suburban and Cambridge trains, and they were transferred away in October 58 anyway, so mine will be leaving too, and moving to Southern climes. Here then are the last images of it at PN.

You need a plastic heron - herons are very territorial and aggressive - a plastic heron convinces the real one that the pond is 'taken'. Works for several of my neighbours who have very expensive fish ponds.

The RSPB website states "a plastic heron will more likely attract other herons rather that deter them". Having said that, obviously I'm pleased to hear that it works for some people.
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted September 11, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 11, 2022 The (sadly) late Gordon S of this parish fought a doughty fight with herons in his garden. Wire netting, lights, decoys - everything short of guns. And still they often scored a fish or two. 1

I surmise that if it did happen it was not judged to be a success, and was a short lived experiment. My other reservation would be that these were Immingham loco duties, and crewed by Immingham and Boston men, who, I am sure, would have made a great fuss if their most prestigious duties were handed over to Kings Cross. I can find no record of a Std 5 being allocated to Immingham, even for a short time. All 1958 photos I've seen show Immingham B1s, so following my usual principles I stick to that. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 11, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 11, 2022 It is very rare for me to be able to tell you the names of any of the crews bringing trains through PN, but on this occasion I can. Here comes Grantham A3 Galtee More. It is on the Heart of Midlothian, though the headboard would have you believe that it is on the Flying Scotsman, which passed through some hours ago. Fireman Magoo is the person responsible, though how he found both headboards together I do not know. Rather strange that it is a much nicer evening from this side than it was from the other. 28
Pilgrim in France
I am certain I have seen it somewhere as it resulted in me buying a Standard 5 to use on my layout which was based on Boston. I will delve into the archives to see if I still have it but that is easier said than done. 1
manna
G'day Folks Told by some of the crews that worked on them, that they were no improvement on a B1 and the spares they had to carry at Top shed meant it was a good idea to get rid of them. manna
