My WTT shows a Class C to Niddrie in the same path Jonathan, so I assumed it was.

You may well be right - it just happened that I had the LNER Society Journal this morning with an article by Owen Russell about the early days of the V2s and he explicitly stated that it did not run on Saturdays.   I'm taking him at face value, of course and there are 20 years there for the timetable or operating requirements to change, it just chimed at once, being fresh in my mind, when I saw your post.

The 3.40 KX-Newcastle runs non stop under Crescent Bridge, Silver King being a rare sighting in daylight hours.

 

 

It would be nice if this was a cop for the lady in the spotted dress, wouldn't it? She's been standing there for hours watching all the common stuuf pass by. She's not jumping about though, but I suppose that may be because she can't. She could spin round if someone gave her a twirl though. I'm sure that porter would oblige,

On goes Silver King, while Andrew K Mc Cosh waits for an opportunity to cross into Westwood sidings, and have its wagons examined.

 

 

Under the roof, 61643 waits for passengers for the 5.13 to March.

A strange service next on the Up, a Grantham-KX, just six cars behind the tender. It stopped at every station between Grantham and Peterborough, including Great Ponton and Tallington, which rarely saw a stopping train. So, good news for the people of those villages, who could now get to Peterborough for 5.15pm, just as the shops shut. Mind you, they'd be able to go to the cinema, or have a few drinks. The bad news though is there was no way to get home that day. Here it is pulling into the station.

 

 

From here it will stop at some stations to Hitchin, and stand there for eleven minutes before putting up Class A lights for the rest of the journey to KX. I'm not sure why, as it was diverted to the slow line twice on its way, and took 73 minutes for the 32 miles. Signals are off on the Down main, as the 3.52 KX-Newcastle is on the way through.

 

 

Modernisation again, and the second Newcastle departure from the Cross in twelve minutes.

While the B1 was approaching very slowly in preparation for the stop, the diesel was whistling along at 20mph, and thus we get this shot.

They soon were though Steve. There are comments in the contemporary magazines complaining that they were a poor advert for modernisation, and I can remember seeing them absolutely filthy.

 

D209 is a TMC limited edition from back in the days when a day with a temperature of 30c was considered to be scorchio, and made the news headlines. Clive has told me what is wrong with it as a model, and I know that it didn't come into service till October 58, and so is wrong for the summer timetable. Something may, or may not, be done about this in due course.

Our man on the loading dock can now get better pictures into the light. New filter, perhaps. Anyway, he took this picture of 61074 waiting to leave.

 

 

Some seven minutes after the 3.52 Newcastle came through, a nicely kept Immingham B1 is routed into Platform 6 with a Cleethorpes express, which was also timed to leave KX at 3.52. Both are shown on the WTT as running fast line from KX. The Newcastle ran as required, so no doubt someone sorted things out when it was.

We have a view along the forecourt. With the overhead lights on, this proved to be a tricky one to process, involving drawing lots of freehand erasure lines along the outlines of buildings. Not easy, so I hope you enjoy it.

 

 

Back to the trains, and a very dirty local V2 coming under Crescent Bridge with a Clarence Yard to Niddrie Class C.

I don't know why I didn't bin this one, it is awful.

As one who has lived in Peterborough for some 60+ years, I am constantly amazed, by the buildings on the layout. Yes, the trains are impressive, but I can imagine being back boarding a train to Manton  junction (near Oakham, IIRC) on a lads’ train spotting day out. And this forecourt photo reminds of attending discos in the early 70s at the George Hotel (now demolished), the smaller neighbour of the Great Northern, and probably close to where the camera is in this shot.

They certainly were filthy at Stratford . I’ve even seen one arrive at LiverpoolSt from Norwich with a pot of paint thrown over the side ! Probably by some disgruntled spotter who was hoping to see  Clive Of India  hammering through Diss at nearly 100 mph .Nothing was loved and cared for at Stratford although the Brits looked better when they sent them all to Norwich.😄
