RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted August 11, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 11, 2022 While we are up here, might as well circle round a bit more, and have another look at the D16. and the B1 wants another look in too, though this one needed a lot of croppping.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted August 11, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 11, 2022 Four and a half mile walk completed before it got too hot, so I have already hit my five mile/10000 steps target for the day, thus putting me in a benevolent state of mind. That is enough to give you a couple of bonus plonks. 32

RMweb Premium thegreenhowards Posted August 12, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 12, 2022 What a lovely mixed formation the Norseman was. Two Restaurant cars is a bit unusual isn’t it? Thanks for sharing. Andy
jwealleans
Not uncommon but unique to the ECML, I believe. Restaurant First with the main kitchen and 18 posh dining places, then a Pantry Third with limited food storage and heating capacity and ~32 seats for the hoi polloi. I'm sure there was a logic to which trains had this and which had the RF/TO combination, but I'm not aware of what it was. You'll note that they're marshalled so the pantry and kitchen are next to each other, presumably for the convenience of the staff. 2
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted August 13, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 13, 2022 4.45pm, assuming things are running to time, so 61207 can get on its way to Grimsby. Two minutes later Diamond Jubilee arrives with the 3.18 KX-Leeds. No connection for the E.Lincs there, but the preceding 3.08 Newcastle would have allowed a comfortable transfer, if things were running to time. 60046 has 13 on, and has pulled up well clear of the end of the platform.

Two Restaurant cars is a bit unusual isn’t it? Thanks for sharing. Andy It was an unusual train, and varied in its formation depending on the day of the week. Eight cars minimum, rising to 10 own on a Saturday, when the Up train which has just featured had twelve. Whatever the load though, that FO RF RSP catering was included. The one I just ran had the BSK SK7x2 CK attached at Newcastle, the rest being the usual eight cars from Tyne Commission Quay. I assume that only the rather well off would be taking boat trips to and from Norway back then, so that is probably why the catering was so lavish. As to two restaurant cars, my memory tells me, dangerous at my age I know, that the RSP was very much a GN preference, other areas being happy with the usual Dia 27a SO. The RSPs do seem to have been branded as RCs, but Jonathan may be able to tell us more. 2
rowanj
The Norseman and, indeed, all the Norwegian Boat trains, were interesting to us on Tyneside too, Gilbert, They were as likely as any to bring a "cop", and indeed, it was only time I saw your namesake, 60113, at Newcastle. I run one occasionally through Little Benton, though the more usual route was via Wallsend with reversal at Percy Main, Engineering work is the normal excuse.... V1/3 were the regular motive power, with Class 24 and 40's on the last of the trains.

I didn’t spot that one was an RSP as I couldn’t see through the windows in the middle of the carriage I thought there was a kitchen there. But it’s obvious now you say it! I run my Norseman with an all Thompson catering core as per the 1956 MO formation. This also has a RSO/ RF included. It was an interesting train. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted August 14, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 14, 2022 Views from above again, the subject being KX A3 Tracery, and the 2.10 Leeds-KX. Some very ragged photoshopping on this next one, beyond my capablities I'm afraid. I have at last firmly decided that something must be done about that expanse of nothing in the background, which detracts from an otherwise rather nice view.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted August 15, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 15, 2022 Scotch Goods rolls on along the slow, passing the B12, which is waiting to reverse its stock down to the carriage sidings. The 1010 Edinburgh-KX has another local A2/3, which after a three minute stop here, will carry on to London. 60003 has to wait. I did all those lattices properly for once. It took rather a long time. 33
