RMweb Premium thegreenhowards Posted December 30, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 30, 2020 60103 for me. A cliche and also a name that has had people confusing the train with the locomotive ever since. 2
Woodcock29
Pretty Polly because it sounds more like a parrot than a locomotive or indeed a racehorse!
RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted December 30, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 30, 2020 Umm, avoiding names that may give offence, maybe Hermit isn't the best choice for an express locomotive!
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 30, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 30, 2020 It seems there is no communication between our men at either end of the station. If there was, we might not have got yet another shot of 60504. Anyway, it has gone off to London now, so there'll be no more pictures of it for a while. There is another Thompson creation on the way though, Dante, which had just taken over a Newcastle- KX parcels.
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted December 30, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 30, 2020 I too have decided on Hermit for this poll. Rob.

RMweb Premium great northern Posted December 31, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 31, 2020 Quite a lot of suggestions for dubious A3 names, though some of them did not have the same connotations at the time as they have now. The easy winner though was poor Polly, 5 votes, over a third of those cast. Continuing with the Pacifics, the best name on a Peppercorn A1 today. RMweb Gold Bazza Posted December 31, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 31, 2020 I was always impressed with 60153, Flamboyant. Was on the cover of the Ian Allan combined volumes.
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted December 31, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 31, 2020 Redgauntlet. A suitably dashing name, even though I offer no support for Jacobite rebellions!
davidw
I agree Red Gauntlet comes to mind. But also Balmoral and the ones named after old companies. Great Easter, Great Central and so on . Loads of great namers amongst this class. Edited December 31, 2020 by davidw

RMweb Premium thegreenhowards Posted December 31, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 31, 2020 My very first model railway locos were Wrenn A4s, Sir Nigel and Peregrine. I have always loved these names.

RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted December 31, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 31, 2020 Now this is a problem, is it going to be Kestrel or is it Great Eastern. Half a vote for each of them.
RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted December 31, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 31, 2020 The only A1 today is as Red Leader indicates, but is that actually a Peppercorn? However, for the A1s of yesteryear I announce in a pompous arse way.......Auld Reeki. Can't wait for the A2s and I suspect you might guess what my choices (there are 4 variants) for that are going to be for two of them. Yo.

Very much regarded as the 50th Peppercorn A1 - after a 50 year gap in production! It's effectively the sixth one fitted with roller bearings, as per 60153-7. It has an electrical system - so did the originals. It has modern signalling / communication systems - but the originals (eventually) had AWS. It has air brakes ... well, so do many of the modern steam mainline fleet. About the only major departure from design is the all-welded steel boiler - and even that is dimensionally the same as the originals. The P2, however ... (but no two of them were truly identical anyway) 2
