The parapet on Spital Bridge was quite high on both sides from the road, and extended all the way down to the junction on the East (Up) side, and so the only spot for a photo without a ladder was at the end of the parapets where the fence started on the West (Down) side of the line. This was just beyond the Midland lines/sidings. I can imagine having difficulties getting into that position without demolition - and the dust from that would be unthinkable! I always thought that the weight sank (sagged?) down as you got older, and that you got shorter. When I go to pick up something off the floor, though, it seams further away than ever. Many thanks again, Gilbert, for all your work and acrobatics to give us such magnificent prompts to reminisce. Lloyd Many thanks Lloyd. I' ve never succeeded in working out exactly where photographers were standing though it was clear that they all seemed to be in the same place. Though I've visited a couple of times since starting the project, I've never ventured onto Spital Bridge myself. Now I know what can't be done, so I can stop worrying about it! As to access, I've just measured the space between baseboard edge and wall, which is eleven and a half inches. I shall now take the view that, though it is a tight fit, I'm doing quite well if I can get in there at all. It is also a powerful disincentive to putting on any more excess weight, which must be a good thing.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted August 28, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 28, 2019 One of our resourceful cameramen must have brought a ladder with him. How else could he have got this shot from the "wrong" side of Spital Bridge? Our other man had remained in his normal position though, and so he could get this more acceptable view.
jwealleans
Gilbert, have I lost my orientation or was there a double-sided buffer stop more or less where the 58' GN carriage is standing?

There was Jonathan, and it is on the "to do" list. Here it is. Peter and I have looked at it several times, and always decided to defer it until later. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted August 29, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 29, 2019 Another Leicester bound local runs under Crescent Bridge, D16 hauled this time. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted August 29, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 29, 2019 Another lovely B17 tonight. Kimbolton Castle is waiting to depart with the 9.42 to Norwich. First though, HA Ivatt takes precedence and comes through with the West Riding.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted August 30, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 30, 2019 I am taking a break from golf, as it is doing my head in. Six shots from twenty yards from the green yesterday was the last straw. This means that more time may be spent on things that have been neglected for ages, but time will tell whether that happens. More shots of Kimbolton Castle today. This angle coming out of Platform 6 and under the bridge has plenty of potential. Off to Norwich she goes. No bookcases intermingled with the bridge supports to have to photoshop any more. 31

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted August 30, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 30, 2019 Deltic rumbles in on its normal morning turn. and after it has departed, fish empties for Hull appear, KX having found something for one of its unwanted Standard 5s to do. I've never seen a photo of any of them employed on passenger duties.

Sorry for O/T but I saw my first Flirts in the flesh at Cambridge yesterday. I thought they had a real presence — looking much more purposeful and “solid” than they do in photos. Very impressive, from the outside, at least. Back to PN: I’m not sure I agree that B17s are “beautiful”, but I think they’re hugely attractive machines. Poised and powerful-looking. A pumped-up muscleman compared to the more human D16s. But whatever the description, they’re lovely to see. PN just keeps getting better. Pilgrim in France
I believe a Standard class 5 was trialled on the Grimsby/Cleethorpes to Kings Cross express. Certainly I must have had evidence of this as it enabled me to justify buying one for the layout I had based on Boston.
RMweb Premium great northern Posted August 31, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 31, 2019 Please, vot is a flirt? Clearly it isn't what I've always understood one to be. As to B17s, I admit to enormous bias where they are concerned, but as Paul says "hugely atrractive" is a very good description. D16s are beautiful though.

I wonder what Immingham and Boston enginemen had to say about it? I've never seen anything other than Immingham locos on the Grimsby/Cleethorpes expresses, and they were the most prestigious duties either shed had. Was Top Shed hoping to get rid of the standards to Immingham? If so, it didn't work.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted August 31, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 31, 2019 I've had a nice lie in this morning, and can now contemplate a railway related day. I just have to make sure I get some exercise though. I'm still concentrating on lighting at the North end, so far without much success, as lighting one problem area just causes shadows to appear in another. This shot is much easier now though. But I don't find it particularly inspiring. It's this incoming view that I want to be able to improve, but it really is problematical. This is the morning Parly from Doncaster, by the way. One unforeseen lighting difficulty is immediately apparent. Otherwise, this isn't bad. It is when the train gets closer that things get very difficult, as three lattice posts get superimposed one on top of the other, and I'm finding that impossible to deal with, as you can see below. It were a low flying seagull that knocked the vac pipe sideways. 25
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted August 31, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 31, 2019 Two more shots of the incoming B1 tonight, after which we move on to something else. This one was slightly easier thanks to improved lighting, but I've dicovered that the batteries in these things don't last very long at all, so that's another consideration I will have to factor in. Next up is another look through that convenient archway.

As I recall that is what they did with the Black 5 that arrived in the mid 50s too. As a B1 equivalent, it would also be logical to use them on the summer Saturday Skegness trains, but I haven't seen any evidence of that. I suppose its the same old story. Something different, not what they were used to, and thus regarded with suspicion and dislike.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted September 1, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 1, 2019 I got a note through the door yesterday to say I couldn't have a parcel until I paid customs duty on it, so this morning I went and coughed up, and got my eagerly awaited treat from Australia. This is the J6 that Tony has very generously built for me, and it is lovely. It didn't survive its long journey, and no doubt some rough handling totally intact, but fortunately the damage is slight, and can easily be remedied. Here she is. The damage is to the cab backhead, and the crew. My attempt to get the driver back where he should be wasn't entirely successful, as tacky wax wasn't tacky enough once again. Note tablet catcher for use on the M&GN, and the lovely subtle weathering. Here's the other side. She runs very smoothly, and much more quietly than my other two. I am very fortunate indeed. 29 2
