RMweb Premium great northern Posted December 20, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 20, 2018 Hi Gilbert Thanks to Mr Goggle here is evidence that the bus on the bridge doesn't need to be leaning over. Bridge under bus.jpg That opens another can of worms. No discernable camber, but what about that 'ump? Mine doesn't have one of those either, and I don't like to think of Peter's reaction if I asked him to put one in.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 20, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 20, 2018 Golf stuff calls, so a quick look at an Ivatt leaving with the 1105 Yarmouth. and an Immingham B1 on the Up Cleethorpes. The duster got mislaid again on that one.

RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted December 20, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 20, 2018 But the passengers are in the last stages of starvation Clive. If it stays there much longer I'll have to model some skeletons. Ah!!! But without the Eastern Counties bus on the bridge some of us might think it is someone else's layout.
Martin S-C
You leave that bus alone. Buses need bridges to sit on in model railway land. It is the unwritten rule that we should all abide by. A bridge without a bus is like a station without a train. It NEEDS to be so, the feng-shui demands it. As regards the Goggle photo, the bus is level because its in the middle of the road. The cars to the right are clearly obeying gravity+camber effects. I mentioned the 'ump a page or two back but there's no need to give your bridge the 'ump over it. Edited December 20, 2018 by Martin S-C
chaz
OH Golly! If I had known how long this camber-chat would rumble on I would have kept my big mouth shut. Please stop now, I promise to be good in future.......
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 20, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 20, 2018 Today we got soaked by an unforecast "heavy shower" which decided to come at us horizontally when heading into the wind. We did not like it, but drank some wine later to erase the memory. Which obviously didn't work. We'll all be OK though if we remember not to mention the camber. No sooner has one Ivatt departed for Yarmouth than another arrives. The train has come from Yarmouth, but the loco only from South Lynn. If we pan out somewhat, we get to see the 1130 to Edinburgh standing at Platform 6.

Gravy Train
Hi Gilbert Thanks to Mr Goggle here is evidence that the bus on the bridge doesn't need to be leaning over. Bridge under bus.jpg Hi Clive,Never noticed that before now, amazing how all the evidence come after the build and impossible to get beforehand. Yes definitely a hump in the Bridge, however I would have to put the girder ironwork in the ‘oven’ to get the bend and would be difficult to approximate how much bend in 4mm would be required and would have to employ a surveyor to work out the Cant from one end to the other which is what was done done for Victoria Viaduct on Carlisle. The trouble with this, is that the ironwork itself is curved. In my opinion, not worth the many many hours required to get to this point. Thanks for the post Clive, I hope my comments don’t come over as offensive in any way, Cheers Peter Edited December 21, 2018 by Gravy Train

Thanks for the post Clive, I hope my comments don’t come over as offensive in any way, Cheers Peter They don't, Peter. Our thoughts were always on getting the bridge to look as good as possible from rail level, weren't they? And we used those Roco parts because otherwise the work and cost involved would have been more than I could have afforded. Let's face it, most things you've done for me have had to be substantially compromised to fit the site, and you've done a wonderful job to get them looking as much like the real thing as possible. The bridge is not "right" in scale terms, but it captures the feel of the real thing very well, and as we keep saying, it couldn't be anywhere else, could it? I love it. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 21, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 21, 2018 I reluctantly volunteered to stand in for someone in a charity golf do this morning. When I got up the rain was pouring down, and my back was telling me what on old fool I'd been, again. All dressed and ready to go when the phone rang, and my mate very apologetically told me that two of the team had cried off, gastric flu and shoulder injury apparently. "Oh dear, does that mean it's off?" said I. And it is. So here I sit, watching the rain come down. Shortly I may do something. Featured working this morning is a J6 on a trip goods from East, seen coming under the lovely bridge. I've left this one with a natural background, which isn't too bad. Further along the Down slow, where it passes the A2/2, the full photoshopping procedure is needed. I am feeling insufferably smug, as I look out of the window and imagine all those people in full wet weather gear and with rain trickling down the back of thier necks. I think I'll have a nice cup of tea.
Martin S-C
Its on hearing stories like this that I'm tempted to build a little coastal German NG layout, maybe something inspired by Rugen Island, and call it "Schadenfreude am See".
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 21, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 21, 2018 Having the whole fiddle yard operational again has meant I've been able to make progess today. I now have a long goods sitting in the road which was occupied by eight 'orrible Hornby Gresleys. They can skulk in the shadows where they belong. The goods looks impressive, but is almost impossible to photograph in its entirety, so you'll have to take my word for it for the time being. Other ideas are working well too, but I still have this feeling that I am missing something relatively simple which would transform operation completely. Tonight's photos focus again on Seagull and the Flying Scotsman. A very familiar view both in contemporary photos and on here. For the next one though, instead of custom cropping as usual, I hit the widescreen option. and I rather like it.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 22, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 22, 2018 Looks like a nice day. Golf, yes, anywhere near a shop,no. It is sheer madness out there. Anyway, I just put the camera down to assess whether I could get a decent shot from that position, and it went off in my hand. Here is the involuntary result. Encouraged, I added trains. Mons Meg departing with the 1130 Edinburgh meets the W1 running through on its regular Up working. I wish there was a way to extend the bridge through the outside wall.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 23, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 23, 2018 One last broadside look at the impressive bulk of 60700. The bus on the bridge has departed at last, but now there is one coming the other way. The 8.00 Up Newcastle has been taken over by Grantham A3 Flying Fox, and now approaches the station. This is taken from the bottom of the platform ramp, so our photographer was perfectly safe for once. The angle does though create substantial photoshopping problems. I have an idea though as to how to lighten the darkness under Spital bridge.

P Well, yes. It's a much used device by American modellers. Example - hiding one under some trees where a road "disappears" into the backscene prevents the dark-tunnel effect. RMweb Premium great northern Posted December 23, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 23, 2018 It is all going extremely well.
