And so I ascended, full of resolve, and got out the things I would need, only to find that I have no Decalfix left, so I can't get on with what I wanted to do. This means I shall have to run trains and take photos, but not till after lunch.

Running of trains was no problem, but taking photos in near darkness certainly was. A very dreary day indeed.

 

I've featured coaching stock on its own fairly often, and some fitted freights occasionally, but never, I think, cast the spotlight on the humble mineral wagon, so I shall redress the balance somewhat.

I am baffled by the compensating beams between the pairs of springs on the Dub-Dee's tender. Was this arrangement used on any other eight-wheeled tender I wonder? It wasn't used on the LNER eight wheeled tenders. And might it have anything to do with the propensity for these tenders to land in the dirt when being propelled? 

 

I used to like seeing the Dub-Dees, so often filthy and always musical, with a variety of clanks and bongs.

The WD looms out from under the bridge, characterful as always.

 

There really is something about them. As you may have noticed, I can rarely resist pointing the camera at  them several times when they appear. I do remember that they had a certain fascination even to a young oik too.

 

Now we come to photos taken yesterday in near darkness. Yet another Grantham A3, this time Victor Wild, runs under the bridge, but in preparation for nothing more challenging than the 8.10 stopper to Grantham.

 

One of the few photos that has had nothing more done to it than a bit of cropping. This service took the stock that had arrived as the 5.00 from KX on to Grantham. It then had a late evening run to Nottingham, and will reappear the following morning as the core of the Nottingham-KX Mark Lane Flyer.

I've just been sitting and looking out of my lounge window, and thinking how fortunate I am to see a glorious sight in my garden, so I decided to share it.

Shunting movements carry on beween the passing trains, and the C12 has been able to bring up the stock for the 8.30 to Melton Constable, which it is now propelling into the bay.

 

This leaves the Down main free for a Doncaster 9F to come through with a Hitchin to Colwick Class D.

The C12 has moved forward slightly, but will get no further until the 9F gets out of the way and frees up the Down main.

 

If it wants to return to the Up side, it will be waiting a while longer, as a very smart KX V2 now runs in with the 5.15 Hull, and meets the 9F, which is moving very slowly as the distant is on.

"Your purchase of decalfix will be delivered before 8.00pm today"......by Hermes. Or not, as the case may be, and was. Perhaps it might arrive tomorrow.

 

That V2 is very nice and shiny, so we will keep following its progress.

 

I am still indecisive as to the identity of the latest A4, though I think I have narrowed it down to one of three.

A fine and bright day. A free day too, no golf club stuff to do, or to play. Still no decalfix though, and no message as to why it hasn't been delivered, or when it will be. It will just have to be more running of trains and photography. Speaking of which, here are the latest happenings. Victor Wild is heading for home.

Decalfix finally arrived, though too late to do anything with it today. I also remembered two things which needed to be done, but had been forgotten for days, and watched a very moving programme on BBC4 which has just finished. My grandfather was at Passchendaele, and only once talked to me about it, then told me never to mention it again, but I've never forgotten what he told me. What a fortunate generation we are who were born after the second war. Enough of that, forward to 1958, and the second Down Cleethorpes, with its bulled up B1.

 

It will just have passed an 02 on the Down slow, which heads a mixed goods from Letchworth.

Golf today, and a nice morning so far. A couple of shots in black and white before that though.

 

Plenty going on here. The D16 is starting away as the 02 slows for the inevitable stop at signals. The C12 is waiting its opportunity to get out of the way so that the train loco can back on, and both Midland sidings are full.

I'm afraid not, as I delete most photos as soon as I post them to save space. Because of the light conditions that one didn't look very good in colour, so that's why it appeared as it did. I'll try to remember to do a colour one for you next time I try a shot like that.

The 1145am from Dundee appears, headed by another very famous A4. We get shots from the Spital Bridge area first, with a bright and low setting sun to contend with.

There sems to be a scratch on the negative of this one.

While this one is less into sun, but still provides plenty of shadow problems. Both have some impact though.

I now have no excuse for failing to get on with things. Apart from sheer idleness, of course.

Worth contacting them. I wonder what they might pay for articles by an expert on the subject. I can't get on with anything yet, by the way, as there isn't enough light to see what I'm doing.   And it's time for elevenses.

Tonight seems to be all about wagons. There's nothing else in this first view.

except for a bit of incipient desert, which has appeared during the summer.

 

Then we have an Up fish from New Clee, but at least there is a loco or three in the distance.

 

I tempted fate this morning, and it bit back, as thick cloud descended and remained all day, so still nothing has been done.
