RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 17, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 17, 2017 Well now folks, we have had a milestone, and a pretty big one. Last evening the 1,000,000th view of this topic took place. I find it very hard to comprehend that my model railway has attracted that amount of interest, but my heartfelt thanks to those who have made it happen, and my congratulations too on the staying power of those who have been with it since the very early days. I have had so much help and encouragement, so many helpful suggestions, so much support when things didn't go as planned, and I can only once again say thank you to you all. Particular thanks to Andy Y, both for providing the means to show the layout to so many people all over the world, and for the hours he has given up to do things to help me, and of course to Norman Saunders whose lovely trackwork is literally the basis of the whole thing. And of course without the wonderful work of Peter Leyland, it could not have happened at all. Others who have made huge contributions are no longer with us, and I will mention yet again my great friend Dave Shakespeare, who kick started the whole thing, and the infinitely knowledgeable Andy Rush. There is quite a way to go yet so far as improvements and additions to the layout are concerned, so we shall carry on as before, with the occasional new item to spice things up a bit. What could be better than more B17 pictures to celebrate, so we shall follow 61635 on its way out of the station. I tried a slightly different new angle with the next one. though I think the next effort is a bit better. and to cater for those with other interests than B17s, here is a black and white blue meanie, on its usual morning trip to Doncaster. And now I shall do my exercises in the hope of warming up a bit. Still no heating until at least tomorrow.

Liam
Well Gilbert, what a milestone! I feel honoured to be part of the thread even though I'm a relative newcomer. But do you know who the lucky reader was?
RMweb Premium 31A Posted April 17, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 17, 2017 Congratulations Gilbert, well done on reaching your milestone! I hope this doesn't mean you'll be posting fewer pictures in future ...
richard.h
Congratulations Gilbert, your dedication in providing us with quality pictures of the daily comings and goings at Peterborough North is something to appreciate. Long may it continue.
RMweb Premium Grafarman Posted April 17, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 17, 2017 Well done GB; your openness to suggestions, narratives, stories, discussions and comments have kept PN as one of the absolute 'must-read' threads on the forum. I model the opposite side of the country in a different era and at half the scale and yet still find much to hold my interest and provide inspiration; surely testament to your dedication and good-humour in providing regular postings and accomodating requests and observations from all-comers. Long may the thread continue... David
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted April 17, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 17, 2017 Hi, Gilbert. Many congratulations on reaching a million views. That is a testament to just how good your interpretation of Peterborough North in 4mm scale really is. You have reproduced a big mainline station on the ECML in 1958 so beautifully, and any compromises on space grounds are very well overcome and implemented. I take my hat off to you, and I'm sure you will be looking forward to the next million views, and I hope to be a small part of them. With warmest regards, Rob. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 17, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 17, 2017 Congratulations Gilbert, well done on reaching your milestone! I hope this doesn't mean you'll be posting fewer pictures in future ... So long as people want to see them, I'll keep posting them. I enjoy taking the photos, and I suspect I wouldn't run the layout as often as I do if I didn't have that motivation. It is just getting a bit harder to find different angles and views to keep things fresh. Two more Deltic shots tonight, true blue this time. I really will do something about the lack of gubbins on the front end, if I can ever find the bag which contains them.
RMweb Premium uax6 Posted April 18, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 18, 2017 I think the worst part is that hole on the bogie stretcher... Eh up the lampman's been and nicked the lamp off that gallows signal.... I love that concrete signal post, something you just don't see modelled. rockershovel
Model railways are an illusion, and this one creates and sustains that illusion. That's really all there is to be said; it works as it is intended to work, which I suppose, is the definition of a successful railway of any sort
allan downes
A million hits Gilbert and deservedly so and the kind of thing that happens when you exchange collecting wives for collecting locos ! Congratulations on what also must be a first for the forum - 1,000,000 hits and still counting. Best wishes for the future. Allan. RMweb Premium great northern Posted April 18, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 18, 2017 Well Gilbert, what a milestone! I feel honoured to be part of the thread even though I'm a relative newcomer. But do you know who the lucky reader was? No, I can't work that one out. Perhaps Andy Y could. He'll be up to his eyes though, having just got back from York.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 18, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 18, 2017 We have one more shot of Deltic, rumbling away contentedly while waiting for the off. More successful than some of my attempts from this angle. Deltic having left, fish empties for Hull behind a Doncaster 9F soon followed, no doubt producing an interesting olfactory experience under the roof. Diesel fumes and fish effluvia combined, lovely. Have you noticed that I must have swallowed a dictionary this morning? Anything to take my mind off the cold. Should get fixed today though.
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted April 18, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 18, 2017 Part of the magic of PN for me, and I may not be alone, is that Gilbert does all the careful posing of trains within the confines of a working timetable. So instead of just a pretty train, we know it's origin, destination, time etc. It thus has a purpose, a reason to be at PN at this particular juncture, and is, in virtual terms, real. The composition of the train has been carefully prepared from real documents, meticulously researched. Not every fine layout manages that. A million is a huge number. And so well-earned. Res ipsa loquitur, or something like that.
RMweb Gold trw1089 Posted April 18, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 18, 2017 Well done on the million views Gilbert. This is my first port of call on RMWeb every time I visit, and I love how you have brought together all the disparate bits into a cohesive whole (you're not the only one who swallowed a dictionary today it seems). You have the right train in the right location with the right locomotive and what's even better is you take pictures of them and put them on here for us to enjoy. Long may it continue! Congratulations Tony
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 18, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 18, 2017 I decided to feature the humble fish van, or several of them. Don't know why really, but here they are. and then I thought it was about time for another under the roof shot. it is always a bit of a lottery as to how sharp these turn out to be. Never mind, I now have heat, hot water too.

RMweb Premium great northern Posted April 19, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 19, 2017 First away golf tournament of the season today, and a nice bright morning for it. Still part cloudy at PN though, as the 9F continues northwards. In the opposite direction comes the early morning Doncaster parliamentary, the usual careworn New England B1 at the head. So, how many of you would like to see more images which just show the train, rather than the locomotive?

Liam
If you have some 'windcutters' then you could try and recreate a prototype picture I saw of some on a winters evening in Normanton, Yorkshire with the setting sun above it - you could just hear the shoves and jostles of them being shunted! I'll try and find that photo.
RMweb Gold trw1089 Posted April 19, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 19, 2017 I like both pics of trains and pics of locos. I still remember (on my fleeting visit) ogling at your storage sidings full of beautiful coaches and wishing I could spend half the day just looking at each one in turn, so pics of the train would certainly be fine by me!* CheersTony *As long as there was a B17 occasionally and an N5 now and then to keep NHN happy!
