I actually don't think the current layout is too bad - it's certainly one I find quite hard to get right on sims, and that's part of what an F1 circuit should be.

I recall standing in the mud looking over the fence and seeing the cars for a few seconds. Many European circuits provide stepped banking, often made of concrete, for those that can only afford the entry ticket. This enables a better view and you can also sit down in a measure of comfort. I think hills give a circuit some character but Silverstone is almost completely flat. I made this comment before running a half marathon around it a few years ago & was told "it is more undulating that I think". It wasn't. There were a couple of very gentle inclines, but nothing more than that. Compare this to Brands Hatch, which is has some very steep drops & climbs. The advantage Silverstone has is size. After seeing Brands & Donington, I thought I knew what to expect, but was surprised by how enormous Silverstone is. The others managed to cope with a Grand Prix in the 80s & 90s but F1 has outgrown them. I know there are street circuits which have smaller facilities, but the money they generate makes up for this. RMweb Premium Reorte Posted January 24 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 24 Definitely right about the hills, they can help make some of the most interesting corners in the world - think Paddock at Brands, or Eau Rouge / Radillon at Spa, the Corkscrew and Laguna Seca, or that crazy bit of Portimao. They certainly help in viewing too. I suppose the British circuit history is both blessed and cursed by several being old airfields. That'll naturally give a pretty flat circuit, but they were available and handy at the time and one of the reasons we've got rather more circuits than you'd probably expect in a country the size of the UK. I mentioned sims, it's interesting that arguably the first real sim, Revs, in 1985 originally only came with Silverstone but modelled what inclines do exist. They became more apparent when extra tracks were released later, including Brands Hatch. It's very impressive for its time, as far as I know the first attempt to accurately model a circuit for a game.

Also bloody good fun to drive and ride!! First time was in my old Escort Mk iii when I <ahem> accidentally turned right whilst driving out of the midfield spectating area after a BTCC event. After 1 cautious lap with me and my mates in the car, I managed to find the correct exit at Redgate. 😇 I then had more official laps at a couple of the old Yamaha Owners Festivals, this time nailing the bike round the track. Awesome fun overtaking other bikes down Craner Curves!

Awesome fun overtaking other bikes down Craner Curves! Never been entirely sure just which are the Craner Curves. The long, gentle right-hander after Redgate, the left after that, both? The very slight kink right before the Old Hairpin? Could be all since it's "curves" plural.

That was "the lap" when he dropped from 4th to 5th at the start then made his way to first before the last corner. Surely the best lap in F1 history? So it is quite amazing to have a photo of him on his own! 1
didcot
If I remember correctly he had just passed both Williams. You could see from the brake disc glow that he was on the brakes much much later. Really didn't appreciate it until we saw in on the TV when we got home. Murray called it the best opening lap he had ever seen. So glad to have seen it happen as Senna was dead within 13 months. Well technically it's the bits between Hollywood and the Old Hairpin. 😊 The long gentle right hander after Redgate is Hollywood. That then merges into the sharper right at the entrance to Craner, then left and then jiggle right again before Old Hairpin.

didcot
Pretty sure. It's quite a tight shot. Caught both Prost and Senna after the overtake. The concertina effect makes them look closer together. And then Damon Hill.

He tweeted: “The VISA Cash App RB overtakes the Mastercard Mobil 1 McLaren driven by Oscar Peroni Piastri. “Meanwhile it’s Max Heineken Verstappen taking the win at the Aramco-Coca Cola London Grand Prix, his 12th win of the season on street circuits. “Alex AWS Albon crashes at the Amazon Prime Parabolica in his Bet365 Casio-Powertrains Williams during the Louis Vuitton Italian GP. This triggers the Monster Energy red flag and the second Deliveroo safety car of the race.” If that happens I’ll have more free weekend time, having given up watching F1.
