RMweb Premium Mol_PMB Posted December 24, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 24, 2023 Really looking forward to this, I commute regularly into Platform 5 at Oxford Road as per the photo above. Hoping that indicates it will be blue? I bought a load of bits to build one of these in O gauge, but it's still in the Round Tuit pile.
Halvarras
Oh...........not stopping for Christmas then Darius?! OK, you keep building 'em and we'll keep looking on in astonishment 🙂!  Your photo of the contents seems very light on underframe components.......?  The ol' scribing tool is going to have its work cut out on this one - all those doors! Good luck!!
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted December 25, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 25, 2023 It might be time for a new blade in the scriber.  I’ve had it 20 years and never changed the blade yet - Trigger’s broom it isn’t.  The fun part will be sticking on the etched door hinges…  Cheers  Darius
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 3 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 3 Made a start on the Driving Motor Coach.  Doors and bodyside panels scribed in.    Lowered roof section cut away.  I fixed a flat plasticard roof in place and used it as a base for the white metal transition piece and a narrowed piece of the cut-away roof.  The parts were filed and sanded flush with the main roof.    The MTK white metal cab and coach ends were taped in place and glued with plasticard joint reinforcing strips fitted.    Filler was then applied to the lower roof transition and edges and left to cure.    Cheers  Darius
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 3 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 3 I replaced the rather crude MTK louvred panel with one made from plasticard.    Cheers  Darius 9
RMweb Premium Mol_PMB Posted January 3 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 3 This is going to look great! These units looked very anachronistic especially once they were painted blue and fitted with ac-type pantographs. They didn't actually run on ac, but the OLE was rebuilt to ac standards in preparation for the switch-over, and I think the old dc pans had a different contact pressure that didn't work well with it. Â Link to Flickr pic from Gordon Edgar: The fleet had accumulated quite a lot of variations over the years. Â These days of course, it's part of the Metrolink network and the OLE wires have another different voltage. The old masts are still doing their duty and are approaching their 100th birthday - they were built to last! Mol 17
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 3 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 3 Louvre panels fitted.  Mis-moulded MTK cab front steps removed and new plasticard steps added.    Cheers  Darius 14
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 4 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 4 Roof strips, vents and step boards fitted.     MTK provided white metal shell ventilators, which are the wrong type.  Fortunately I had some Peco/Parkside vents of the correct type, which I used.  Cheers  Darius 14
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 4 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 4 Hinges, handles etc. fitted to one side.  More details to cab and rear end.  Trial fitting of pantograph.     Cheers  Darius 13

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 5 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 5 Chassis painted.       Some more undergibbon kit needs to be fitted but not much was supplied with the kit.  Photos indicate something mounted centrally under the chassis but it is hard to make out what it looks like.  Cheers  Darius 11
RMweb Premium Mol_PMB Posted January 5 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 5 I've just had a look through my various technical books on EMUs, DC electrics and LMS coaching stock, all of which include these units. None of the diagrams have any underframe detail and the photos aren't very helpful. 'Altrincham to Manchester before Metrolink' has plenty of photos of the class but not from useful angles show the underframe. You've got the tank by the rear bogie which is the most obvious thing. There's some sort of electrical control gear with criss-cross like features under the middle, but all the photos are a bit vague. Note the step under the guard's door. Â Â Â Â Sorry, I'd hoped to be more helpful than that when I started this post! Mol 10
47164
Excellent work as usual, especially on an unusual emu, so inspiring, you continue to prove to MTK critics that they can be built into presentable models. what is your glue of choice ?
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 5 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 5  I use the superglue for the metal parts and MEK for the plasticard.  Cheers  Darius

dave75
Great work, I've been watching both DC emus with interest as I have a mousa models 506 in the cupboard,. Â Would it be possible for you to give us a detailed overview of the chassis construction as I would like to learn that technique.
